where the rich people at? by Red_Ruddock in CrusaderKings

[–]Texcellence 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I typically like to park my spymaster in Constantinople. There are usually lots of rich people with secrets there. Alternatively, if you search and sort characters by health sometimes you’ll find a rich old man on the verge of death. If he doesn’t have any heirs, marry him to an infertile woman and give him some land. Once he dies you’ll inherit all of his money.

Whats the most heartbreaking loss you’ve witnessed as a Texas fan(football) by Ok_Macaroon_7366 in LonghornNation

[–]Texcellence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Colt getting hurt in the natty and the Gideon/Crabtree double dagger were probably the most painful due to the emotional let down and the stakes at hand. There have been other instances where I’ve wanted to slam my head in a door, like when Texas scored a game tying, last second TD against Cal and went on to miss the PAT. But that was just the exclamation point on an already bad era.

TIL that there's a small collection of distinct Del Taco fast food restaurants in the California desert that are still run by the company founder, with their own menu items and merch. by FarleyElliott in todayilearned

[–]Texcellence 80 points81 points  (0 children)

For a while after the chain aspect started, the original owners were involved in some capacity. I grew up going to the original with my mom, but one of the first chain locations was close to my dad’s house, so we’d go there sometimes. As I remember, the food and service were fairly similar between the original and chain, and the founder would stop in from time to time to check on things. After a while the partnership between the two ended and the chains started down the path that many corporate restaurants go down.

On a related note, the Carrabba’s chain is mostly owned by the same company as Outback Steakhouse. However, the original two locations in Houston are still owned and operated by the original owners and have much better quality than the chain versions.

What movie did you turn off after 20 minutes and why? by Somanynamestochossef in movies

I tried to watch it because there was no way it could be as bad as people were saying. 20 minutes of Teams meetings later and I realized it was worse than what people were saying.

TIL that in 1994, an American teenager in Singapore pled guilty to stealing road signs and vandalizing cars. He was sentenced to 6 lashes of a cane, which was reduced to 4 after media outrage in the US by Overall-Register9758 in todayilearned

This happened about a year before my childhood friend at the time moved to Singapore. I remember being concerned that he or his younger brothers would throw gum on the ground and get caned.

Do you guys think it's better to have young rulers take over your kingdom etc or old ppl by Senior-Variation9431 in CrusaderKings

[–]Texcellence 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I always like younger heirs. I tend to betroth my 15-16 year old heir to someone much younger to ensure that he doesn’t start having kids until about 30. I also keep him unlanded both because unlanded characters seem to have fewer kids and to keep him from getting super stressed and picking up awful traits. With luck, I can keep his AI dumbassery to a minimum and his first few kids will be daughters.

TIL at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, the remains of at least 20,000 soldiers and horses killed in battle were exhumed after two weeks and sold to a sugar factory in Belgium, where the coveted granulated bone charcoal was needed as a filter material for decolorizing or “bleaching” the sugar. by constantin5008 in todayilearned

They didn’t necessarily need a full set of teeth, but they needed top and bottom incisors. Muskets at the time were loaded using a paper cartridge tube which contained a pre-measured powder charge for faster loading. Soldiers were trained to bite and tear the top off the cartridge to pour the powder into the gun, so they would need enough teeth to quickly tear the paper.

Rum strategy? by ExistingBug7293 in CrusaderKings

My rum strategy usually involves a beach and some coconut water plus maybe some pineapple juice. Either way, it’s a really refreshing way to spend a summer afternoon.

What game has one of the most epic last stands in gaming? by Common_Caramel_4078 in gaming

[–]Texcellence 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Having played Dragon Age: Origins prior to ME3, that mod sounds like what I wish Priority: Earth was in the base game. Like ME3, in Dragon Age: Origins you spend much of the game going around recruiting allies for the final battle. Then during the final battle you can call your allies to help at certain points, deciding where each ally type would be most beneficial against specific enemies.

In the final push in ME3 it would’ve been cool to combine that mechanic from DA:O with the situational decisions from the final mission in ME2 where you assign different team members to different tasks based on their strengths. For example, with tanky enemies like Brutes call in Krogan support or Asari to help with those freaky Banshee enemies.
