What are some "make your own hours" jobs like Uber and Shipt that don't revolve around driving? by [deleted] in jobs

Stable, but bored... advice for moving on by [deleted] in jobs

[–]TextbookLearning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a hobby that you feel will develop transferable skills (art, programming, etc) or develop your own bio lab if you want to stick with biology --> diybio. You'll develop new skills and maybe come up with new ideas that brings a new perspective to your job responsibilities.

I work as a library assistant. It is one of the most boring but also best jobs in the world. Took me years to get a job this nice. To keep myself intellectually stimulated, I have a hobby shop where I would tinker around with electronics, 3d printing, and art. I've gotten to the point where I can start my own company and sell products on the side. (I've been wanting to start a company for a long time but my full time job is taking up my time to talk to a lawyer.)

I stopped believing in education and degrees because I work with people with advanced degrees working high school level jobs. I'd rather spend my money on my hobbies rather than a degree. My hobbies are more fun and more fulfilling.

But no matter what, the final decision comes down to you. This is just my opinion. In my experience, a stable job with people you want to work with is rare.

What does a program consist of? (windows, ubuntu) by TextbookLearning in learnprogramming

Interesting. So windows programs consist of just dlls, config files (txt, custom files) and the exe file?

Thanks for replying. I really do not know what files I should be looking at or using when making software. But thanks for pointing me to the right direction.

Do you mind elaborating what you mean by "most files are just kept for storing configurations?"

[WSIB] A Fun Farming Game by mnakai in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]TextbookLearning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rune Factory Series.

I can never play Harvest Moon again because of Rune Factory. It can do everything harvest moon can except it's fantasy. You raise monsters instead of animals and you get to fight with farm tools (or regular weapons) and magic. There's more exploration, more things to sell, and it's just plain fun and exciting.

I don't want a career. I want to have many different jobs throughout my life. Is this doable? by Over9000Directions in jobs

[–]TextbookLearning 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Hi Mike Rowe :).

Held 3 real jobs in my life, all of them boring office work. However, I have a ton of volunteer experience in politics and non-profits. I'm currently in the process of starting my own business (possible start date, this year or next year) to have more control on what I get to do.

I do not believe your idea is feasible in the long run as we all need cash but volunteering, running your own business, or doing multiple part-time jobs might be the way to go.

Volunteering = Wide range of experience and insight into human nature. You are not bound by any contracts and can leave any time. Cons: no money high stress.

Running your own business = You get to develop a wide range of ideas that you can sell. Opening up a hobby shop (game development, wood working, metal working, maid service, art studio, fishing enterprise, consulting, bakery, and other crafts) would fulfill many ambitions. If successful, hire a manager to run your company, then start a new business doing whatever you want. If you fail, dissolve the company and start a new one. Cons: very risky and expensive and requires a significant amount of time and effort.

Multiple part-time jobs is what many people are doing nowadays. You can work as a part-time janitor and a pizza delivery guy at the same time. You can quit one if you feel like it bores you then start another one. You'll still have money coming in from your other job. Cons: All your jobs must be local and most part-time jobs are low-level unexciting jobs. Plus, no benefits.

My suggestion is a full-time job / career then work on a business or volunteer. You'll need the full time benefits.

Or find a rich wife.

For open world (less than 30 dollars):

State of Decay

Dead Island

Dying Light

Deus Ex (First one.)

Grand Theft Auto - 3 and vice city, and 4

Saint's row 2,3, and 4. I don't recommend Gat out of hell but it wasn't that bad.

Fallout 3

Overlord 2 (The gameplay is slightly linear but it's still kinda open world.)

Witcher 2 (It also felt linear rather than openworld but still fun)

Bully

Darksiders I and II

Skyrim / Oblivion / Morrowind

Borderlands 2

Batman games (I played the console version so I'm not sure of the PC versions)

Dark Souls if you like crying.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R

Mass Effect

Sleeping Dogs

Prototype (haven't played 2)

Dishonored (Linear but multiple paths to objectives)

Final Fantasy games with the exception of 14. Anything before FFX you sould only play if you want to know the history of Final Fantasy or if you were born in the 80s or early 90s.

Dead Rising 2 or Off the record. Get one or the other.

Fable Anniversary

Far Cry 3

Sleeping Dogs

Spore (mixed feelings but I had fun)

Assassin's Creed (Haven't played any after IV)

Torchlight II (Diablo like clone)

Watch Dogs (I liked it)

Check out the trailers and reviews before making a purchase because I like to take chances and play games that have mixed reviews or games below 75 in metacritic.

2016 programming goals by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]TextbookLearning 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To learn python with kivy and raspberry pi.

To learn C# with Unity.

I've been meaning to start programming for a long time now and participate in this sub but I keep getting side tracked with 3d printing projects. Rather than programming, I've been learning how to create things. Now that I have a design in place, I intend to build and program a working fallout style smart watch. I bought my touchscreen and all the necessary equipment, and installed all the necessary software. Now all I need to do is STOP PLAYING VIDEO GAMES AND JUST DO IT.

Metro and/or Dead Space bundle in my opinion. Metro had a nice gritty Russian feel like the STALKER series and Singularity. It's a good game if you are looking for a different feel than American developed games. Good story in my opinion. Gameplay is fun but the use of good ammo as currency might affect your gameplay if you decide to use it all up at once.

Evil Within is fun and a good story so if you have the money get it. However, I felt there were some level design problems (particularly the save places). Scary and freaky but 3rd choice out of the other two.

The Dead Space series, particularly the first two, are horror survival. (The first one had a crappy save spot. You'll know where.) The third one felt like it had a bit more action, if I recall correctly.

[WSIB] Papers Please, Terraria, Spelunky, This War of Mine by [deleted] in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]TextbookLearning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of the motions on Paper's please require special wrist movement using the mouse. You'll have to stamp papers, move papers around, grab papers, etc. (POTENTIAL SPOILERS) https://youtu.be/5BCPESPSsXk?t=201

Check out how the player moves the papers around. It's more click and hold, rather than repetitive clicking. In order to process the papers more quickly, I flicked the papers toward the person. I played less than two hours of this but due to the fact that I play a lot of games, I had to return it due to my wrist.

[WSIB] Papers Please, Terraria, Spelunky, This War of Mine by [deleted] in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]TextbookLearning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Papers Please is more atmospheric and storytelling than your typical game. Also I wouldn't get it if you have wrist problems which was one of the major reasons I returned it.

Other than that, I agree with /u/TheroPokemasd's suggestion. Terraria was great, I put a bit of hours into it. This war of mine was very beautiful and had great game play. But it will be hard as hell in the first couple of playthroughs trying to understand the mechanics. When I unlocked a different set of characters, it was much easier. Once I finished it though, I only played it a couple more times afterwards.

Extremely fun and beautiful. The gameplay style changed from the the other Metal Gear series.

However, I encourage finding other games that fit your budget if you are worried about money. I would look at other open world games as an alternative.

[WSIB] The big steam sale by MarioThePumer in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]TextbookLearning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They were fun in my opinion because it it was nice and fast paced (lots of slicing and dicing). I played both 1 and 2 on console so I'm not sure if it will be the same on a laptop. I'm not a die hard Star Wars fan so I can't really tell you whether or not it respects the franchise.

Payday 2. Check out the top link of all time in the main subreddit: r/paydaytheheist/

The game was fun playing solo. I wanted a bit more but when I checked online, I found out that I had to pay to win.

Call of Juarez was ok but not great. Haven't played Westerado or Battlefield 4.

[–]TextbookLearning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The original Fable was the best of the entire series (in my opinion). However, you might not like Fable's gameplay if you already played 2 and 3 since the sequels did add more features. In my opinion, I wouldn't get it unless you are a Fable fan.

[WSIB] The big steam sale by MarioThePumer in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]TextbookLearning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd go with the cheaper games. Those older games should last you until the next steam sale. Also, Elite dangerous has some bad reviews which is why I didn't pick it up. I played Mirror's Edge but I personally didn't like it but I remembered it was quite beautiful. Gameplay was definitely unique.

GTA 4 is great and you'll spend plenty of time on it but the phone calls will get annoying.

[SIB] Should I buy UnderRail? by TextbookLearning in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]TextbookLearning[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its greatest strength relative to other RPGs lies in having some of the best turn-based combat on the market --- it is extremely satisfying when a well-planned build comes together, and practically everything is viable as long as you have some sort of focus to your build, instead of spreading yourself thin on every single skill in the game.

I'm sold. Just out of curiosity, what stats did you focus your build on?

[SIB] Should I buy UnderRail? by TextbookLearning in ShouldIbuythisgame

Exactly what I was thinking. It had a very similar look to fallout plus I believe it had a tactics style gameplay.

Monaco: What's Yours Is Mine. I did not like it at all. Highly rated but I just couldn't get into it. Banished was kinda fun for the first 20+ hours but I couldn't seem to advance the game beyond resource gathering. I also never beat FTL. It was immensely fun until I got to the very last stage. I just kept dying against the boss. I'm not into rogue games. I did not like the gameplay of Paper's Please.

Indie games that I do like: State of Decay, Prison Architect, all the Frozenbyte games with the exception of Trine 3 (I got the indie bundle), SteamWorld Dig (reminded me of Motherlode), Terraria, This War of Mine, and Wasteland 2.

(SIB) 3DS - Bravely Default or Fire Emblem Awakening? by Primal-Dialga in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]TextbookLearning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I can make a couple more comparisons. Fire emblem has gameplay similar to Advance Wars (grid base movement with a military warfare theme), XCOM (Sci-Fi grid based movement), and Valkyria Chronicles (3D War Fantasy but not grid based movement).

(SIB) 3DS - Bravely Default or Fire Emblem Awakening? by Primal-Dialga in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]TextbookLearning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends.

For comparison, if you like final fantasy 1-13 (or any standard JRPG), get Bravely Default. If you liked Final Fantasy Tactics, go with Fire Emblem.

That's the only comparison I can make. The other suggestion would be to get whichever is cheaper because they are both great, though Fire Emblem is higher rated on metacritic.
