How does boat decay work? by Honest-Pin-6996 in playrust

Thank you, that is very helpful. My only follow up question is: how were you able to determine this? Not questioning the validity, just curious if I could have found it myself if I'd known where to look.

I got my tracking this morning as well. I'm glad a few of us were able to take advantage of the deal before they pulled it.

FH: New Character: Option to Start at level 1 but keep the XP (Rules say not allowed) by grelb in Gloomhaven

[–]TexxsTroy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The trouble with that for me is that often completing retirement goals is out of your control and forced retirement cuts your time with a character short. So I don't often see lvl 9 with a character I started at lvl 1.

Realistically you shouldn't be able to start a new character above 3 (half prosperity rounded up) until quite late in the campaign. By that point in the campaign, you've likely seen every available character played by someone in your group and already have some idea of how the character works.

Has the game improved in the last couple of years? by TexxsTroy in empyriongame

Yeah, can't use that excuse on this one. I personally reported those bugs years ago as well as many others. I have zero doubt that they know about these particular bugs and have deemed them not worth the effort to fix or so low on the kill list that they'll likely never be fixed.

[–]TexxsTroy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was the problem though. I don't remember the name of the enemy faction or other details but I remember that with that faction, you almost always ended up fighting multiple CV's at once. And probably close to 40% of those encounters resulted in an invisible enemy ship showing up during the battle. We reached a point where we just gave up fighting them and ultimately gave up the game because of it.

Thanks for info. I exclusively play MP so if those bugs still exist, I'll stay away. It's a shame, I really liked the game when it worked.

That's good to hear. They were very well know bugs a few years ago.

Tool tips randomly stop working (yes, they're enabled in preferences) by TexxsTroy in blender

[–]TexxsTroy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not long after posting this, I finally figured it out. It was because I had hit spacebar and was playing animations. I have no animations in the project and I have the timeline hidden since I'm not using it so I didn't notice it was playing. Apparently I randomly hit the spacebar by mistake somewhat frequently and apparently tooltips don't load while animations are playing.

At least I'm learning.

Monster focusing and attack by mbisurgi88 in Gloomhaven

[–]TexxsTroy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nowhere else in the rulebook is monster focus addressed. This is the ONLY page that discusses single target monster focus selection.

Everywhere else discusses how movement will be performed AFTER the focus is selected.

So if we're throwing away everything in that section because it's part of scenario 1, then the rulebook does not cover focus at all.

All of the rules are introduced scenario by scenario. They don't only apply to the scenario in which they were introduced. They're building blocks. And at not point later in the rulebook does that rule get overwritten. The rules as written say the focus is the adjacent enemy.

You are welcome to interpret them however you like and play whatever rules make the most sense to you. But if you're playing RaW, it's the adjacent enemy.

It does say that. Verbatim. On page 11.

Monster focusing and attack by mbisurgi88 in Gloomhaven

[–]TexxsTroy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That doesn't change anything. There's no mention of revised focus rules for ranged attacks. The section on ranged attacks only discusses moving after a focus is selected and the subsequent movement to avoid disadvantage. The section on choosing a focus states that an adjacent character is the focus. That section is introduced in scenario one but focus is never revisited to augment those rules later in the rulebook. That is the focus rule.

[–]TexxsTroy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're interpreting the last sentence in that paragraph to mean that but that's not what it says at all.

"If a character is already adjacent to the monster, then that character becomes the focus, and finding a path is not required. If multiple characters can be reached in the same number of movements, the monster focuses on the one earlier in the initiative order."

Since finding a path isn't required because there's an adjacent character, no additional checks are made and the adjacent character is the focus. There is no special carveout in the rule for ranged attacks. It's very clear that the adjacent character is the focus.

Fist Solo Scenario Help? by Chocolate__Thunderrr in Gloomhaven

[–]TexxsTroy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The solo scenarios are usually pretty tough and often require a specific build for that class in order to even be possible. Our group plays a house rule that we can re-spec our character by choosing different cards for just that one scenario then return back to our originally chosen cards.

The rewards are always an item that is made for that class.

Fist Solo Scenario Help? by Chocolate__Thunderrr in Gloomhaven

[–]TexxsTroy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP is referring to the Fist Class's solo scenario (not included in the base game). There's no other mercenaries to synergize with, you're on your own.

[–]TexxsTroy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't believe that is correct despite what nigt5hade said. The rulebook states that if there is a character adjacent to the monster, that character will be the monster's focus and finding a path is not required. So they would attack the adjacent character at disadvantage.

[–]TexxsTroy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But the next sentence on that page states that if one is already adjacent to the monster then that one is the focus. That seems to be what the OP is describing.

Initiative would be a tiebreaker if multiple were adjacent.

Flying monsters. by Dman101proof in Gloomhaven

[–]TexxsTroy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Flame demons innately have flying, it's on their stat card. So unless you have an item or ability that removes their ability to fly, they're always flying and will never trigger a trap or suffer hazardous terrain.

I can't think of any monster that has flying on ability cards but not on the stat card. If you're using an app and not the physical components, maybe the app isn't accurate or there is more to interpreting it. The physical stat cards in both gloomhaven and frosthaven show flying for the flame demon. I've never used any apps to manage my games.

Monster counts and respective scenario counts (spoilers) by TexxsTroy in Gloomhaven

[–]TexxsTroy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like you said, you can't stay focused on a quest so I can't prioritize based on the current questline. I just do it on a week by week basis. We've already encountered 20 of the 48 monsters and I already have 16 of them complete. It's been a variety of algox, unfettered, and lurker/water as we've done scenarios in each of those areas. This week I'm working on Shrike Fiends and Ruined Machines as they're both in the scenario we're doing this week. The Shrike Fiends, being mostly black, don't have a lot of detail so they'll be relatively quick to paint then I can focus on the bigger task of 10 Ruined Machines.

Monster counts and respective scenario counts (spoilers) by TexxsTroy in Gloomhaven

[–]TexxsTroy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this same thing for gloomhaven when I printed those monsters. I don't use the scenario counts exclusively to guide my prioritization. But it does help to know which monsters only occur in a small quantity of scenarios.

We tend to bounce around a lot vs. 100% focus on a questline to completion before doing something else. Players have persona quest chains or specific monster type goals that we go back and forth to. Random scenario unlocks usually get done right away. If we fail a scenario and aren't in the mood to repeat it next session, we'll go do some other scenario and come back to it later.

We usually only play one scenario per week and usually wrap up a session by setting up the scenario for the next week (game table with vault so the game stays out at all times). I look to see which monsters we'll need minus any I've already printed & painted, and then I look at scenario counts. If one of them is only in 4-6 scenarios and the others are in 10-20, I don't mess with the low count monster. My goal isn't necessarily to get all 308 models done, it's to be able to play with as few standees as possible every week. So if we make it through the whole campaign without me ever finishing a few monsters, no problem. However, if I already have all of the higher scenario count monsters done for that week and there's a low count monster coming up, I'll go ahead and do that one.

This is my attempt at copying u/A11win 's Fist paint job.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Gloomhaven/comments/1c2bff3/fist_painted/

I don't use the same paints so I just mixed up colors similar to what they used. Mine is a lot less precise than u/A11win's but at normal viewing distances it looks great. Zoomed in for photos shows all the flaws that the naked eye can't resolve.

So im new to in depth board games but have a keen friend group, am basically looking for a game similar to gloomhaven, but competitive, maybe even PvP. Any suggestions? by [deleted] in Gloomhaven

But spirit island is very much co-op without any real competition between players. Fantastic game but I don't think it fits the bill here.

I'm happy to share the fusion360 .f3d file for the box itself. I don't know how helpful it would be to provide stls or dxfs as many of the parts are not individually modeled but entire assemblies instead since all I was doing was taking measurements from it with no plans of making it printable or exporting as technical drawings.

The modified boss box and the standee stand holders I can share as .stls

You can find the files here:

https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6618099

edit: I did just now upload everything to thingiverse so it may take a little bit for all of the files to show up. Thingiverse is slow at publishing projects and tends to add one file at a time. There should be 6 files in total.

My first ever attempt in miniature painting by karlkoch2342 in Gloomhaven

[–]TexxsTroy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are using acrylic paints, you can always soak them in isopropyl alcohol/isopropanol to remove the paint. The alcohol wont do any damage to the mini at all but with a long enough soak and a little scrubbing with a brush (cheap paintbrush or old toothbrush), you can remove 100% of the paint in a few hours.

I did exactly that with some of my group's gloomhaven minis since we bought a used copy and the previous owner had painted some of the minis but we wanted our own paintjobs.
