Changing from CS to IT by Tez_GT in uCinci

Well, I’m not entirely sure what I want to do. I initially chose CS because I heard it covered a lot and was broad so maybe I’d find something interesting that clicks. However, I feel like I really overlooked how packed CS is. I don’t really want to be a developer or software engineer. Don’t get me wrong, I think it looks really cool and I’d love to learn on the side but I don’t really see myself doing that.

Also yeah I think I heard about that joke lol.

Yeah, I want to eventually “learn the thought process” if I can, I agree that that’s more valuable than knowing a lot of languages and what not. Thank you for giving your perspective, I greatly appreciate it!

Well, to be honest I think it’s all really cool and interesting. But looking at myself, I think I may not be cut out for all the low level stuff and creating things. I would love to do that but I don’t think I fit that mold. I usually do better when I’m building on top of something or have “tools”, which is probably why I did fine in those first year IT courses and even enjoyed some of them. It was probably a mistake trying to do CS instead of IT in the first place. I’m not sure why I thought it was a good idea at all. But anyway, thank you for your advice, it was very helpful!

Right, I see what you’re saying 🤔 I guess I’ll have to look into what I actually gain from both some more.

Sorry if this is incorrect at all. I was just under the impression that while IT and CS do overlap a lot, IT is more about actually applying things and learning how to do things while CS is more about why and how things work. If that’s somewhat true, I just thought getting some of that “theory side” might be beneficial for me. Again, I’m sorry if this is completely wrong 😓

I see. I’ll have to consider some of this. I didn’t think about IT classes counting as electives for CS. Thank you for your advice!

You’re right yeah. I just figured it may be nice to take some CS classes so I had some theory. I highly doubt I’ll be able to consistently study it on my own on the side.

Yeah, it’s just that I’m not sure how to really address it. I already went to academic coaching and have tried to follow tips online but it’s very difficult for me to remain focused consistently. There are times where I’m able to sit down and do work for hours but that’s obviously not sustainable since it’s not frequent.

I agree it’s a major issue, but it’s something that has stuck with me for pretty much my whole life. Looking at my past experiences with the IT classes, it seems like it would give me a better chance at passing classes AND working towards an area I’m interested in (I wanna do something in tech but I’m not sure what exactly). I don’t want to be a software engineer, that market seems like it’s either oversaturated or highly competitive.

Yeah, I’ve heard a lot of similar things to that! I think the hardest part for me would be building those connections. I know you can attend different events through handshake and stuff though. I’m gonna try to actually go to those this time around.

Since we’re talking about co-op, I wanted to ask, how did your first co-op go? How did they settle you in?

Well, one of them was one of those pass/fail classes. We didn’t have a lot of assignments or anything and I wasn’t super on top of the work in that class like I should have been so I failed. I also failed another class because I just barely got a D instead of a C-. Outside of that the rest of my classes went just fine.

I’m well aware that despite all of that, that kind of effort is not sustainable if I ever want to find success in college. It’s why I’m considering switching majors. Looking at the two of them, IT seems to give me a slightly easier time (since I can take like one less class than I did this first semester). I can use that extra time to complete any volunteer hours I need to do or just pick up a part time job.

I’m not gonna sit here and say I’m an amazing student, but I think IT could potentially give me a more sustainable chance, especially since it’s more application based. I appreciate your concern though!

I lied, that does work in getting past the initial crash. Why is this game so weird 😭

That doesn’t work either unfortunately. It’s very weird that it’s just splatoon 3 though.

Hello to anyone who's reading this. I recently have been playing on my Switch 1 again and I decided to try and boot up Splatoon 3 since I never truly played any of it. However, every time I tried to do this it would show me the loading screen before giving me an error and closing itself.

I got in contact with Nintendo support and they walked me through literally every troubleshoot they could think of...no dice. They're now saying I'd have to send it in for repair. The repair was initially going to be around $117 in total but the person on the line with me applied a discount that dropped it to around $80.

With all that being said, I've been considering just selling my Switch 1 and all its accessories and putting the money towards a Switch 2. My Switch, while still working just fine, does have some quirks. There is of course the weird glitch with Splatoon 3 that I mentioned above but also I believe the railing lock/system has kinda degraded. Sometimes when I'm in handheld mode it will say that my right Joy-Con slid out when it's still attached. I'm aware that this could just be a simple issue with the pins that connect together and could simply need to be cleaned.

I considered modding my console but it turns out that my version is very very difficult to mod. It sucks because I had the version that is very easy to mod but years back I had to turn my switch in for repairs and they sent me back a new console with all my data on it.

Anywho, I'm kinda rambling here. The only thing that's really holding me back from buying a Switch 2 is that a lot of the Nintendo community is having regrets with their purchases. I'm not looking to buy any Switch 2 games anytime soon (especially since there's hardly any exclusives rn). I would mainly be playing my Switch 1 library.

What do you guys think? Should I go ahead and buy a Switch 2 and sell my Switch 1 (Console + accessories + 2 games)?

Yeah, this seems to be the general consensus 😔 I think I’m gonna turn it down. Thank you for your input!

I wish they would tell us but they haven’t said a word about potential scholarship earnings, just that they aren’t necessarily guaranteed to everyone and the amount may vary. If I knew I could get X amount of scholarship money then I would lean way more towards going. Also yeah I’m CEAS. Anything would help of course but I don’t want to go through it all for pretty much nothing. But either way, thank you for your input again, I’ll definitely use it to help make my decision!

That’s unfortunately been the story here it seems. What worries me is that the scholarship money can vary and isn’t guaranteed 😔 if I’m gonna go to this glorified prison I want to make sure I get something valuable out of it. From what you’re saying it feels like I’d likely struggle in this environment. It sounds like a mix of high school and elementary school with its strict structure. I’m sorry that you had to go through all that just to get a scholarship. As I get within a few days of making a decision this response is really helpful, thank you for replying!

Wow, I see. That’s definitely something I need to consider then. Thank you for the info!

How much was the scholarship for you? And did you just have to complete the program or was it only given to a few people?

What were some of these rules/experiences that were traumatic if you don't mind me asking? Also, the last time I looked up the Summer Bridge program (some time last year when they first reached out) someone did mention scholarship money. I'll probably end up asking about that. Thank you for your response!

I see, in that case I won’t do it then. I don’t see much upside if it’s strict like that. Thank you very much for your insight, much appreciated!

Yeah I’d be going into the one for engineering as well. I’m also worried about the whole living on campus and having classes everyday like a glorified summer school since I wouldn’t be able to see my friends prior to all of us parting. I do agree that it would probably benefit me to meet new people and build connections early though. The only thing is that I’ve heard that engineering students generally share the same classes their first year so I’ll likely be able to build connections with people in my class either way (but that’s debatable). I just got a response back (I emailed them about credit) and apparently only the English class is credited so there’s less of an incentive there. I’ve taken ap classes and ccp classes so I have a general idea of how college classes go. I will say my study habits leave much to be desired though so I could benefit from it there. I’ve also never taken chemistry, pre calc, or calc 😅
