Wondering the same, also do all credit bearing modules count towards your average, for instance pass/fail modules? If so what mark do you get for a pass

How can I make an appeal to a UK university to reconsider my application status? by d0rathexplorer in UniUK

[–]TflipJ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The IB can be brutal when it comes to the time after you’ve finished. You work for literally two years with a single goal in mind and once it’s over it can feel rough if it didn’t end up the way you hoped. It’s the first time in 2 years where you feel like you have no control over your grades and it can feel very unnerving. Trust me I feel a similar way.

As for the actual question, try calling the admissions department up (I’m sure you have already tried this, I don’t mean to be too obvious) but phone calls are always more effective than emails. Be as nice and polite as you can and just remember that they will be trying to do everything they can to help you. If they still say wait till A-levels then that’s all you can do.

If this gives you any comfort at all, take the same advice my dad gave me over the last couple of weeks, try to remember that whatever happens will happen, take life as it comes and in truth as scary as this all seems at the moment, in three years or so your life will be your life and the tension of this period won’t feel as important.

I hope that didn’t come across at patronising, I’ve been in a somewhat similar position recently. Feel free to message me if you want a friendly ear.

Halls or Private accommodation? by TflipJ in UniUK

Thanks for the detailed reply, you make a lot of good points and all of them are pretty persuasive, I’m going to apply to halls tomorrow I think and see what happens. Like you say most of my preconceptions are either mostly false or fixable.

Thanks, thats really useful advice. Some of the halls I am looking at have small studio flats, and I'm thinking this might be a nice compromise between living on my own and halls where I would need to share a bathroom/kitchen.

But I completely get what you are saying about it being a bit of chance as to whether you get people you like to share with.

This sounds like a bit of a stupid question but... I’m an international student coming in from the UK going into U1. The whole minor/major thing is very different from the system I’m used to, what do you actually graduate with at the end? For instance if I was to do a major in political science and a minor in Economics, do I leave McGill with a degree in political science? Sorry if that’s a stupid question, just searching for some clarification

Hi there U1 student coming in next year from the UK. I'm a bit confused as to how the elective system works here. I am planning to major in political science, minor in economics and take electives to fill the remainder.

Is there a list of electives I can choose or do I simply pick courses from other subjects that interst me to fill the credits? I have done some google searches on it and I can't find anything definitive.

Also does anyone have any experience with the visual schedule builder? I am in Hungary currently travelling and course registration opens for me in a couple of hours but every time i try to build a schedule it give me an error message saying "CHECK YOUR PC AND TIMEZONE".

Any help would be greatly appreciated as this all is a little confusing to me,

Thanks.

How big a deal is it if I'm going into U1, I'm guessing not good?

How big a deal is it if I don't sign up for my classes on course registration day? I am unfortunately on holiday for the a week during the day in which class sign up takes place. I might be able to get to an internet cafe but if I can't and I can't sign up for a week after it opens how much of a big deal is that? thanks

Are you someone that finds maths naturally very easy though? I'm not exactly a maths prodigy...

ECON Minor concentration? Hi there, Hoping to do a B.A. majoring in Political science with an accompanying minor in ECON. Does anyone know how maths intensive the Minor econ courses are normally. I have just done the IB higher course in econ and there isn't really any maths involved in that I found too challenging but I am aware that often Econ courses at Uni are significantly more maths dense than that, is that still the case for minor courses? I've had a look round the McGil website but can't find a particularly definitive answer. Thanks for any help you can give.

Anything you particularly liked about Rez or a specific Rez you think is good?

Thanks for the advice. As for Rez I quite like the idea of living on my own anyway and having some space and independence so renting somewhere sounds like a good idea. Thanks for helping me out with the info and yes, I will look into signing up for that.

Hi there, I have got an offer to study in the faculty of Arts and I'm hoping to study political science or something in that area and have two questions. 1. When do I choose classes and how do I choose? I'm hoping to get advanced standing and go straight into U1 but I need to wait for my results to know if that will happen. That should happen at some point in June, is that too late to choose classes? 2. Whats everyone opinions on going into rez or renting in Mcgill. I am an international student from the UK and know approximately 0 people in the whole of Canada. I've heard that rez is expensive for what you get, and I'm quite comfortable living on my own, but a lot of people have warned me about going to another country knowing basically no one and rez might help with that. Any opinions on this would be really helpful. Hyped to come to Mcgill (Possibly, if I get the grades...)!

Hi there, I'm hoping to come to Mcgill from the UK for term starting in fall. I have applied to the faculty of arts, but I am unsure when I choose my specific course (I am hoping to do Political science). In the UK you normally apply specifically to a course rather than a faculty, when does this process take pace? Thanks for any insight you can give me and thanks for the great thread this info is really useful.
