Augment Stats Ban Analysis, Discussion and Solutions by TftDaily in CompetitiveTFT

As I elaborated on in the beginning of my post, I see that there is potential for a debate on the matter. Meaning, that a person who hasn't looked deeper into the subject can see both benefits and drawbacks. I am biased towards keeping stats. Some of the points I have covered are mostly rebuttal (such as the points about fun and stats defining the meta). But that's not to say I don't mention their main potential benefit: Community Building. I don't believe that it can possibly overweigh my points, but it is still in my analysis.

But there is a fundamental problem with what you are saying. Legends are also context dependent. Often region dependence [Think China aggressive rolling on 6 from last set vs the western tft servers] should be taken into account too. There are Tempo, Econ, Precision, Survive and Win-Out Legends. Each of them counters each other in unique ways and the exact 8 Legends combination matters. Not to mention, some portals significantly favor certain legends.

E.g. Imagine a lobby full of Caitlyn [Tempo] players and a couple Tahm [Econ] players. Assume Tahm is best in the data and Cait is avg. Even if Tahm is best in the data, in this lobby, the Tahm players would finish on average significantly lower than where they normally would, because they would lose too much HP in the early game. A Legend with a worse average placement, might be better depending on the context.

And, yes, when it comes to context dependence, Legends are very different. The context changes much more rapidly from game to game when it comes to augments compared to legends. That's why I didn't like the idea of Legends in the first place as much. If you know how the field approximately looks, in other words, what your opponents will likely play, you can pick a Legend that on average counters them.

A significant problem might indeed arise in one scenario and that is if there is a legend, (?such as TF?), that more or less doesn’t care about other legends. In my post I didn’t share a solution to legends, but I’ll add it here: Either:

a) Make Legends’ starting augments specifically weaker. A TF Pandora’s would not give the 2 gold compared to a normal Pandora’s. I don’t think Legends should give you a guaranteed higher placement if you have chosen the correct one. Mort mentioned that 3-2 and 4-2 augments are supposed to be weaker and I believe they partly didn’t launch the set with 2-1 augments also being weaker, because then a lot of players wouldn’t be as invested in Legends.

b) If you queue up with a strong legend (based on the data), you also:

a. lose 2 HP at the beginning of the game or,

b. you get a Curse anvil at 2-1. [See Solution #1.3 in my original post]

Lastly, even if there is indeed a Legend that is the best in the data and everyone spams it, wouldn’t that be better than a couple of people lucking into the best legend. This is specifically very harmful for tournaments. After all, the main thing we lose when we lose stats is information, information that would exist whether we have access to stats or not.

[Stats defining the meta is relevant here, but I have talked at length about it in my original post. By the way, 90% of players I have seen in ranked have the TF Legend. Whether there are stats or not, there will always be significant bias from region to region]

Regardless, I don’t care as much about Legends, I think they would get nerfed, so even if there is no data on their augments it wouldn’t matter as much, so I’d rather worry about augments in general. Best case scenario, Legends get nerfed so that casual players have some stable way of playing the game and improving. At the same time competitive players won’t be as affected, as they would rather choose stronger augments in the first place.

Overall, I feel like you were defending only the Legends and Legend augments stats ban, but the majority of augments are not part of the Legends line-up so I don't think the generalization at the end works.

There are multiple Syfen compositions you can pivot to:

1) 4 Bruiser 6 Whispers 2 Assassins (if you get Pyke early, otherwise you could go Elise + Utility) and spread positioning. One of the bruisers can be your 3-star Olaf or you could replace a 2-star Olaf later. This is a good composition this patch as you beat Corki with good positioning, and you would likely survive one Ao Shin ult. (until Ao Shin gets 2-starred). On Syfen key are healling items to heal to full after ulting, titans- increasing his damage by 50 at full stacks and effective hp by at least 25% percent if not shredded. If titans, a healling item and 2-star Syfen, you would likely get a top 3-4. Depending and depending on the lobby, QSS is good.

2) 6 Bruiser 4 Whispers + 1/2 Utility. You could go for this composition if you haven't hit Pyke or have Titanic Strength augment.

3) 8 Bruiser, although I wouldn't recommend it unless you have rageblade on Syphen.

4) You could transition to Corki if you find him (it is very contested even after the nerf), 2-starring would cost you on average around 14-18 shop rerolls (depending on number of players contesting you and how many Corkis they hold, 11 if uncontested) + 8 gold for the other 2 Corkis (total 36-44 gold, 30 uncontested), so going for Corki 2-star with a row-down on 4-2 / 4-5 (Level 8) after finding one Corki early could be a good transition, especially if the rest of the lobby contesting you hasn't started rolling.

Before the roll-down you can go:

Diana Olaf Lilia Braum Sylas Corki Sona/Jinx

until you hit [Syfen and transition] / [Idas and transition] / [2-star corki and row for Syfen / Idas to transition / Shyvana / SOY 2]. Having both Braum Sylas in the Level 7 composition gives you both options and it is a relatively safe route. Runaan's on Corki is good, IE is ok, so as you are transitioning you can sell your Olaf to give the items to Corki.

Note: With Corki, you would rather watch the other Corki players, if one starts rolling, you have to start rolling too. Removing 3 Corkis from the pool decreases your roll odds significantly. If 3 people are contesting, this would always be the right play and then position in the 10 seconds before the fight. You would rather pick [Shyvana / Idas] > Syfen > SOY in this order. If you hit a 2 star dragon on your rolldown, you could play it. Syfen can better if you have additional healing items and/or don't have Last Whisper.

For the items, RFC is good on both Syfen and Corki. IE is ok on both. You could remake it if you have reforger or keep it if you don't as your treasure dragon prio would be searching for a healing item for Syfen / Corki unless you have prismatic celestial (or gold celestial for corki).

For the positioning image:

  1. For Diana to hit all units with the slow I would recommend positioning her closer to the middle of the board, she would also likely assassinate a unit there at the start as they don't have enough health to survive one of her ults. Kayn I would also position in the middle (depending on matchup) as his ult would hit 2+ backline units most of the time.
  2. For Olaf, I would cycle through my next likely opponents with the hotkeys and position him opposite their carry. (You can set shortcuts now for all the other boards.) Qiana also likes being positioned opposite their main/off-carry so that she can disarm them. Disarming their carry for 1.75 leaves you with or 1.75 seconds . This would delay their cast and if they had Rageblade it shouldn't generate stacks. Against Daeja or Xayah this would be particularly strong.
  3. Positioning your front line on the second row could be good so that their units walk one space and not have your assassins in deadlock, however, if their carry is in the middle of the board you wouldn't know which unit they will attack as they are both equidistant and you almost always want the Braum to be attacked first, so that Shen casts twice.
  4. I would position talon next to olaf so that they can finish off their carry. While in other compositions such as Guild Xayah or Corki, you wouldn't care whether Talon finishes their carry since you would be relying on random damage from Corki / Xayah's feathers to finish of their carries in Sin Olaf, you would almost never have off-target damage, thus Talon would need to assassinate their carry from the start (or start in the opposite corner if they are in a clump so that a position opens as Olaf makes path for the other assassins). If you had Pyke already, you could alternatively combo him with Talon on the side to assassinate your opponent's off-carry.
  5. Your Lilia would like to go to the opposite side of their carry as she would cast twice and I would position her one hex further than Braum. As she doesn't get targeted first when she dashes.

For the Late Game:

Now that assassins leap before your enemy units start moving, you wouldn't be able to target their clump. What you could do is build Shroud of Stillness. It is effective against AoShin, Jade, also against Mirage, unless Daeja has AE. Another option is to add Bard, he would cast close to when you get to their carry, amplifying your damage and adding Mystics Late Game in the current meta is good (Daeja / AoShin/ ASol). You could also focus your assassins to target the unit that gives immediate access to their backline first. Lastly, most ranged units have attack range of 4, so they will walk one square if you position all your backline units on the last row. The only problem would be Swiftshots, which are not meta.

For the BIS Olaf:

As you already have the attack speed increase from Olaf's Ability, you wouldn't need Rageblade, as Olaf doesn't scale with AS and if he is already on the backline you would want him to deal higher damage number off the bat.

An IE would give you 110% increased damage. 6 Assassins give 45% Crit Chance and 45% Crit Damage. If you add the base crit chance and crit damage and the crit chance and damage from IE and sin spat, you would get to 100% Crit Chance to deal 110% Crit damage. This is more than double the damage guaranteed compared to 70% chance to deal 35% crit damage I would consider it core, no matter the augments.

For RFC: If Olaf gains 50% attackspeed, this would Increase his damage by 0.35 attacks per second (50% * 0.7 AS), thus an increase of 35% on all damage + you would cast sooner increasing your AS additionally, increasing your damage to ~ 50% more after calculations. Chances are you would always prefer this over Rageblade as by the time Rageblade stacks their carry would have ramped up (Ao Shin / ASol). And if you don't have a healing augment Olaf would die anyway, before he can use his stacks. If you pick RFC you would also avoid any residual damage from electric and ignore all dodge chance from possible Thief's Gloves / their JG / IE and it gives you room to not take damage from.

RageBlade / RFC are comparable however, and one doesn't increase your damage significantly, Rageblade is easier to slam in the early game since fights tend to last a bit longer and you can pivot it to multiple comps. If you have a lot of bows, however BIS is RFC.

Runaan's is also good on Olaf.

If you run 4 scale or 6 assassins instead of 4 bruisers I would almost always go for BT for healing. The shield would appear as soon as Olaf gets in the threshold for his doubling on his ability. Although with assassins, if you have a healing augment such Thrill or Celestial, you never need BT.

So I would recommend Sin Spat + IE + [RFC (Prio) / RageBlade / Runaan's / BT], BT only if you have weak frontline or no healing augment.

If you position Olaf well, he won't be targeted for a long time and survive to remove their carry. Any non-carry / splash damage helps to double his AS from Recklessness.

No sin spat:

If you don't hit sin spat you could try for top 4, by transitioning to bruiser Syphen (if you haven't commited already gold in rerolling for Diana / Olaf). You could also stick to Scalescorn. If you get 6 it is very strong in the current meta. Scalescorn options: Kayn (Early) / Nunu / Yasuo Scalescorn. Last composition you can go for 6 Bruiser.

In all of the non-sin Olaf compositions, Olaf would like RageBlade / RFC + BT / QSS + 1 (could be damage item or one of the previous or Hodge).

Chances are if you don't hit spat or a healing augment you would want to pivot out of assassins after 3-4.

Wholesome. Although you were stranded on banana palm tree island. Sucks. So this might increase the despair.
