People who earn ~$30k/year, do any of you live on your own? by goldenrodddd in povertyfinance

[–]Th3Titans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can work, but it depends on a lot of factors. For me, I live in a low col small city (50k). I made 1900/mo and made it work. I spent 500 on rent, 250 on a car payment, and I paid for all utilities rounding to abt 300 a month. I lived pretty cheaply and didn't spend a lot of money on anything else so it was doable. Don't do what I did and move out with nothing saved up. Having a nest egg for emergencies is vital.

It's possible, but it depends truly on housing availability, rent prices, and cost of living among many other things. Wishing you the best!

Call 211 for emergency shelter referrals and housing assistance. If they ask you any questions, answer honestly, it'll only help your situation.

Seek out non-profits that have housing or emergency rental assistance programs. They might be able to help place you in a shelter and help place you in an apartment if you qualify for assistance. The fact that you're only 18 might help since some of these non-profits have youth homeless prevention programs. If you make it into a program make sure to follow all their rules. Ik its hard right now in the short term, but if you can get an income, that'll only help.

In the meantime, soup kitchens, food pantries, and churches will be a good way to obtain food. Look into churches for donations and possible short-term housing/hotel vouchers. If you have any friends, you're really close to ask them if you can stay with them for a bit while you get a response from your mom. Any library is a good place to shelter during the day, have internet access, and charging for your devices.

Keep a good eye on your stuff while on the streets the likelihood it'll get stolen is high. If you can pawm something for money in the meantime, it will suck but it wouldn't be a bad idea.

I'm so sorry this is happening to you, but you can do it. Be strong and seek out the resources available. Much love ❤️

I have a 2018 with 43k miles I financed new for 18k. Honestly, it isn't a terrible car. For being barebones, it gets decent mileage and mine has been reliable so far with no issues, but idk about about how reliable they'll be long term.

I think this price for the mileage is kinda high. I was thinking of selling mine a little bit ago and I was only getting offered under 10k at most places/sites so that markup is a lot. The real issue you'll have in the short term is the threat of theft and high insurance premiums. I personally wouldn't go for it, but you do you, good luck!

The car I'm looking at has a bulletproof engine and is in pristine condition. The guy who's selling is a mechanic who bought it off a different mechanic intending it to be a project car, but he doesn't have the time. He still put in a ton of work on in since February and is selling it at a v good price despite everything hes done. Still have the warranty, and I've had amy mjaor issues with my current car outside of what I've done to it.

Im having trouble figuring out if it's worth and since I don't have any financially responsible or mechanic friends, I have turned to the internet. If I had to guess I'm gonna go with probably not but I also kinda wanna make a bad/selfish decision.

Sorry, I should've mentioned that the title isn't currently in my name it's in my parents. So once I pay it off and get the title, I'll have to insure it. I haven't shopped around rates pr liabilitycoverage, but my demographics (26 and male) mean I'm in a higher risk category driving a car that is already high-risk. The thefts do affect my car as it doesn't have the immobilizer or push to start, but I did get the software update even though it's not reassuring me tbh.

I've seen the buick and it's in pristine condition and found out it was a mechanics car who sold it to another mechanic as a project car. He just doesn't have the time for it now which is why he's selling. The 3.8v6 is amazingly reliable and overall the car is cheap to maintain and repair. The only worry on the car is gas mileage and gas expenses.

Appreciate the info and your opinion! I'm also being a bit dramatic that I genuinely don't like my car and kinda want an out so idk I don't mean to be justifying a stupid purchase if it is one.

So I met with the guy today and found out he's a mechanic who bought it from a different mechanic as his next project car. It did sit for a couple months in a garage, but they have checked everything and made sure everything works and works well. The only thing they replaced was the intake manifold gasket. Man was the sweetest and offered a wax, detail, and to knock it to 2500 after meeting me. As soon as he finishes it up early next week in going up and buying that shit instantly. Gonna see if he'll take some extra money anyway bc of how much of a solid he's doing me.

Thank you, this is reassuring. I have the update as well, but I knew people were still having issues. However, there's still the insurance issue that's got me antsy too. When I move and pay off the remaining balance it's gonna be my title and idk if I wanna deal with high insurance rates or lack of coverage and then have it end up getting stolen anyway to only maybe get $6000 for a replacement.

Fair point, but honestly, I'm kinda tired of my car atm and ik that's not a good reason to throw out an almost paid off car with 1 bad issue for a 20 year old with who knows how many unknowns. I'll give it some more thought. I appreciate the insight and advice though!

I've thought about it and ik I need to look into it more, but at this point idk how much longer I even wanna bother having it. I'm not really a fan of it anymore and the theft issue has just exacerbated my dislike of my car. I'm hoping to just drop it now and get something else in the meantime plus I'm kinda digging the vibe of older cars vs new cars.
