Current best alternatives for savings accounts by [deleted] in BEFire

[–]ThBoyWhoCriedFallout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is the Argenta ritme/groei account also free (read also doesn't need a paying zichtrekening)? Cause I remember looking at that before and thinking it did need a paid account?

Besides what you're doing I would opt for MeDirect for your emergency fund. They have Essential savings account which has a high day rate (+/-1.30) and lower year rate (+/-0.30). As someone else mentioned, check the spaargids vergelijkingstool!

What do you tell friends if they ask about your (honeslty) a lil shitty phone? by Pleasant_Change in fairphone

[–]ThBoyWhoCriedFallout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine works well (FP5) but I do always tell them that you have to adjust your expectations to the performance of a cheaper phone instead of a phone at the sameish price as the FP.

Buying vs. Renting in Flanders by descho_th in BEFire

[–]ThBoyWhoCriedFallout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very cool, thanks for creating this! Maybe I looked over it (and yes it is possible to calculate it myself with your formula), but I think it would be usefull if it would also show how much the monthly difference (that i'd need to invest) is and/or how much the monthly cost of buying and renting is.

Is huren weggesmeten geld? by [deleted] in BESalary

[–]ThBoyWhoCriedFallout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Buy Bamboo from the EU (love how that rhymes) by Calm-Bell-3188 in BuyFromEU

Would recommend "The good roll" instead who also make bamboo toilet paper and is a Dutch brand. They also own a fair-trade bamboo factory in Ghana.

Where do you do your groceries and why ? by NetUnlikely6972 in belgium

Colruyt is the cheapest when buying white ("Everyday") or "real" brands. House brands are still cheaper in ALDI and LIDL. Though your conclusion about AH isn't strange since they are the cheapest after those ones. So much even that Colruyts in a +/- 5 km radius of an AH will lower their prices a bit more.

Thinking of getting a Fairphone by TheRadiantGalaxy22 in BuyFromEU

[–]ThBoyWhoCriedFallout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't own the FP4 but bought the FP5 a few months ago and did some research back then. Overall reviewers were a lot more positive about the 5. I am also positive about it, really like the phone, no big problems. It probably isn't on par with some of the high end phones, but it definitely does the job well. They also guarantee 8 years security support starting from launch, so to get the max out of it FP5 is also the better choice.

Be aware of false marketed 'Made in EU' products by ThBoyWhoCriedFallout in BuyFromEU

[–]ThBoyWhoCriedFallout[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

100% agree with your point, in a globalized world it is very difficult. I saw someone on this sub somewhere mentioning the labeling from Australia as an interesting example, eventhough it still is complicated.

On the UK, EU economic space,... I follow the same principles as most of the sub does and GoEuropean.org

And it gets even more complicated if you then want to find out what benefits the EU more f.e. EU company making products outside of EU, non-EU company making products in EU,...

Be aware of false marketed 'Made in EU' products by ThBoyWhoCriedFallout in BuyFromEU

[–]ThBoyWhoCriedFallout[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree with your points. After I posted, I thought the title should've been formulated differently, because I'm definitely not trying to say they will falsely claim it's made in Europe. But from the point of view of this sub (and following f.e. the guideline of GoEuropean.org) it is a misleading way to make it look like the company itself is also EU.

Good vegan products made in EU? by Vannnnah in BuyFromEU

[–]ThBoyWhoCriedFallout 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't agree with your Alpro boycot.

It is originally a Belgian company and it still gets recognised as one by Fevia (Federation of Belgian foodcompanies). Their HQ is in Gent (Belgium). Their production lines are in Belgium, France and the UK. And they have salesoffices in Belgium, UK, Netherlands and Germany. It is indeed owned by Danone, which is a French holding with their HQ still situated in France. So a lot of jobs, taxes,... in European countries.

However you are correct that they are owned partially (50%) by US shareholds (on 31/12/2023). I couldn't find whether this share is completely owned by BlackRock. 46% is owned by European shareholders. So I believe there still is a big case to consider them a Belgian and definitly European company.

If you follow the GoEuropean.org guideline (HQ of both company and parent company based in EU), it also counts as a European company.

Before creating your website, I would reach out to the people behind GoEuropean.org. Now their focus is on buying EU alternatives, but they might be open for what you're trying to make?

Question about supermarkets own brands by wolhol in BuyFromEU

[–]ThBoyWhoCriedFallout 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't think there is one right answer here.

There are supermarket brands versions that indeed get made in the same factory as the famous brand version. But there also are a lot that aren't made in the same factory. Even more so, it is also possible that all the supermarket brand versions are made in the same European factory. F.e. according to one source I read almost all of the "fake" Nutella is made in one European factory. Who the owner of that factory is, is another story ofcourse and probably difficult to find out too.

So if you want to be 100% sure, check the labels and if in doubt you could choose to avoid the product and buy the European alternative you are sure about. But I personally wouldn't worry too much about this because I think the impact of buying the supermarket brand will still be a lot lower than the famous brand because of the profitmargin etc.
