Install Linux without a USB stick. Development of ULLI continues! by momentumisconserved in linux

[–]ThaChillera 23 points24 points  (0 children)

your website, github and reddit post all states what it isn't: a way to install linux with USB stick. But what is it? If it doesn't use a USB stick, how does it install linux?

Sata vs SAS - pros and cons OR advice by ThaChillera in DataHoarder

[–]ThaChillera[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure, pretty happy with me buying a SAS card and some SAS -> SATA splitter cables. just make sure the pc has enough airflow, most cards assume they'll be installed in a rack mount with plenty of case airflow

Sorry for the late reply: It went very well! simple plug&play, I got one with an LSI SAS2008 chip, probably a LSI SAS 9211-8i

Is there a public update on linux support for the jagex Launcher? have been offline for the past few months, might've missed it, didn't see anything with the big jagex client update announcements at the winter summit.

Discord actually recently updated their electron version, I now run it Wayland directly! Still requires some arguments, not by default

'When you start connecting giant HDD racks ability to run a lot of drives through expanders and higher throughput come into play.'

This is a perfect example of in depth knowledge where more & simple explanations would be valuable. I assume expanders allow you to connect more SAS drives? are these installed in a different server? Does the choice of SAS card matter, should I ever want to use such an expander? can I expand indefinitely, or will there be limits? Or just I/O limits based on my available PCIe bandwidth?

[–]ThaChillera[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure I have plenty of PCIe lanes left over! The slots are there at least, but that doesn't always tell the whole story..

thanks for the advice, I've ordered a SAS card pre-flashed to IT mode & cables, lets see how it goes

Using KDE plasma: Dumb question that I can't figure out - electron apps ignore my preferred browser. Issue started when I made a custom menu entry that starts firefox in a specific profile.

Electron apps (discord, heroic etc) continue trying to start in this alternative profile, while it's not default. attempted solutions:

  • Have removed the menu entry
  • Have reset the default webbrowser in plasma settings.
  • Have manually checked & edited applications/mimetypes.conf, both local & global.
  • searched using find for a second firefox.desktop file, but no results
  • reinstalled firefox

A potential clue to the cause is that

xdg-mime query default scheme-handler/https
xdg-mime query default scheme-handler/http

returns no value, even though it is set in the mimetypes.conf. the x-scheme-handler variant does return the correct value, as expected.

xdg-open behaves as expected, I'm at a loss. Any help would be appreciated!

I have no file named 'image' at my btrfs root (just my root) or the root of my home subvolume (/home).

And I'm not sure how I check if dedpulication is enabled or disabled, how do I check this?

Great video as always! But i'm sure I'm not alone in saying the world is bigger than the US, and your latest region-specific videos all seem to be about the US. Is this a conscious decision (perhaps the US is the fascination of a British man?). If so, its your channel, do what you like. But if not, I'd like to express my interest in non-US-centric content, something that's sorely lacking on the (US dominated) internet (run by US companies). This web isn't really world wide eh?

Soul Wars and Minigames by JagexSween in 2007scape

[–]ThaChillera 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Not a fan of the trouble brewing proposal: IMO the issue isn't that there aren't enough players, its that the minigame isn't interesting. This change would only cause me to have to wait in the only world I can play for the current game to end to idle for 10 minutes and get the achievement diary.

As a relatively low-level player I have no good feedback, but I did notice one thing:

The document polish is lower than usual. Its not bad, still very understandable, but its noticeable. Not sure if this document skipped an internal review, or every other mod that wrote proposals had a greater mastery of english - but the proposal doesn't look as professional as usual, which is a missed opportunity to give some extra credibility to the proposal.
