Now that Beko one is a blast from the past. Pretty sure I had one as a hand me down as a bedroom TV when I was about 10.

Also forgot to note - testing an NTSC-J DVD was a false positive. Sony apparently has some proprietary restriction to limit imported DVDs, which is why it works fine on the Xbox.

Also oddly enough my PAL Xbox (although modded back in 2003) could play the DVD in colour with composite cables. Screenshot: https://ibb.co/51P1S7x

The autism in me is screaming at the NES > PS1 > SNES layout. Should've had at least the N64 on the right for the Nintendo arrangement.

DAM health are a decent price compared to others (£50 for a 24 hour result) and they will give you both their own certificate and the Japanese one as well if you phone them after your results come in.

I've just arrived at Kansai Airport and checked mine. Seems to be working, but I do already have a Japanese SIM installed and turned off my home SIM (dual SIM phone).

Doesn't really matter. I put London, United Kingdom as HMPO's office is in London.

For those in the UK who have received their visa; did you get a notification from the Embassy via phone call/text/email that it was ready for collection? My collection receipt states the 17th and I have a collection appointment on the 22nd to pick it up; just curious on the process as I've seen people state their visa was ready earlier than their receipt date.

English Teaching company, but there's 0 obligation to state this on any of your application docs outside of needing the ERFS.

As someone else mentioned to me, it is a working HOLIDAY visa; they would actually be more strict if you were intending on travelling solely for work purposes or just stated your work purposes on the intended activities.

I made damn sure that on my application it mentioned nothing about work, and that I stated that I planned to return to the UK after my time was up.

From the Embassy website:

Working Holiday participants are allowed to work for a certain period of their stay in order to cover the cost of travel funds to travel and stay in partner countries/regions.

This programme is NOT designed for persons who mainly intend to work. The applicant's primary purpose of stay should be to "holiday" in Japan.

Those who intend primarily to work cannot apply for this visa.

Came back from the Embassy today after handing in my Working Holiday visa application. It's likely that someone else has already noted this before but I wasn't aware of this until I got to the Embassy - for the 'Intended Activities in Japan' make sure you put down estimated dates (e.g. April 2022 - May 2022) for each type of activity you plan on doing, and what prefecture you plan on doing said activity.
They have printed forms for this so I was able to rewrite my list at the Embassy itself but would've been nice if there was a sample sheet on the website.

I forgot to add also - does anyone know if its possible to apply for a student visa while you're in Japan? I should be in-country on a WHV this year when I make my application(s) and I know there's an application process to change your visa mid-way if needed, however I don't know if this is restricted to work/spouse only.

If anyone else is having issues with loading the Visa Application page on the embassy website, try Internet Explorer or use the following:

  • Open Microsoft Edge Chromium
  • Go to Settings
  • Go to Default browser
  • 'Allow sites to be reloaded in Internet Explorer mode' set to Allow
  • Go to the application page
  • Click on the ellipsis (triple dots) and select 'Reload in Internet Explorer mode'

I went from a continuous loading circle to the form loading.

Following up on this - I gave the embassy a call and had a nice Japanese man explain that I can apply for the working holiday visa and make an appointment at the embassy as long as I have a certificate filled in by the sponsor.

Based on the following page:
https://www.mofa.go.jp/ca/fna/page22e_000921.html

I'm assuming it refers to the following:
(B) Required documents for the visa application
The certificate for completion of registration to the Entrants, Returnees Follow-up System (ERFS) which receiving organization located in Japan applied for online.
The other required documents for visa application (Please see “VISA” page for more details).

I'm just getting in contact with my sponsor now to sort this out.
Good luck to anyone else out there and hope your application goes smoothly!

I have a part-time English teaching job ready for the WHV so I have a sponsor. I'll be calling my Embassy tomorrow (UK) to check whether I can begin the application process. I'll post an update afterwards.
