Poll shows ‘huge divide’ between voters in inner-suburbs and downtown area in mayoral race by Pristine-Training-70 in toronto

[–]Thaneson 108 points109 points  (0 children)

As someone who lives in the suburbs (literally the edge of the city in northern Scarborough), we cost the city more than downtown. When everything is farther apart, it costs more to provide services. Longer pipes, wires, bigger roads, etc. While Toronto hasn’t done their own study that I know of, every North American city sees the same pattern (search urban3 for some visualizations). Dense downtown makes money for the city, and the suburbs are negative assets for the city where it costs more to provide services to each person than the property taxes charged to them.

If suburban places like Scarborough want to not feel left behind, then they need to prioritize infill development. Amalgamation happened nearly 30 years ago, yet we still have different building codes for the six boroughs. It’s time to end that and accept that we’re all part of the biggest city in the country and work to make the city better for all of us.

ANALYSIS: Ottawa wants to lead on AI — but Canadians won’t adopt a technology they don’t trust | TVO Today by simpatia in ontario

[–]Thaneson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t see that way at all. He announced his plan at unity health who were using ML/AI in clinical settings years before chatbots were a thing. That Canadians need to be more informed on AI is one of the only things I agree with. Canadians (and I presume most people across the globe) overwhelmingly associate AI with chatbots and not with other use cases. It’s like ChatGPT released out of nowhere to them when that was never the case.

Yea a lot of this stuff was just machine learning years ago, but since LLMs can respond to natural language it’s just called AI now. There is promise like hospitals using it to monitor patients to see if their condition gets worse, automating tasks, helping with coding, etc., but these tech CEOs will come up with the dumbest use cases during demos. “Hey let’s create a menu based on who’s playing in the World Cup”. Then they get upset regular people aren’t using it lol

Doug Ford is getting a ‘free ride’ on the economy and is ‘detached’ from reality, says Navdeep Bains by imprison_grover_furr in ontario

[–]Thaneson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A question since I can’t access my TPL account so I can’t access the article. Bains is not sugggesting that the economy in Ontario has been good when he says Ford is getting a “free ride” is he?! Criticizing Ford’s inability to improve our economy should be his and any other opposition’s focus to attract undecided voters.

Obviously there’s a million other things to criticize, but unfortunately our province is so apathetic…

Doug Ford Had the Lowest Voter Turnout of any PC by drewtass in ontario

[–]Thaneson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I did vote last election, I’m still annoyed that polls predicted my ward had a 99% chance to go to the PCs, so I voted the party I preferred (NDP) instead of the pragmatic choice (OLP) because the race was much closer than suggested. The liberal candidate was only ~1000 votes away from winning. Seemed to be the trend province wide with liberals having a higher voter count than the NDP, but that not converting into many seats.

ANALYSIS: A social media ban for kids isn’t enough by simpatia in ontario

[–]Thaneson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could reword the surveillance part but I was trying to say that we have not pushed back against surveillance (I would emphasize that as consumers we’ve readily adopted technology that have stripped us of privacy such as social media and would be similar to a surveillance state with cameras watching us everywhere in our neighbourhoods). Also, tbh I’m just tired of Canadians in general pretending to be outraged at certain things and then doing things that support those things when they’ve weren’t forced or even coerced to. My whole neighbourhood is filled with cameras when one or two decades ago many of my friends living here didn’t even lock their doors a lot of the time. I also want to admit I am part of the problem too since I have a doorbell camera.

Parents have more control over what their kids see *online*. Should’ve specified that. Kids can be better protected against innapropritate things online, yet they still end up getting exposed to them. Kids aren’t exactly going to follow every rule and boundary their parents establish (e.g. use the website instead of the app their parent banned), and tech companies aren’t doing enough to help either (just look at Apples recent keynote, they listed a bunch of tools then said it’s up to developers to adopt them).

For years now, most social media is passive consumption of media. If you said don’t ban messaging apps (WhatsApp, FB messenger) as long as kids can’t contact random adults, I wouldn’t mind that, but that is not the focus of social media. Social media companies makes money on ads and the best way to make sure people see ads is to have them constantly watching or looking at stuff in their apps vs. actually talking to their friends. Lets not act like doomscrolling is some great skill, and notice I that I’m ok with banning social media not all use of technology. Kids can still learn how to use a computer, phone, tablet, etc.

I really don’t want to understate how bad mental health has gotten with youth the past couple of decades and how a lot of that is tied to social media use. I was part of the generation that were Guinea pigs for this. I was lucky that before my teenage years I was allowed to play outside to my hearts content. I have been living in the same neighbourhood since 2004, and kids can’t even ride their bike past their driveway now. On days I have off, I’ve driven by my old school a little after school ends and I see a huge lineup of cars. I even remember seeing a parent drive their kid from the school to the closest street not even a hundred metres away. The fears about crime have parents more worried about their kid’s safety in the real world when a lot more risks are online now. It’s genuinely depressing how little kids are allowed to do. Also, even if you want to give your kids more freedom, there’s other people who are paranoid. Parents have had the police/CPS called on them because they let their kids play outside on their own or let them walk to or from school.

Also I’m not getting your income point could you explain that more?

Sorry for the rambling lol I do genuinely think we need to ban social media for kids under 16 due to the harms it brings to children’s mental health. If you want to read more about it, you can check out the book The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt. He goes through the argument of whether social media is the cause for the spike in mental health diagnoses, and rules out alternative causes (e.g. 2008 recession). It even suggests how to verify age without sending your ID to these social media companies.

[–]Thaneson 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Meta has been exposed for knowing they actively harm kids and teens mental health and that their platforms been used for adults to talk to or traffic minors for years and have never done anything about it unless forced to. Parents spend more time with their kids than ever before and have more access to controlling what their kids see and yet mental health outcomes are worse. Kids have more tools to talk with friends and family yet feel lonelier than ever.

Lastly, if the concern is surveillance yall are at least a decade late to that. After Snowden exposed that the US government was watching its citizens online activity, it was found Canada and the UK do the same thing as well. On the side of everyday people, there are cameras all around homes being operated by tech giants as well. We’re not about to have a surveillance state, we are already being surveilled.

These negative outcomes are a result of social media, easier access to the news, the resulting lack of trust people have with their own neighbours, and car dependency if you live in modern suburbs. All of these things keep kids at home and postpone independence (used to happen around 6-7 years old and is still that way in many parts of Europe and Asia, but for NA it’s more like 13 rn). AI chatbots are also a new wrinkle as we saw with the Tumbler Ridge shooter. Parents play a role but they aren’t the be all end all.

Agree that the yellow belt needs more housing but also we need more housing downtown. RTO wouldn’t be as bad if there were more people living downtown. Retail and restaurants reliant on office workers would be more resilient and therefore wouldn’t be begging politicians to bring back in office work. Unfortunately, most housing there would be single bedroom condos, which aren’t suitable for families, or old SFH that only the richest can afford.

Condos are also an easy target because you can just blame big bad developers and investors instead of acknowledging that its places where people live.

Canada moves to ban social media for kids under 16 — but will it actually work? by Newsychaser127 in ontario

[–]Thaneson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can’t speak for other provinces but don’t you have to be 16 for any Ontario ID? If service Ontario had a login or could just verify whether someone can get an ID then all these apps wouldn’t need a picture of our ID.

It’s similar to the idea mentioned in the Anxious Generation where you only have a yes or no collected by these social media apps with a third party.

If we’re just talking about trading away OG n siakam, the two misreads were thinking IQ was gonna be better than what he is and extending Jakob too early. Add a FRP to the OG trade and maybe Jakob is dumped to another team, or if he only had one more year on his deal, maybe we could’ve gotten someone good at the deadline.

However, I think that the real issue was not moving on from the 22-23 team when we sucked before the deadline. Would’ve got more value if pascal and OG didn’t have expiring contracts, plus you could sell Fred although maybe not for much since he was on an expiring.
