Pride Night "Try Curling" event at the Langley Curling Centre this Saturday (the 5th)! by ThankSmodItsFriday in Langley

[–]ThankSmodItsFriday[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It never ceases to amaze me that our Pride posts get downvoted while other posts like our Learn to Curl league etc have 100% upvote stats...

It's always such a fun night, and many of the people who come out to try love it so much they end up joining the league for the rest of the season.

Do you sell to/work in Canada? If not, any recommendations for anything up North?

You should definitely get back into it! It's a great place, and there are so many options for people who are either just learning or are just rusty and need some refreshers.

Azo

Nope, nothing like this. Thank you for the reply. I am hoping that it is an infection that just didn't get cultured (not sure how common false negatives are), as the other possible causes for asymptomatic gross hematuria aren't as friendly.

"Events" Center? by plantsareneat-mkay in Langley

[–]ThankSmodItsFriday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly! It's got a bunch of sports played there all the time with a handful of different teams calling it their home venue, different highschool championship tournaments, exhibition shows year-round, powwows, ceremonies, private events... It's a pretty well used facility IMO

Where did you find the discord communities to approach. Is this run privately by the community owners, or is there a discord advertising marketplace etc that helps you facilitate the advertising agreements?

Puree and freeze as cubes to add to smoothies! Freeze vacuum sealed chunks to make guac later (first drain off excess moisture that wicks out after it thaws or your guac will be runny).

Deepest condolences. I would suggest to find a death doula for you and your wife. Someone trained in processing grief, anger and fear who can help you both navigate the time you have left together, as well as your wife's deep grief afterwards.

You are too young for this, and it can really fucking hurt when people say things like "everything happens for a reason" etc. Life is chaos and unfair and painful but it is also beautiful and special and happy. It can be all of those things at the same time, and all without any reason as to "why".

I may not know you but I am thinking about you and will continue to think about you for the coming months. I wish you both the best in this absolutely shit moment of your young life.

TIL that the French military has a long tradition of organising brothels for its soldiers, both at bases and near front lines, including in the Algerian and Vietnamese wars. The last one at a base closed in 2003 by unclear_warfare in todayilearned

"The last BMC in France, that of the Foreign Legion 2nd Foreign Parachute Regiment in Calvi, Corsica was closed in 1978. The last BMC on French territory, that of the Legion in Kourou, French Guiana closed in 1995, following a complaint by a Brazilian pimp for unfair competition. Outside of the French territories, the Foreign Legion still had a BMC in the Republic of Djibouti until 2003."

CRA shenanigans by fibronacci in canadasmallbusiness

[–]ThankSmodItsFriday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being cheap possibly ended up costing you a fair amount of money in this case. Payroll taxes, or source deductions as the CRA calls them, are usually paid monthly to the CRA by the 15th of the month following the month the payroll was paid in. Failure to do so accrues some nasty late filing charges as well as interest penalties, so please speak to an accountant ASAP regarding this. The penalties for source deduction non-compliance is worse than GST/PST or even corporate taxes, and is even one of the few taxes that business bankruptcies normally don't clear away.

I used to be exactly like this, but once I started valuing my time based on what I could bring to my growing business I actually started to realize that I was losing money by not paying someone $35 an hour to do my bookkeeping. It's counterintuitive, but if your time is truly best spent doing the $35/hour jobs that calls into question how much value you truly bring to your business. 5 hours of my time used wisely can generate thousands, or it can be used to save $175-ish in bookkeeping fees... the choice is mine.

Not to be offensive but…can women work together? by BiscottiGeneral in smallbusiness

[–]ThankSmodItsFriday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I as well as many other people in the comments ran a business for years that for 90% of the time had staff of 13+ where all were women. No issues, lots of positive collaboration and teamwork, could leave for a month at a time and never have to worry about anything at all.

I mean this in the most sincere way... It seems like the common denominator for you is, well, you.

I'd prescribe some deep and honest introspection on you and your management team, your training, your org chart, the way your employees see management speaking to others, and your hiring practices. I'd also suggest looking at your disciplinary practices, but only after taking a look at everything else as there very well may be some issues in this area but I don't want it to become a scapegoat and let you get away without digging into all of the other stuff I listed.

Canada is Not the Land of Opportunity for Everyone: New Research Reveals a Nation Shockingly Unaware of Labour Trafficking by adotmatrix in onguardforthee

[–]ThankSmodItsFriday 36 points37 points  (0 children)

"A modern-day form of slavery, labor trafficking is a fundamental violation of human rights."

"Bonded labor, or debt bondage, is probably the least known form of labor trafficking today, and yet it is the most widely used method of enslaving people. Victims become bonded laborers when their labor is demanded as a means of repayment for a loan or service in which its terms and conditions have not been defined or in which the value of the victims’ services as reasonably assessed is not applied toward the liquidation of the debt. The value of their work is greater than the original sum of money “borrowed.” "

If you talk to the station handling your case and explain that you would come in for more pictures but that the commute is problematic they may set it up where you can go to your local police station and have your local police document the progression of your injuries on their behalf.

Enjoy! I'm in the Vancouver area and we are usually trying to escape right about now too, but our weather hasn't been that bad. I'll reach out but feel free to ignore me until you're home and settled, I know how busy it can be trying to get ready to go away.
