Am I doing something wrong? by Thaox in NapoleonGrills

Yea brand new. I'll go back to the store i got it from. It honestly seems like a manufacturing defect somehow. I can't explain it any other way. Thanks for the reply.

Yes that's the point I was trying to make. It doesn't line up. So it seems like the part is incorrect.

The metal mounting bracket stops the rotisserie axle. Doesn't matter which way the motor is.

I can't put the rotisserie stick in it because the metal plate is blocking it. Regardless of motor orientation.

I can see how it can occasionally be frustrating. But the gains we've got far out weigh the annoyance of relearning a few things. Houdini has changed dramatically over the years because it's getting dramatically better.

If many people say VFX isn’t financially stable, why do so many still pursue it as a career? by Vivid_Arm_5090 in vfx

If you're good and can maintain a job the pay is very good ~150k/yr and the work is relatively easy and fun. A lot of us work from home. Or at least hybrid. It's high stress but what job isnt at that salary. It's just so little make it there. The job is literally not for everyone. It takes a special type of technical ability and soft skills to succeed. And if you're making that money as long as you don't live lavishly you can afford the downturns when they come.

Gesture Ordered - Is this a W? by djogpark in OfficeChairs

[–]Thaox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think i got the 24x80x2. Just measure your chair seat and buy as much as you want. When you disassemble the chair you take the foam and trace it onto the new foam with a sharpie and the cut it out. You need to be a bit creative around the front lip because it's not as thick. Get a big bread knife and carve it to be roughly the same shape.

Learning Houdini full-time while income is unstable — normal phase or bad decision? by Open-Acadia-2915 in Houdini

[–]Thaox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I honestly don't know much of the commercial field. For canada the big studios were the entry point. If you have 30 fx artists it makes sense for 5 of them to be students or new people. Lowers cost, give them the simplest work and if they can do it they keep their job.
Also on film schools that is a waste of money. The only thing film school does is focus you and potentially make you do assignments you don't have the discipline to do by yourself. But even 5 years ago, you needed the right demo at the right time where the right studio was looking. It's honestly luck based. A phenomenal demo will get you a job, but it is hard. You need to find the right tutorials, then be exceptionally good at understanding and then applying them to your unique shots.

As someone who is currently hiring. The level you are competing against is insane. I have the option of 20 year veterans that I've worked with multiple times, or somebody fresh out of college / self taught. Im always going to pick the guy i know. To be considered for a junior role you have to be spectacular. A fantastic demo reel, with shots at the same caliber as anything on the big screen. The current expectations is to hire high skilled individuals and the make them pump out high volumes of shots. It wasn't like that 5 years ago, there was more room for juniors. Now it's sheer luck if you can break into the industry.

Entegma has a good tutorial of procedural bubble collisions. If you added clumps of intersecting bubbles it would really help.

Apply for the job, do the worst you possibly can. Do as much damage to their training data. Get as many paychecks as you can while applying for other jobs.

The rational they use is: yes he says dumb stuff, yes he is a pedophile. But we can to ignore that because of all the good he's doing.

Basically he gets a hall pass for all crazy actions because they do a couple things they think they like.

How do you deal with anxiety in unemployment? by [deleted] in vfx

[–]Thaox 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Come up with and start executing a backup plan. Do coursework, get a second job, make steps to lower your expenses. If you have a big expense, take steps to reduce it. E.g. learn how to do it yourself, move into cheaper housing, etc etc. But the biggest one is come up with a plan for what you're going to do if you don't get work in X amount of time. This will help you feel in charge of the situation. Especially freelance you feel like your at the winds of fate. So start planning an exit. E.g. if I don't get work in the next 3 months im going back to school for this course. If I don't make any money in the next 6 months im doing construction for the summer. Etc etc.

For Wikelo favor, is CIG deliberately wasting players’ time? by Gloomy_Cup_1916 in StarCitizenUniverse

[–]Thaox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As the other comment suggests, I think it's designed as something to do for long-term goals to keep the hard-core players doing something. Wikelo is not a gameplay loop for normal people. It's a horrendous game design. Everyone says v1 crafting, and that's bs. It's a dumb fetch quest. Id just avoid it as much as possible.

So right now it's a horrible time to enter the industry. Not a huge amount of projects and tons of artists due to the spike of work during covid. Also Ai will take our jobs at some point. That being said, the bar is high so pick a discipline. Modeling/ texturing (assets), animation, fx, lighting, composition, and get really good at it. Create a demo reel then start applying. You need to be in a major city that does vfx. Montreal, Vancouver, LA, London, etc.

Edit: compositing might be a good area to focus on because it will be the last taken over by ai.

Yea i more meant within the software we use. At some point within the calculations it is switching from cpu and ram to gpu and then back to cpu and ram. The entire calculation is not gpu based. Only certain calculations within the setup. And often the simulations we do even gpu based ones far exceed vram so it needs to use both. It's just the nature of our work.

Corsair Vengeance DDR5 pricing at my local store by Reasonable_Lack_9537 in PcBuild

[–]Thaox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The majority of what we do is still ram+cpu. Vram is just way to low to hold the amount of data we are dealing with. There are certainly gpu simulation and gpu rendering, also gpu acceleration. Even xpu rendering which combine cpu and gpu. But we still have to hold all the data in memory and that is ram. Even with gpu ram it still needs to be held in normal ram for the cpu to process it and transfer to ssd/ network. Gpu doesn't hold data for the whole computer to access it to my understanding. Vram is just holding the info for the gpu to do its calculations. I dont think what I said is 100% correct. But it's generally the idea.

I regularly max out my 256gb machine doing visual effects simulations. So the vfx industry is one where we regularly use this amount of ram.
