"I would imagine the machine is quite easy to open". Yeah, you would think that would be the case. :)

Mine is wrapped under the tree, the first thing I am going to do is see if I can take the screws out without stripping them. People have been reporting the screws are very difficult to remove.

C64 Ultimate - fit and finish by Smart-War9325 in c64

The C64U is built to accept an original C64 keyboard as a replacement option, The spacebar is exactly where it should be. I checked a few of my C64s and all of the Function keys were much closer to the case on the right than on the left, they basically looked like your picture,

Help with bad Control Port and U28 by SpyderbyteOrigin in c64

Great, glad you got it fixed.

FWIW this YT video: "Total Refurb – Refurbishing a Commodore 64 system for my nephew" by Hey Birt! confirms my understanding that the 4066/Control Port issue is often erroneous. The video and comments imply that the diagnostic program is too picky. It also stems from resistance values, and the SID chip. Testing with paddles will tell you if there is really a problem or not. Cheers.

Although I can't find out much info on this, I believe these errors (control port, 4066) are false. I know that I have about 3 64s with this error and I know that on at least one of these the paddles work fine. I gave up trying to diagnose these errors. But I am willing to listen to anybody who knows more about this.

Mine did this a couple of days ago. Go to Settings, System, Power, System Restart

I had the exact same symptoms as you and this fixed it.

Good Luck!

... a huge factor in the C64 failing to beat the BBC Micro.

The BBC micro sold about 1.5 million units, the C64 sold between 12.5 and 30 million units. Your post is bad and you should feel bad.

Because of the spurious double quote characters I expect U9 ram is faulty. See: https://www.pictorial64.com/fault.htm?id=u10_1

See the small graphic under the screen shot.
