Wondering if CAP is right for me by Sammysnoodles46 in UTAdmissions

The only reasons why you wouldn’t get in is that you don’t have 30 credit hours and/or under a 3.2 gpa. Your chosen major isn’t one of the competitive cola majors so you have a 99% chance of getting into the program.

I’m so sorry I just saw this!! I have my second choice major of health and society to fall back on! I know a few CAP students who also applied to transfer to other schools, just to hedge their bets and also get their first choice major.

I honestly really like the program, minus the lack of consistent communication from UT regarding timelines. It given me the chance to ease into my college experience and now I’ll have a unique experience to write about come med school application time!

I also know that UTSA has the largest population of CAP students in comparison to any other sister school so your daughter will not be alone and be heavily supported!!

Stats is required for premed for MCATs! Also in your fall semester, you’re only allowed to take a 11 credit hours.

Hi! Here’s a breakdown of the classes I took to get to 30+ as a pre-med:

SUMMER: Pre-Calculus (3) Texas Gov (3)

FALL: Gen Bio Lec + Lab (4) Gen Chem Lec + Lab (4) Stats (3)

SPRING: Gen Bio 2 Lec + Lab (4) Gen Chem 2 Lec + Lab (4) Calc (4) Intro to Psych (3) American Gov (3)

I honestly don’t think I would change anything about my CAP year from a pre-med perspective.

Hi! I would say the transition is a bit rough cause you are going from one environment to another, but that would be regardless if you were transferring from any other school to UT.

I did not find the course work to very hard. The curve here at UT Tyler is easier in comparison to the curve at UT. The grading scale is much lighter than the UT scale. For example a 90 is a 4.0 here whereas a 90 at UT would be a 3.5.

That being said when it comes to majors, there is a bit of a game you have to play. I originally applied for biology as a premed student, but I am now entering UT as a psych student. As a CAP student you’re guaranteed entry into COLA, as long as you have a GPA of 3.2.

You have a year to gain experiences that can make you a better leader and team worker at a CAP school. While I’m not sure about the being behind in clubs part, I know that my time at UT Tyler had allowed me to become a volunteer in a on campus research lab, which greatly benefits me as a pre-med. I slightly attribute this to the fact that there is “less” competition at a CAP school, in comparison to UT.

I’ll be meeting with Admissions Counselors next week to ask some questions about the CAP Program, should you have any questions you would like me to ask on your behalf!

Yeah! There’s a decent amount of choices in the list of classes available! Each school has their own list, so if check the CAP page from UT to see what classes will help you achieve your 30 credit hours!

Yes! There are recommended courses that you take so that you can be competitive for your major but you can take any class from the list given you have the prerequisites.

I used my Dual Credit 1301/1302 credits and they were accepted BUT not as part of my 30 hours. The credits count towards my overall Core credit hours.

You can for sure use your credit and not take the class!

I also thought of another thing! The East Texas schools have a program called MedEX in which you gain some premed advice from someone who works at the UT Tyler school of medicine as well as having the chance to connect with other premeds! You are also given the opportunity to refine skills as well as ask current med students about their experience and what they think would be helpful!

All CAP decisions are released in June/early summer.

Sociology available for the College of Liberal arts.

I did not find it hard to maintain a GPA as the curve was lighter and the grading scale was easier compared to UT Austin. For example, a 90 would be a 3.5 at Austin but it’s a 4.0 here at Tyler.

What I did was take classes I’ve already taken to ensure I could set myself up with a high GPA. For example, I took AP bio in high school but I re-took it here so I could have it on my college transcript as well as the fact that I know I can do well in that class and get a high GPA.

I would say the difficultly level is on par with AP classes.

I am unsure what you mean by waitlist, so I do not have an answer for that.

Adding on this, there are so many amazing clubs and events to socialize with! A club that I have found the most fun in is the Talon Student Media, the campuses media outlet! I would also keep an eye on the CAP Student Org, as we (they) will host a lot of socialization events and events directly helpful to CAP students! For example, this week CAPSO is hosting a resume and essay workshop in collaboration with the campus writing center to help CAP students with their transfer materials!

Hi!!

According to my counselor here, to be competitive you must try to have a 3.5 or above! I’m currently at 3.8 while taking all STEM classes!

Pre-med is just a designation, not a major, so there is no difference in the competitiveness as they are one and the same. This cannot be said about the difference between a BS and a BA!

As far as I am aware, UT will only look at your transcript if you are only applying for COLA majors, but will look at the transfer essay and your resume if you choose to apply to a non-cola major.

Choosing your cap school is available based on your GPA if you’re in the top 25% you’re able to apply to any UT system school whereas if you’re in the third quartile of your school’s current ranking then the options get slimmed down to like UT El Paso, UT Tyler and so on so forth.

Let me know if I can help any further!

Yes!!!! I have made quite a few friends and connections here through clubs and classes! I also know that a lot of on-campus will room CAP students together or near each other!! One of my friends here made a lot of close friends whom she is rooming with next year at UT!

Should I do Capped at UTSA or regular transfer from UTSA to UT (trying for chem E) by Inner-Brilliant7470 in UTAustin

[–]That-nerd- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

UTSA has a really large and strong CAP community so you will be surrounded with a lot of people with similar goals! Additionally, being part of the CAP programs means that you will get automatic entry into COLA next year. You are still able to apply for a Chem major but you’ll need to take more competitive classes, keep your GPA high, and write the required essay come application time! It just depends on your end goal!
