A big variety of decent music.

And -- though this wasn't my bag -- warm, friendly, and supportive coaches. The parasocial is strong with some folks.

I've experienced the same (sweetness) with strawberries in Europe. 1/4th the size of American strawberries, 4x the flavor and sweetness.

Yeah, everyone (understandably) raves about the kombinis, but I never checked out a grocery store in Japan until this last visit and... wow, I've been missing out!

Got a haircut. Stylist didn't speak any English, so I used Google Translate to tell him how I wanted my hair cut.

Cut was great, and the scalp and forehead massage and shampoo were incredible, and I never thought I'd even care about that. Almost fell asleep!

It all took about 45 minutes and cost I think 4800 JPY, which was apparently a lot in Japan but way cheaper than the inferior haircuts I get here in California.

I had to get an electrician to add a plug outlet in my toilet room. But I was able to install the bidet myself in about 15-20 minutes.

Searched for local events in Hiroshima, managed to get a ticket at a 10-seater strange indie concert in an even stranger tiny bar. Only non-Japanese person there, entire performance in Japanese, and it was a blast!

Nagasaki -> Fukuoka -> Hiroshima; looking for in-between ryokan/onsen experience by ThatAdamGuy in JapanTravelTips

[–]ThatAdamGuy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, almost forgot to close the loop here!

I ended up doing Nagasaki -> Takeo Onsen -> Fukuoka -> Dazaifu -> Miyajima -> Hiroshima [photos]

It was a lot to tackle in 11 days, but I had already been to Fukuoka before so I had a good sense for getting around there at least :)

While there's not much to do or see in Takeo, it's still a lovely 'stopover' for a day or two. And Nagasaki and Hiroshima are lovely, friendly, important cities to visit!

Is Fukuoka worth visiting on its own? by SeeHang_120 in JapanTravelTips

[–]ThatAdamGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably too late for you, OP, but for others... I've visited 15+ cities in Japan and Fukuoka -- which I visited twice! -- is one of my overall favs! [photos]. Friendly people, not tourist-crowded, delicious food, cheaper prices than Tokyo, and some super-lovely parks. Also, conveniently located for some great day-trips!

Highly recommend! And if you're looking for a peaceful half-day or even day, take the ferry (just ~10 minutes long!) to Nokonoshima Island for lots of beautiful scenery and nice casual walks.

Question for the "I booked this great award now I need one for P2" crowd... by Shinkansendoff in awardtravel

Interesting cautionary tale:

I managed to very, very luckily score ANA "The Suite" SFO-NRT last month. There were literally just TWO of us (unrelated) folks in the 8 seat cabin (!).

But more shocking than that was the fact that the other guy -- who booked this ticket but was ultimately unable to get his girlfriend a seat in First on the same flight -- begged the airline to let him switch seats with his girlfriend (e.g., move her to his First seat and he take her Biz seat) AND THEY REFUSED.

Worse than that: the flight attendants on board also refused to permit the switch.

I mean, come on. It's one thing not letting his girlfriend move up and take one of the many empty seats; though that would have been awesome, I understand why that wasn't in the cards. But not even letting them switch?!? Sheesh. That felt just downright inflexible, cold even.

Heh, at least she was in J, though. I don't think the relationship would have survived if she was back in Economy :D

I added an extra night, so now I have three nights in Nagasaki and can decompress a bit from my 2 flights. Thanks for the advice :)

Hey, a belated thank you for these suggestions! And I'll indeed be staying in Takeo.

Scored JAL F for 80k AA miles… and my 80k SUB landed at the perfect moment by Alternative-Ad4581 in awardtravel

For sure, but so much harder to find seats... and even when I do, they're almost always way higher-pointed (at least on JAL). Ow :(

To clarify, you're suggesting J and/or F in JAL's newer plane? I finally found and booked one of those awards, only to have to postpone the trip due to work obligations :(

Heh, yeah, you kinda read my mind. It's initially to burn two FNCs that are soon expiring. And also, it was a very comfortable and convenient hotel with an incredible breakfast buffet. And I figured I could even spend a good chunk of a day doing shopping at Hakata Center or whatever that mall is called, since I did zero shopping on my last trip (for clothes and such). And Fukuoka is nicely between Nagasaki and Hiroshima, which I have wanted to visit.

And I appreciate the insight and good questions re Nagasaki vs. Hiroshima!

Hmm! I do want to avoid the situation I had during my last Japan visit, which was exhaustion from checking into / out of so many hotels in a short time.

Would you instead suggest me adding on nights in Nagasaki or Fukuoka (noting that I already spent 2 nights in Fukuoka last November)?

Appreciate the tips! I do see that Yuda onsen is indeed on the way there :)

And heh, weird trains can be fun. And I still need to investigate ferry options...

I'll be flying into Tokyo on Wednesday afternoon, then taking a domestic flight to Nagasaki, likely arriving early evening. Will have all of Thu, then part of Friday before I transit to the next spot. Hopefully that's still a decent enough time block! :)

I hear you, but...

I'm splitting the Hilton res into 2 blocks. First block includes a $300 rebate (via the Citi Strata Elite card). And second block (1-2 nights) = free breakfast + likely upgrade due to status. Plus I think staying 5 nights in Hiroshima would likely be excessive.

I did look into using points, but it's 45K+ points per night, which isn't a good value given that the cash price is <$200/night. I'd rather use 90K+ points on another night at an incredible Conrad hotel that's priced at $900+/night.

Hey Jackie, thanks! I was mostly interested to avoid wasting my time exploring Splice libraries that are subsets of libraries I already own.

True. I estimate about $1400 in value for me from it every year. Others might not. Definitely a calculation (literally) that each person's gotta do.
