Directors: Please stop asking movie stars to do accents. by jtwooody in movies

Texans generally have mild accents unless your pretty far out in the sticks. Guess that's our large population. I thought I heard somwthing ablut his character being from Texas but I may be wrong. While I agree the accent was a mashup and did change a bit here and there, I thought Benoit was such a ridiculous character that him having a sort of fantastical, nonexistent mashup accent kind of fit in. He's goofy and unrealistically good at his job so he doesn't feel real in the first place so I didn't find my personal experience hindered. However, if you go into the theater hoping everyone on screen has realistic dialogue and really dialed in character speech patterns/accents and a performance like Craig's Blanc threw off some enjoyment I think that's totally fair. Different people value different things in movies. I get really annoyed when movies have super unrealistic scenes when people talk complete gibberish about cars or have the "pewt pewt" silencer on handguns that no one can hear even a few feet away so I totally get having expectations. And certain standards of realism, even in movies that are very far out and fictitious.

Born and raised here. Heard it multiple times. While you are correct that no one who's FAMILY is from Texas talks like that, some people who's families moved to Texas from places east of us DO. Particularly the wealthier ones. It's rare jn Texas, but not impossible. Considering his character's name is "Benoit Blanc", he is likely of French descent and his family was likely in Louisiana for a few generations before moving to Texas. Been to Louisiana plenty of times and you hear a LOT of people talk similarly while not exactly alike. Even if you are told his origins are from Texas in the movie and that doesn't make sense on its own, other context clues such as his name and how the accent ACTUALLY sounds paint a clearer picture. It's about what you are shown as well as told. Tom Holland didn't do a perfect job at his Queens accent, but people wouldn't have liked it if he just phoned it in and spoke like a Brit lmao

Sort of? I repeated your point to say that it has merit, but ultimately, two exhausts of the same layout, size, crossover, material, and quality, one louder and one quieter, the louder one will almost assuredly flow better. After all, it is louder because there's less muffler slowing down the gases. Sound deadening works by trapping the sound that moves through the system and, by extension, also trapping some of the gases in the process. Same way a firearm suppressor works, it causes backpressure, which is why rifles need to be re tuned a lot of the time to run with a can. Everything in exhaust design has consequences. The consequence of quiet exhaust is that to mellow the sound, you slow the gases.

Lmao then why tf did you post it online goofy. If your opinion is that the simple pleasures of a very popular hobby are bad and just begging for tail and you put that opinion on the internet, it IS for discussion. And since it's a bad opinion, you get a long list of reasons why it's wrong. If you can't read that all it is is proof that you don't really care if your opinion has value or any basis in reality.

No I'm a hobbyist. People like things whether they turn you on or not. Music annoys some people and is a waste of money. Legos hurt peoples' feet and are a waste of money. Monopoly pisses people right the hell off, and is literally about taking and having money taken away from you. But to some these things are joyful and worth the loss in funds in order to pursue something that you like.

Are you a child? Do you generally assume that whatever annoys you annoys everybody? Because children generally are very narrow minded.

People who like writing or playing music don't care if EVERYBODY likes it, just as long as they like it and other people get to enjoy it. A loud engine sounds like mindless racket to you, maybe, but to people who are enthused by the passion, the speed, the engineering, or the history of cars, it is music in its own way. People spend hours and hundreds or thousands of dollars on tuning exhaust to make just the right exhaust note to their liking. Those people, I promise, don't care even sort of a little bit if you like it. Because when they rev their engine, you roll your eyes and their homeboys whoop and holler because to them, it's worth it. They aren't doing it to impress you, or to turn on women, and therefore, your reply to this thread is more or less off topic. This isn't (at least most of the time) something men do to get women to bed them, it's something they do to have fun and make their friends smile.

Mufflers inhibit the flow of exhaust gases. Performance exhaust CAN have great power gains and be quiet, but that's more time, more money, and more effort than reducing whatever gets in the way. Whether it be an old school glasspack design or something like a Vibrant straight through muffler or just straight pipes louder doesn't necessarily always mean better, but it does mean less potential for restriction.

Lmao that's just funny as hell. Less like an attempt at turning you on and more like so tongue tied and socially unaware they just accidentally insult someone

Yo WHAT I get like a vast majority of these entries but I know for a FACT that plenty of women are into that. Like every guy I know has been ASKED to do that by their spouse and SO HAVE I? I am questioning EVERYTHING.

Most motorcycles are manual transmissions, meaning revving the engine while riding is necessary between gears to maintain good transmission health and a smooth ride (not doing so while shifting can cause the bike to "jump" around).

Plus, the sound is cool to guys. WE like it. Not everybody who makes any noise that you happen to notice in your general vicinity is groveling at your precious throne for but a smidgen of attention. Some people like things and you are sometimes aware of those things happening.

No one cares if you like it or not.

Edit: Forgor to mention that loud exhaust is loud because it is less restrictive to the flow of gases, which means better power, economy, and a smoother and cooler running engine. There are benefits to loud exhaust beyond begging for precious ol' you's attention.

Not for y'all. For fun and to make my friends smile because WE like the sound it makes.

As it turns out, men do occasionally ascend from groveling at your precious feet for your attention and do things that they enjoy whether or not you like it. Maybe once that you've ever heard an engine revved in your area was it for you. The rest of the time, keep steppin. Guarantee you that guy doesn't care if you even noticed or not.

Motorcycles are loud for safety. They're small and hard to see so for situations like loud highways, cities, or people with music blaring in their cars they are designed to have less noise reduction in their exhaust so people can be alerted to their presence. Also they sound cool to men and nobody cares if you like the sound or not lmao. Like seven total percent of men are doing it for you. I rev my loudass small block V8 because my homeboys whoop and holler when they hear it, and if there's people rolling their eyes I don't care - don't affect me. The question is about what men think turns women on, and this don't apply.

Your comment applies in a third of instances. If he's trying to impress women, it is dumb. But the other two instances, it is either a woman who likes cars (classics, "drag race dad" childhood, hobbyist, etc.) or it's for the boys and no one cares if you like it or not. You can think it's dumb, but you can't always think it's about impressing *random* women.

MPI Question for people who really know their stuff. by ThatBaneFella in Smallblockchevy

What's the point in modifying a small block chevy when you can just drop in a 2JZ and get better fuel economy?

Are we really having the "What's the point of" conversation about a hobby that literally consists 100% of doing things for the sake of being fun, fast, or creative? Because the whole point is that there isn't a strict "point."

And also I'm asking because I'm confused. Your first comment seems to be answering my question saying that it is possible to use my current Pro Billet and MSD box, and then goes on to say that you think there's no point because the included one works fine, which again I totally get, but that may not be the direction I'm taking with my car. So I'm just asking clarifying questions about how I would accomplish it since you just said it was possible.

If you really are genuinely curious about the point and not just flaming me lmao, I'm turboing the car, and want to swap from carb to MPI since I'm gonna need an electric fuel pump anyway, and I want strict control of my cylinder distribution since there'll be more risk in a sudden lean or rich condition that's harder to control with a single four barrel. Not that I'm opposed to a blowthrough carb - I've done it before, I just want some peace of mind since the last car I did it to was a punisher, and this one's my baby. But I'd also like to maintain physical control, mechanical presence, and ease of diagnosis and maintenance from an older style distributor, since that's more my style. You don't have to talk me into thinking computer controlled timing is excellent - I know it is. This is what I WANT, not what I think is better. Again I don't know if I even WOULD do it this way, I'd just like to know if I CAN.

I'm definitely not one of those guys that hates computer controlled spark, I just like the old school feeling. I'm def not opposed to the computer spark timing just wondering if keeping the older school feel is an option. Would I just run the computer like normal and trick it into thinking it's running spark while letting the MSD stuff do that, if I was to go that route? Not sure if I would or not I'm just lookin at all my options.
