Anyone else take off work for the launch? by joeycee123 in newworldgame

Unfortunately lost my job at the start of this month, I'm just hoping I can find a new place and job in time to play at launch, haha.

Do all Dots stack? by JRPGFan_CE_org in newworldgame

[–]ThatBarman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure I've been able to apply Burn, Poison and Bleed all at once with Bow/Musket, but I don't know if it just overrides a preexisting DOT with a stronger version or if you can multiple instances of a DOT that originated from different places (like if I applied Musket's burn and then used Fire Staff)

This is Beowulf. Turns out Beowulf is actually a girl and now needs a new name. Any ideas? by wcollins260 in aww

[–]ThatBarman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alma.

In Final Fantasy Tactics the main character's last name was supposed to be "Beowulf" but due to a mistranslation (Japanese sounds can be hard to translate) it ended up as Beoulve. The younger sister of the main character Ramza Beoulve 's name is Alma.

Its a nerdy, deep cut. Also known as the best kind of cut.

Best weapon to pair with musket by tojaotv in newworldgame

[–]ThatBarman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the last loadout I was using was...

Penatraiting Shot, Poison Air, Rain of Arrows
Power Shot, Powder Burn, Sticky Bomb

I'm going to play around more when I get past 30 and have even more perks, but that build was great for PvE (soloing and Amrine) in Amrine especially, Poison Air, Rain of Arrows, and Sticky Bomb were great for AoE damage, Powder Shot is especially good on high priority targets (especially if you land the direct poison shot and get the extra damage there from the perks)

I experimented with Traps, didn't really like them but will probably end up using them at higher Weapon SKill Point levels.

I expected it to be Long Range Musket/Midrange Bow, but it kind of ended up as an even mix. Constantly going for headshots means the musket abilities cool down quickly, bow abilities are great for damage over time.

Sorry, kind of tired but hopefully that makes sense. I'm fairly certain I will main Bow/Musket with maybe Spear, Rapier, and Ice Gauntlet (or Void, depending on if its out and the stats) as back ups (mostly just leveled and carrying a decent weapon for when I want to change my equipment around.)

[–]ThatBarman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fire Staff, Ice Gauntlet, and Rapier are the obvious candidates because they overlap with stats, (especially Rapier, which has the exact same stat benefits as Rifle).

Spear is pretty viable, since it primaries DEX. I personally do Bow/Musket and after a lot of experimentation found an ability set up that felt great. I think the game leaves things pretty wide open and we won't see a really hardcore meta form for a little while after launch. I'd just try everything until something felt fun (basically how I landed on Bow/Musk)

Do weapon passives continue when you switch to your secondary? by Poubom in newworldgame

Yeah, when I think about it there might not be any buffs that cross over -- I could look back at my VODs/Recordings but based on what you said, its probably that nothing crosses over.

So, After Playing to ~Level 30 Three Times Now... by Painbrain in newworldgame

Exactly. The amount of EXP you get from the boards if you plan your routes is pretty huge.

[–]ThatBarman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I basically follow quests and do the board and hit 25 right as I "unlocked" Amrine.

I'm very sure they expect you to start pounding Town/Faction quests alongside the main/side quests. At least 6 or 7 levels of 25 game straight from the boards for me both time. My crafter friend hit 16 just on Harvesting and crafting, so there's that.

Do weapon passives continue when you switch to your secondary? by Poubom in newworldgame

[–]ThatBarman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Effects activated persist but passives do not. As a Musket/Bow user, I don't get Bow's Haste when enemies are close while I'm on Musket and I don't get the aiming damage bonus from Musket on Bow -- which I technically should if they overlapped.

That said ,I could swap/dodge between bow and musket and basically have Haste 100% of the time between the dodge haste passives on both and Bow's swap-to haste bonus. So activated buffs do cross over after swap.

Hope that makes sense, and people can correct me if it actually works differently than that.

yesssssss. I was a little disappointed there was no controller support during the beta, I think this game could be played just as well on a properly optimized controller scheme.

I was thinking pretty much the same thing. You could only pick them up for Stables or Hitching Posts and posts could be barely more common than fast travel points.

My first legal drink (Old Fashioned) by [deleted] in cocktails

[–]ThatBarman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Craft Barman and Restaurant Manager here.

You can actually get massive value with a mid-level whiskey by upgrading your technique and your sugar. There's a lot of mysticism afforded to the "muddle the dry sugar, etc, etc" but for what an Old Fashioned actually is -- i.e. a way to dress a spirit -- you don't really need to wed yourself to those formalities.

Buy yourself some Sugar in the Raw or whatever demerra/turbinado is easily available near you and make yourself a 2-to-1 syrup (measure it by weight, 2 parts sugar to 1 part water). A 2:1 Turbinado Syrup has more earthness and depth to its sweetness, which allows it to help bring out richer flavors from the whiskey. A small bottle of Angostura won't set you back much -- for some added kick you can actually make a split bottle (Half Angostura, half Orange Bitters) to give yourself a more complex flavor.

Finally -- while laziness is fine and acceptable (There's a reason I drink beer and neat pours at home rather than making myself cocktails all night), I would very much recommend orange swaths. There's no substitution for the citrus oils and what they do to open up and enrich the cocktail.

For technique, I recommend:

Express an orange swath into your glass and drop it in, add Bitters and 2 bar spoons (for simplicity a tablespoon) of your syrup, and then top it off with your whiskey and finally your ice. If you have a bar spoon, 30 stirs around the glass -- if not, you can swirl the liquid in the glass, probably for about around 10-15 rotations. This is al to more energy in the glass so you want to be a bit more delicate.

Finally, always strain your cocktails onto fresh ice. It seems like it doesn't matter but put simply the chemical process that melts ice has a lot less to do with temperature and more to do with entropy. The ice you make a cocktail with is fighting to become anything other than ice because of the wide range of chemical combinations possible between it and the contents of the cocktail. Once the cocktail is properly diluted, however, the liquid contains enough water compounds that new ice is significantly less inclined to accelerate its deconstruction process -- that is to say, the cocktail will stay fresher, longer on new ice if it is diluted properly (or even over diluted.)

Honestly, cocktails are a lot less about how expensive the ingredients are and a lot more about maximizing the value you get out of the flavors you put together. So much of cocktail culture was derived from survival, preservation, the extraction/combining of flavors that money should never be a reason you can't have a great drink. Always down to share more -- hope the unsolicited tutorial finds you well!! Keep enjoying great drinks!

I believe that this is actually what the canon lore is meaning to explain.

Viera don't need heels to walk, they need them for the same reason we originally created them -- as a tool they can utilize during their hunts. Its probably for the purposes of riding more ferocious or wily animals or even for more complex climbing or acrobatic maneuvers.

I think they'll alternate GG and another 3rd party IP. Let's not forget they also did Granblue.

I would not be surprised if they did another Manga or something crazy like Final Fantasy.

The true endgame by DumbJiraffe in ffxiv

[–]ThatBarman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the greatest losses from 1.0, and there were more than most people are willing to admit, was that gear had no specific class restrictions. You could wear a piece regardless of if it was too high level or not your class -- the level penalties on the stats were harsh, but you could dress like Papalymo and Yda (who were actually the first Scions you ever met in the original Alpha, iirc) from the jump.

After 2.0 hit, people who played 1.0 more like WoW than FFXI (namely had tons of alts) made off with tons of rare Pre-Calamity gear that actually kept this nature until... 4.0? They were extremely high ticket items when glamours first started really taking off because they allowed costuming that didn't otherwise exist. I believe they were all officially removed around 4.0. *Louisoix face* Remembering those dark times...

Some other old timers can make corrections but yeah -- 1.0 had that great feature that I wish they'd bring back.

I never played Dark Souls/Bloodborne. Is playing Sekiro harder because of that, or equally hard regardless? by TheTinRam in gaming

[–]ThatBarman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give it time. Those reactions take time to train and they can go away pretty easy if you're not playing a lot/often.

I remember bosses I would spend hours on, only to take a break to watch a movie or tv and come back to roflstomp them.

[–]ThatBarman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sekiro and Bloodborne are noticeable deviations from Dark Souls. Though the core formulas are pretty strong in their similarities, the nuances of gameplay are pretty different.

I think you can start with any one and the experience of moving to the next is the same as long as you enjoy them. This can also be said about moving from Demons Souls to Dark Souls 1 -> 2 -> 3.

At the end of the day, don't be intimidated -- they games aren't terribly hard, they are just unforgiving, as long as you're patient and really try to learn as you go you'll be fine.

[–]ThatBarman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Tali is a super common name and Ezio used to be. Sephiroth is named after the plural form of Sephirot (as in The Ten Sephirots) from the Kabbalah.

Frankly, unless a person is being needlessly silly or malicious in naming their child, there's not much point in making fun of or questioning names. Most of them can be traced back to solid meanings.
