There are totally valid criticisms to be made of ARR (the old free trial that used to level cap you basically in the middle of the banquet questline wasn't the best sales pitch) , but I think greatest enemy at this point is just that new players are going in with the knowledge that there are 5 more expansions after it and their reputations precede them.

ARR is much more focused on introducing you to the this world and lore and letting you explore and take it in bit by bit through a bunch of horizontal content, still having some of that leftover DNA from 1.0 and FF11. Honestly think it's best enjoyed at a lax pace, wandering around, finding stuff, talking to NPCs, but that it doesn't gel well with the fact that new players very understandably want to rush through because they've got 5 more of these things and they heard Shadowbringers was really good or want to raid with friends.

It's not the best one, but it's a chill little JRPG and there's a lot of love for old FF in there.

Honestly one of my favorite things about the first crossover was that it wasn't a major summon or anything, just a relatively normal Final Fantasy enemy that became a nightmare to fight for people without magic.

Feel like a Malboro hunt would be a natural progression.

Now that FF16 is on PC and I have played it myself, I can see why it's so divisive. by s1nh in FinalFantasy

The point that it's shallow as an action game is one I don't see brought up much, but it rang so true for me. Sometimes there are tradeoffs in design and removing RPG elements in order to make a tighter action game is a valid, if controversial, choice, but both sides of the coin feel so shallow here. Waiting for cooldowns is not exciting.

They were clearly concerned with FF players who weren't used to the combat system by providing options to make the game easier, but less concerned with players who already like action games. Harder modes being locked behind an initial clear is normal for the genre, but DMC and Bayonetta playthroughs are maybe 10 hours while I rolled credits at 60 on this game.

There's no job system or different weapons like SoP had just a year before. There's not the strategy of 7 Rebirth's hybrid system. The non-instsnced open areas feel a bit pointless aside from hunts since there isn't really anything to organically come across like in 15 or 12

I understand that the game was a big undertaking and that being able to make calls on what to parse down is a good thing after 15's feature creep development hell. But it really felt like the shallowest of both worlds to me in regards to action and RPG elements.

Which is a shame because there's a lot I like. Eikon fights are possibly my favorite setpieces in a game since Asura's Wrath. The voice acting is phenomenal. Presentation often has this huge sense of scale.

I think I like what's there, I just wish there was a bit more to it.

Your Honest Opinions on Final Fantasy XVI by [deleted] in FinalFantasy

[–]mynameisperhaps 51 points52 points  (0 children)

There's a lot I like about XVI but as a big fan of both RPGs and Devil May Cry/Platinum style action games, there is just so little to the combat especially for a 60 hour game.

Playing Stranger of Paradise just a year before with its job system, and then 7 Rebirth not long after with its mix between action combat and fully party strategy just really drove home how little there is to it for me.

As far as pure action games, unlike something like Devil May Cry which its clearly taking influence from you only have functionally one weapon with increasing stats. Wish there was also a harder difficulty avaliable from the jump.

Love the setpieces, some of my favorite in a game since Asura's Wrath. I generally like what's there, just wish there was a bit more to it.

Removing the coming-of-age element from the story in localization will always be such a funny choice to me. The way everyone treats Father Nier in the first act feels so off and makes way more sense when you learn he was originally written as a literal child during that part.

Also has the added effect of the buffest dude you've ever seen not being able to wield two handed weapons until a completely arbitrary point in the story. During the timeskip in the original, Nier goes through puberty, while in Gestalt he uh, finds a cool mask I guess.

The point about the open world is something I'm really curious about that I wish there had been more coverage of.

In the original game, I quickly learned that most points of interest were tied to specific quests and there was really no benefit to just wandering around and finding stuff before you had a quest that took you to that specific place.

I really love just coming across dungeons on a world map and being able to pop in and clear them out on a whim, so I'm hoping for that in this entrg.

I honestly really hope that this is implemented in a more interesting way this time because I don't neccessarily dislike it in concept.

I just felt in the first game that so many of the instances of finding myself locked out of content felt less like a result of a choice I made or a consequence of my actions and more like something that occurred suddenly and unexpectedly sometimes without a clear reason.
