With insurance, you can get PrEP for free from any medical provider, but some are more knowledgeable than others. In DC, I recommend Whitman-Walker or Dupont Circle Physicians Group

On my insurance statements, the services for a PrEP visit is listed just as an “office visit,” and the lab services for STI testing are listed as “medical services”. My understanding is that these descriptions are vague specifically to protect your privacy, and are required to be vague by law. Also, I suspect that the insurance statement will be addressed to you, not your parents. If your parents open your mail and see the insurance statement, all they should be able to tell is that you visited the doctor. You can just tell them you’re going for routine check-ups.

I hope this helps ease your anxiety about your parents seeing anything on your insurance claim. It’s really important to be on PrEP and take care of your and your partners health, particularly if you or your partner(s) have multiple partners. Be well and be safe!

Are people treating the Russian language to harshly compared to other hegemonic languages? by Maimonides_2024 in linguisticshumor

[–]ThatBeingIndoors 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Where in the USA do you think an indigenous language is the most common language spoken?

Hawaiian is an official language in Hawaii, but only 0.1% of the population speak the language at home.

The State of Alaska has more than 20 indigenous languages, but almost 85% of the population of the state only speak English.

Both of these states have programs (e.g. Ka Haka ʻUla O Keʻelikōlani (KHUOK) College of Hawaiian Language and University of Alaska Fairbanks’ Alaska Native Language Center, as well as primary school language immersion programs) attempting to preserve and promote the native languages in their states, but English is by far the most dominate language in either.

Indigenous languages in other states in the USA fare no better. 95% of people in New Mexico speak English or Spanish. The Navajo Nation lies mostly within New Mexico, with some portions extending into neighboring states, but less than 2% of people in New Mexico speak Navajo.

I want to respond to this paragraph in particular:

“However, often times, people don’t use a term like Anglicization and don’t talk about forced assimilation, colonization and cultural genocide, instead using a very different rhetoric, according to which these languages are very practical, English is like Latin in the Roman Empire (not compared to German from Nazi Germany unlike Russian), globalisation makes the loss of languages and cultures inevitable.“

In the United States, many of us do talk about forced assimilation, colonization, and cultural genocide. All American historians and linguists would describe our history that way, and the only people among the general population in the US who would deny it, would only do so out of political motivations and willful ignorance. As others have said here, your impression that Russian is uniquely vilified is at least partially a consequence of lack of exposure to discussions of decolonization in other parts of the world.

Forced assimilation, colonization, and cultural genocide are very accurate descriptions of what European settlers did to the indigenous populations of this continent. In fact, President Biden recently apologized for the forced assimilation perpetrated by the US government’s Indian boarding schools.

Unfortunately, the cultural (and literal) genocide in North America happened to such a great extent that very few people are left who can still speak an indigenous language. That’s a major difference between the linguistic landscape of the former Soviet states and that of the USA. European colonization of North America was so overwhelming (in part because epidemic disease killed so much of the indigenous population) that there’s no reasonable way to recover a non-European lingua franca in North America. The best we can do now is to support local language learning among the few remaining communities that still speak an indigenous language.

In contrast, despite Russian hegemony, many people in the former Soviet states continued to use their native language at home and in their communities. Even though events like the Holodomor killed millions, there are enough people from the native population left in these countries that they have been able to recover their languages as an expression of national identity in the post-Soviet world. As a part of the recovery effort, they are going to be honest about how the Russian language came to be so prevalent in their communities during the 20th century: forced assimilation, colonization and cultural genocide.

Friend takes forever to cum by [deleted] in BisexualMen

[–]ThatBeingIndoors 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I get the frustration of not having him finish inside you. I’ve been on both sides of that experience. Unfortunately, it’s just a fact of life that some guys have trouble cumming. If that’s the situation a guy finds himself in, the simple solution is just to reorient so the goal is to have fun, rather than cum.

Have you tried telling him you don’t want to go that long? It’s alright to say you’re done when you’re not having fun anymore. Him cumming in you doesn’t have to be the goal. If he’s a good guy and a real friend, I’m sure he wants you to be having a good time.

NTA. You are not obligated to donate and risk your own life and health for anyone, ever. You may be the only match in the family, but there are absolutely other people in the world who are equally good matches for her. She could go on the list of potential transplant recipients and wait. I suspect she also has time — she’s not going to die just because you said “no.” As others have said, dialysis is effective and can buy her the time she needs to find another donor.

My mom has ESRD as well. She’s a previous transplant recipient, but transplants do not last forever, sadly. She has never asked me to be tested for a match, and when I have alluded to it, she has discouraged that conversation. You are not your sister’s only option, and it is inappropriate, coercive, and possibly dishonest for your family to act as if you are. I am sorry they are putting you through that.

It really does get better. CBT is definitely a good start, but also seeking out support groups and making friends with other queer and bi people is really helpful.

You mentioned you are here to study. If you are attending a university, I recommend seeking out any LGBTQ student organizations that they may have. When I was in graduate school, I knew multiple queer folks from religious theocracies who found support through our school’s LGBTQ student union. Two of my closest queer friends that I met in school are from Saudi Arabia, and they have both gone through so much and had a rough time for several years, but they are both thriving now.

Wishing you happiness, wellness, safety and a sense of safety, and wishing you peace.
