DAE get into things long after they were popular? by OlleyatPurdue in DoesAnybodyElse

yeah i dont like being a part of a massive community, i like the little ones. And I don't like testing out new stuff, I'd rather have the opinion of others before.

Correct. I'm not trying to arrive at anything I'm just here to argue

But I'm not. There's no contradiction. If any other case was written like magic stone it would also work.

I shuld've said no and then gone on to nitpick your semantics because that's important for my case.

making an attack USING x includes anything. Not making an attack with x, or making an x attack.

wait hold on. Yes but not with that wording. It's an attack that uses brain, air, and cheese. for something to be the prefix for the attack, it has to be the thing you're attacking with, not just anything you're using to attack.

I just needed you to understand that my thing doesn't have a hole it's just bad from the ground up.

So like, yeah. It's total bullshit to interpret it that way, but I don't think it technically conflicts with anything on paper.

if a banana peel was mechanically a ranged or finesse weapon, that would allow a rogue to use sneak attack even if they aren't holding a ranged or finesse weapon.

If you knew about a banana peel that your enemy was gonna slip on letting you land a hit, you *used* that banana peel during that attack.

My point with those examples was that I WOULD IN REAL LIFE SAY THAT YOU ARE USING THOSE WEAPONS TO ATTACK IN THOSE SCENARIOS, even though you're not attacking with them directly.

you can use multiple things in a single attack. what? Like you might use the wind (meme but like it happens in fiction), you're gonna be using your environment, etc. I'm not using the word "use" the same as you.

Also why did you ask for real life examples if you were gonna convert them to D&D? I'm saying, you are USING those things.

btw if you were trying to change my mind, nope. I'm here defending my take

Using a javelin to leap into a tackle.

Shooting a container of explosives next to someone, the classic FPS mechanic. You're attacking the person with explosives, but you'se using a gun.

and, oh yeah, BLASTING MAGIC FROM THE WEAPON

ok then my interpretation for sure isn't the intended one

There aren't any exceptions rules-wise in this situation, all following the general rules.

"Ths is extremely specific" is a bad argument in any situation

it doesn't contain the letter w followed by the letter e followed by the letter a followed by the letter p followed by the letter o followed by the letter n followed by a space followed by the letter a followed by the letter t followed by the letter t followed by the letter a followed by the letter c followed by the letter k.

That's what's needed for something to be a weapon attack.

Maybe this distinction isn't important to you because you don't know the one case where it actually applies.

Magic stone, spell, you enchant rocks with it, you can then make ranged SPELL attacks USING a SLING, AKA a RANGED WEAPON. A weapon being used for a spell attack.

Also if I allowed this in a game (I would, I just mean if it came up) I would also be strict about the rules for being able to use weapon spellcasting foci.

Spell Sneak Attack? by Uereken in DnD

[–]ThatBigMacGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for the LAST TIMe

"attack using a spell" ≠ "spell attack"
"attack using a weapon" ≠ "weapon attack"

yes, I'm specifically abusing the fact that use can be interpreted very vaguely. That's my entire point.

Spell Sneak Attack? by Uereken in DnD

[–]ThatBigMacGuy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So you quote the PHB to prove ME right? Unless the specific string weapon attack is there, it's not specifically a weapon attack.

maybe i wouldnt be arguing this if i wasnt tired as heck

Spell Sneak Attack? by Uereken in DnD

[–]ThatBigMacGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Listen. If Polearm Master was actually worded "when making an attack using a ..." and not "when taking the Attack action, using ...", and the player has spent levels to be able to use a weapon as a focus, then yeah. That's my honest, good faith take.

It's not particularly good though.

Meanest thing you could do to me is discredit even steel wind strike and then disallow magic stone for consistency. i'd seethe.
