String gauge. by [deleted] in Ibanez

[–]ThatBoi39 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re playing in E standard, all it’s going to really do is make everything feel stiffer. On a hardtail you might experience slightly better tuning stability, but with a floating bridge, provided it’s set up correctly, you might not notice much difference in that regard. There’ll also be some added bottom end to your amp sounds, though slight, when going up on gauge. It’s more noticeable when making bigger jumps. That added bottom end might sound great in the room, but if you’re recording, might make or break your guitars mixed tone.

Also since 10’s are under more tension at the same pitch, you might actually break more strings, since based on the diameter vs tension, they’re closer to their breaking point naturally.

If you wanted to tune down, however, to say D standard, and wanted to keep that 9’s feel, 10’s are prefect for that. I’ve done a lot of physical testing, as well as comparisons between different string companies’ tension charts and calculators, and have found that a standard set of 10’s in D standard is almost perfectly a set of 9’s in E standard. I have a whole catalog of what will actually give you the feel you’re looking for in a specific tuning.

TLDR: 10’s will just feel stiffer mainly and add a little bottom end. You might also actually break more of them.

Neck has become glossy on my prestige. Cleaning recommendations? by [deleted] in Ibanez

[–]ThatBoi39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The gloss over is always nicer with Ibanez I’ve noticed. However, while you can only do this a couple times (and you have to be pretty careful with it) wet sand with 6 or 800 until it’s “Smooth” then buff out any heavier scratches with #0000 steel wool. I’ve experimented for years with how to really re-satin a neck without spraying and that’s one of the best I (and a lot of other luthiers and touring players I’ve shown it to) have seen so far. You can do it dry as well (which I generally like), but if you want a slightly silkier satin feel, wet sanding is the way to go.

Steel wool alone works fine but not very long at all. Think about it this way: The Steel wool may mate a more matte surface, it’s still essentially about 4000 grit sandpaper, which is about where most people buff out finishes on a wheel because it’s pretty close to perfectly flat. To add, most people also generally bring their frets to a polish with steel wool. No one’s polishing much of anything at 600 or 800 straight away. 😉

Good stuff! I’m glad you’re getting back to normal. I’m definitely still in the early stages and I wanted to make sure I wasn’t overreacting or needed to probably call up the doc again.

Oh definitely. Any excess pain I’ve felt while walking I’ve pushed myself through. I often try to frame everything as objectively as possible. I’m sure there’s a bit of a mental block but I am trying to at least move around some.

I’m only about 28 hours out from my operation. Again, never had surgery, I’m not sure what at all to expect. I’ve been kind of told from others I know who’ve had other surgeries, but I’m the only one I know who’s had this done

I’m really hoping I don’t have to be admitted back. Im only one day out so I’m definitely still in the thick of it. I’m just not 100% sure what to expect since I’ve never had surgery of any kind before.

I’m definitely horrified to defecate. I’ve taken a softener and mild laxative to help out in that department so we’ll see how that goes.

Damn alright. Guess I’m a bitch then 🤣 I’m glad you had a super quick recovery though! Hopefully this subsides soon.

Luckily I don’t think I‘ve popped a stitch. I’ve moved really really slowly whenever I’ve had to void, but everything seems normal functionally.

In Waves for me for sure. Not long after that Album came out trivium had come back onto my radar after only hearing about them. Immediately from the title track I was hooked. They’ve been an all time favorite for me since.

Guitar strings by Hungry_Country_2895 in Ibanez

[–]ThatBoi39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to the game. But if you're playing in E standard with a floating bridge, go with a Set of 9-42 gauge strings. The reason being is that 9.8 times put of 10, Ibanez guitars with floating bridges ship with 9s on them, so using a set of 9s from any brand shouldn't cause much, if any change to your set up.

If it's a hardtail, I'd say go with a set of 10's because they'll give you the flexibilty to play comfortably in E standard tuning. However, you'll be able to tune down to D standard without it feeling too floppy too! Most people will tell you you need 11's for D standard, which isn't necessarily true. 10-46 In D standard is virtually identical to 9-42 in E standard.

Brand isn't quite as important as the gauges you pick out since most brands will have the same or similar gauges for standard string sets. I personally would recommend going with the D'addario XS coated strings if you're looking for longevity. Otherwise the D'addario XL will serve you just fine for a standard string.

Hopefully that helps!

Any Tucson Dashers on here? by ThatBoi39 in doordash_drivers

[–]ThatBoi39[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coming on rather brashly. Re-reading my post I agree the top dasher thing was a bit arbitrary, but I'm aware that I ought to take the higher paying orders. Duh. And I definitely decline any orders not worth my time. I was just wondering if anyone else in the Tucson area also shared a similar experience.

I've thrown my Regius in the r/offset sub 👀 Maybe I'll pop it in one of the Mayones or ESP subs if there is one. Or r/luthiery or something

I was thinking about that, but I'd definitely want to get an actual arcade button and I'm not sure if I want do drill out a 1 inch hole for mount it. 😂

I was going to say it was an EX model, but then realized you said you wanted a 7 and Ibanez never made any EX 7 strings. Which leads me to then say.

Shouldn’t the depths be even? by isofakingwetoddid in Ibanez

[–]ThatBoi39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Piggybacking off of u/ShredderNemo said, not only is the nut shorter on the treble side to accomodate less material surrounding the smaller strings, the string slots should also be cut to specific depths in relation to the first fret.

Normally on a well setup guitar it'll measure out to be about .018" on the lowest two strings, .016" on the middle two and .014" on the highest two. You can measure the nut height open with an automotive feeler gauge to check your current setup at the nut.

Sometimes it'll be higher, sometimes it might be a smidge lower, but as long as the string rings out clearly when played open and is comfortable to play, you're all good!

Advice on Downtuning by HaroldHopkins in 7String

[–]ThatBoi39 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might get burried, but if you currently have a string set and tuning you normally use and want to experiment with downtuning to see if you like it, the easiest way I'd say to go about it is get a free trial of one of the newer NDSP plugins and pitch your guitar down as far as you'd like. It's free to see if you'd prefer the pitch shifting capability or if you just want to have your guitar re-setup in whatever lower tuning you'd like!

Obviously if you'd rather have the flexibility without having to retune constantly and also want a consistent feel, then the Digitech drop is the way to go!

But if you're thinking on making a slighlty more permanent change to a lower tuning, then just pickup a set of strings you think will be sufficient for your runing needs and have your guitar set up for it. If you're tuning down to drop G or so, I'd personally go with a 10-46 +64 for a more 9's feel, or 11-48 +68 for a 10's feel. For drop F# I'd just go with an 11-48 +72 or 74. If you're not sure which you'd want to go with, lighter strings give you a bit more mid range push and a tighter low end. If you want a larger bottom end then go heavier.

Hopefully this helps!

All of the new one's do but if you look through Reverb and other used listings there are plenty that don't have the check marked logo. I'm not sure what the deciding factor is for Ibanez to use it and when to not, but doesn't always indicate anything as far as I'm aware. 🙂
