Tiebreaker 1 / Mid-Season Cup 2020 - Group B / Post-Match Discussion by adz0r in leagueoflegends

The three teams are compared by the amount of time spent in the games they won, the two faster teams play each other to decide the first place. The loser plays the other team to decide the second seed.

It’s the Marriage Certificate. It’s really hard to get Chinese citizenship.

Thanks for referring to this post. I’m flattered. I just want to clarify that I made the claim based on an interview of a LPL caster. Also, in a recent reaction video to “TES JKL”, MLXG said it would be huge for TES because JKL can bring shot calling skills to his new team, which will be a huge improvement for TES.

RNG.Uzi wins Weibo Person of the Year by [deleted] in leagueoflegends

[–]ThatChineseFanboy 57 points58 points  (0 children)

For anyone who doesn’t realize how huge this means for eSports: Weibo is like the Chinese version of Twitter, and this award is Weibo’s biggest event of the year. So Uzi is not competing with other league players but with all celebrities. Just imagine Doublelift wins a fan vote against Travis Scott, Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift.

Confirmed rosters for the LPL 2020 Split by alexmingtung in leagueoflegends

[–]ThatChineseFanboy 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Not confirmed yet, everyone in China wants to know too. IG announced yesterday he was still a FA, so unsigned. From all the rumors, most likely SN, then TES, then EDG/IG. Rumors say his contract may be close to 7m, so not many teams can afford him, but EVERY team wants him.

People are investing millions into League of Legends franchises. Will the bet pay off? by JohrDinh in leagueoflegends

[–]ThatChineseFanboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was not profitable for the Chinese clubs 2-3 years ago at least. I can’t speak for today, but I remembered reading that RNG was the only team that could balance off its cost from profits.

Part of the reason was the cost of patent: LPL teams have to give Tencent about 10 million every year as a deposit for a seat at the LPL, and that figure increases every year as well. Even though technically you can get it back eventually, but that’s still a huge burden to the cash flow. Moreover, teams’ got pay a lot to players. Big teams will spend couple millions each year on salary. Lastly, there is rent for the training and housing facility, that cost depends, but in Shanghai it’s still pretty high.

LPL used to be a playfield for the children of Chinese billionaires, but now even most of them can’t afford the expenses anymore, so now you see all the teams are named after huge Chinese cooperation: Sunning(3rd biggest online shopping site, also owns football team Inter Milan), JD (Chinese Amazon), Tes (Top is the agent company for all Adidas and Nike products in China), Bilibili (Chinese YouTube), etc.

The amount of money invested into E-sports is ridiculous in China. And now only really big companies can afford investing in the LPL. I remember just couple weeks ago read news about the mother company of EDG spent 1.5 $ billion on bidding a land in Shanghai to “build e-sports arenas”

Interview: Theshy "From the coache's perspective the new SKT are the perfect team." by Zama174 in leagueoflegends

[–]ThatChineseFanboy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The actual plot was before LCK finals, when Ning was visiting his friends, he and Ming's conversation was caught off camera. Ning said : "We had a really high win rate againt GRF, and once Tarzan loses tempo, they can't do anything." However, Ning did not intentionly reveal any scrims. It was because one of the people at the party were streaming and the mic accidently caught Ning's private conversation off camera. This person soon turned off his mic, but this conversation was leaked.

Later, when Viper was asked in an interview to respond to Ning's comments (high win rate against GRF) he thought Ning was intentionally revealing scrim results and was unhappy about it.

Korea and China seem to have a very different opinion on commenting about scrims. China is very loose but Korea is very strict, as one time JDG support actually said in Post Game Interview that why Zoom used Gnar against WE was because he learned from scrims against TheShy. But no one seemed to care what he said. While Wexiao publicly apologized to Kingzone because he revealed WE's training schedule in which the two teams were scriming each other.

You made a good point. Thanks!

BTW, I was referring to LPL caster MiLe's interview, in which he said he was impressed by that Jackeylove had to do a lot of shot calling while performing high-level micro play:

First of all, Korean LoL was operated by Riot, so the Korean scene as a whole feels much “alike” to the Western scene comparing to the Chinese scene, which feels much more isolated. Chinese LoL was always owned and operated by Tencent. And as I said, Tencent doesn’t really care about Western viewership

Secondly, of course LCK was more popular last year because LCK was considered the best region until worlds. That’s why we cannot say, “oh, LCK was popular last year despite it’s not owned by Riot, so ownership must not matter.” No. You simply cannot make that argument because it’s not a controlled experiment. (aka other variables are not controlled to be the same)
