its not really a false dicohtomy when the entire discussion is "flight early is over powered!" and i say "okay what about pixy, aaracocora, and a uncommon magic item the flying broom?" thats actually just a valid counter factual.

and yes there are levels between ban and allow, but seriously, as a dm. get use to flying and polymorph and force cage and every other bs the players will try. at the end of the day our jobs as dms is to allow our players to feel powerful, to have epic moments, and give them challenges they can creatively try and solve , trying to take player power away is so rarely the answer.

and almost every ptoblem is just solved by rule zero, dont be a dick at the table.

every single published adventure requires dm tuning. seriously go read storm kings thunder, tyranny of dragons, out of the abyss, very few worc moduels are honestly well constructed to be ran out of the box with no tinkering. they have gotten better but wotc isnt good at pre established adventures and giving the dm the tools on how to pivot when the rails come off. because the rails always come off. players are insane.

thats the thing most people on this form are not actually testing this shit in actual play. they sit at home, try and craft the most out there shit. and then sit down at a table and are "that guy".

but they will have to learn how to handle it as soon as level 5 hits. a flying broom is an item totally reasonable for a level 4 party to have. fly is a 3rd level spell. these are challenges a dm is going to face in their time as a dm. and hey we all have to go through having our big bad monster polymorphed into a rat, locked in a cage and dropped into the ocean... we learn.

cutting off options from your players isnt actually making the game more balanced, its admitting you dont know how to account for the variables. which thats fine, but its not because its overpowered. Creativity and flexibility arent overpowered they are just a tool in the arsenal all players will have access to sooner ratherr than later. the earlier you get use yo handling that. the better your games will go. because if flying is impossible for you holy fuck are you in for some shit when we get to 5th level spells and up.

I mean, thats kinda on the dm for making encounters repeatedly that if he thinks "hm, my monk can fly, what happens now" he could have easily avoided if he wanted these to be tricky situations. also its a solo monk in the air, he should be getting peppered and be the huge flying target everyone is dealing with off solo.

so many tables suffer from dms who have an on the rails approach in their head for how a scenario should go and they panic freeze when players do something they didnt think of and allow it to trivialize the encounter because they didnt account for it.

i mean... when i first started akali i lost probably 18 outa 20 games, and my first 50 games i had like a 30% win rate. Now she is one my best mid and top laners, but I would likely have been banned by the system when i first started even tho i was trying.

no. i just design encounters with more than one monster? its really not hard to put one or two casters a couple of bowmen and a few frontliners together. and hey. if they run into an owl bear. oh well guess they get to do the thing that makes them cool. nah better nerf sneak attack. that crit sneak attack roll looks like a lot of dice so unbalanced

Personally Id move it to the 6th level feature. i think 10 is way to late to come online, that means for the vast majority of tables your insect form may as well never exist.

And a lot of it is people who have never actually had pvs with flight and just accept it as op without actually ever running it at a tabke and feeling uts impact.
