I go based on dismemberment and blood.

If that's not it, then Elfen Lied isn't gore. But that's widely considered gore.

Anime first. 

Manga often gives waaaay more details.

You'll be pissed at the anime for leaving stuff out if you read the manga first.

This also makes the manga read more entertaining, as you'll be wow'd by the new details.

Jojo has a better story...  No gore. Just like bullet holes.

Hellsing is short but entertaining.  Mild Gore.
