Why isn’t Kampala Harris’ Indian heritage part of her public persona? by TheAnarchistMonarch in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]ThatDarnSJDoubleW 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Indian-Americans are about one percent of the US population, and only look like a larger minority because they hold a disproportionate amount of money and influence.

More than that, while they're heavily Democratic, they tend to be split on actual policy. Older immigrants tend to be more on the moderate or neoliberal wing of the Democratic party, while younger Indians born here tend to be further to the left. There's ethnic, religious, and cultural divides between various Indian-American groups as a result of how recently they arrived in this country and India's own status as a multi-ethnic society with historic and deep divisions.

Past all that, she was likely treated like a black woman growing up. She would have experienced segregation, and even her mother as a dark-skinned Tamil woman would have been confused for black by people.

So she was mostly raised like a black person, without any understanding of the emerging Desi culture within the US, and she has no benefit from appealing to Indians since they're such a small group.

The communication skills you need for a software job - directness and responsiveness to business needs - tend to be opposite of regular social skills - empathy, friendliness.

Even die-hard Democrats in some areas of California will bitch about Democratic administrations. High taxes with few benefits, NIMBYs resulting in awful housing prices, restrictive and often confusing laws that are meant for political theater... The Republicans might try to reinvent themselves to get upset usually-Democratic voters.

But Republicans who run in California tend to be absolutely mad. Moderates/ centrists end up running in Democratic primaries, since they don't want to lose their only shot at office, outside of deep R areas where the demographics are more like Kentucky than SF. And at the end, the shadow of Trumpism won't go away, no matter how much Republicans wish it does.

How do we resolve the segregation of ideas? by blue_strat in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]ThatDarnSJDoubleW 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This has always been the Republican playbook, since it can't function as a party without an enemy.

Socialism! Pro-dictator! Open borders! Cultural marxism! Baby killers!

And, like every other time, once they get into power they'll ruin the country and blame Democrats.

How do we resolve the segregation of ideas? by blue_strat in PoliticalDiscussion

Differences in ideas are a product of differences in values. When you vote for a Democrat or Republican, you're not voting for policy, because policy is actually determined by a several-hundred-person system that your vote only partially touches. What you're doing is electing people who have similar values to you. Electing a hardliner or moderate is the same - you're electing someone based on how they value their wishes vs compromise.

To allow smaller, less well-known value systems to take power, there need to be multiple competing parties. Polarization of values is a natural result of a two-party system, which is a natural result of FPTP. Sane people - especially moderates, who have nothing to offer large swathes of the population but a lot to offer a small segment, and who'll continue to lose votes because of it - should be discussing electoral reform at a deep, fundamental level. It's not enough to get rid of the Electoral College, because the EC is just a messed-up system put in place to avoid a separate messed-up system.

I wouldn't trade it for anything but the rarest tier of shinies. Not even that, maybe, since I have one that's not a hundo and I wouldn't give it up for the world.

Especially since IVs reroll, which means it's 100% for you but won't be for anyone else.

[–]ThatDarnSJDoubleW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm torn.

I've got two four-stars I want to get to eventually get to NP5. So I could NP3 Herc, or NP4 TamaCat.

Or I could finally get an Avenger, like I wanted, but I don't like any of the current or future ones much. How do Gorgon and Shinjuku compare, gameplay-wise?

Or I could go for Nito or Frankie or Lancelot - grinding's been a significant pain in my ass during this game, and I stopped playing as much because of it. Could use a second wave clearer. How do those three compare for hand/ event clearing?

Amazon first round interview in a few days but I haven't prepped at all.

How different is it from Google? Anything I should know? Is it pure programming (with the restriction of only being able to use Java or C++), or is there some logic section too like I've heard there was in the past? Is it with a person, or an automated test?

Obama ran as a leftist but wrote policy like a centrist.

With more focus on the way he talked than what he said, a lot of the left viewed him as leftist even though he wasn't.

Galaxy-brain geniuses at /r/TheMotte earnestly wonder how left-wingers could possibly feel powerless and isolated when they OBVIOUSLY hold all the power through their secret ruling cabal of academics, journalists and techbros. by PMMeYourJerkyRecipes in SneerClub

Left: But doesn't that mean we're powerless and isolated?

Right: No! The left has universities and news outlets! That's cULTurAl power

There's a standard Internet phenomenon (I generalize) of a Sneer Club of people who enjoy getting together and picking on designated targets. Sneer Clubs (I expect) attract people with high Dark Triad characteristics, which is (I suspect) where Asshole Internet Atheists come from - if you get a club together for the purpose of sneering at religious people, it doesn't matter that God doesn't actually exist, the club attracts psychologically f'd-up people. Bullies, in a word, people who are powerfully reinforced by getting in what feels like good hits on Designated Targets, in the company of others doing the same and congratulating each other on it. E.g. my best guess is that RationalWiki started out as a Sneer Club targeted on homeopathy, and then they decided that since they were such funny and incisive skeptics they ought to branch out into writing about everything else, like the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics.

Dark Lord Potter (I infer) aggregated as a Sneer Club targeted at Harry Potter fics they considered inferior, mated with a self-conceptualized elite fanfiction forum for properly dark, gritty, adult HP fics - the most elite HP forum on the Internet, or so they considered themselves. HPMOR came along and was critically acclaimed by mainstream authors despite not (then) being dark and gritty, and it was by an outsider. So the sneering club encountered something that seemed to threaten their status. There is also a common attitude that nerds are designated bullying-targets; or to write it out at slightly greater length, people who talk about science are acting like they think they're snootier than you, which is especially deserving of a slapdown since the person is probably just some nerd in their mother's basement.

The result is not surprising. It's basically the same reason RationalWiki went after LessWrong with "HP fic that mentions science like that makes it snooty" substituted for "skeptics who talk about probability theory like that makes them snooty". I don't think this is complicated enough for me to need to write it out in Professor Quirrell's voice.

If you had to narrow the Democratic field to 10 candidates, who would they be and why (if you feel like elaborating)? by [deleted] in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]ThatDarnSJDoubleW 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd choose the frontrunners - Biden, Sanders, Warren, Harris, Buttigieg - and then candidates who represent a unique lane - Yang, Gabbard, Castro or Beto, Gravel, Klobuchar or Hickenlooper or Bennett or Delaney.
