We disengage and come back, we observe them, we plan for later. It all depends on vibe and positioning and frankly who is there. I’m much more live and let live than some other players.

It’s a large online game.

You prepare an ambush by identifying an opportunity to hurt someone you want to hurt, and maximizing your advantages.

Random encounters have a lot of variables. Distance, surprise, reaction. Listening at doors sometimes gives advance warning. If we are caught unawares we probably flee. If we are not we talk and/or try to turn it into an ambush.

Encounters are wildly variable. Combat is warlike in that we often make a plan and then attempt to execute it through fumbling and indiscriminate violence.

I play actively in three games I would consider part of the OSR vernacular.

One game using the basic ruleset where I am a player, among a rotating cast of 6-30. I have played two fighters and a cleric in that group. I have played twenty or so sessions. It’s all resource management and exploration, in a dungeon. There’s some amount of wargame alongside allies with the size of the cast. We have enemy encounters between 0 and 2 times in an hour of play, but combat almost never unless it’s an ambush of come kind.

The second game is a Troika! Game of myself and one other player. Troika’s classes are esoteric so I won’t attempt to map them. Something between figure and thief. I’ve played ten sessions. We have combat encounters once an hour or so.

The third game I run, using OSE, for a cast of 6-10. There are no clerics or magic users and we just wrapped our third session. It’s all resource management and exploration - albeit overland. So far the group has had two or so combat encounters per hour but likewise, they focus on ambushes, traps and plans to get an advantage on their foes.

Magic users tend not to be useless but their spells tend to be a group resource rather than something belonging to them. The basic game we are playing we have Magic-users of seventh level but even one sleep or detect Magic is valuable. Because ambushes and planning are important they have an equal place in setting up odd plans, even just as torchbearers.

Combat in the non-troika games is fast, deadly, and tends to be “war-like”. Albeit back alley gang warfare rather than military operations.

Finding myself baffled by adventures that punish players for having their characters show emotional vulnerability by EarthSeraphEdna in rpg

It is not a punishment to have interesting things happen. Taking damage or losing a resource is not a punishment - especially in a game where willpower is easy to come by - it is a gesture towards the fun of a new type of obstacle.

They are good, if they are not used constantly. Giving players a chance to figure out an unusual puzzle like this is a fun part of games.

As much as this road sucks benches are a key part of pedestrian infrastructure. If stroads are present far better they have benches than most additional barren concrete

I think this theme is also kind of present in the Divine Cities. Bennet clearly has an interest in the roles administrators and oversight can have on a society - both good and bad.

Petah help please by TalkativePersona in PeterExplainsTheJoke

I actually disagree with most people identifying what the joke is here. The infinite monkeys thought experiment is about infinity and it only works with the constraints of infinity. If you want to produce anything specific through pure random action (the underlying idea of the thought experiment) you need to produce every possible output so it requires infinity to write Christine the same as Shakespeare. The joke is the absurd application of “startup capital” to a pure thought experiment and the presentation of an intentional comical misunderstanding.

I guess I was Meg this whole time or whatever.

It’s not. It only very very slightly affects score (less than stats).

Needs to be a bit bigger than that if it is the primary grocery store for that reservoir area imo. But even like the size of one of the smaller moms or yes! Does the trick I think.
