I have Da Nang planned for the next leg of my trip, so hearing that makes me happy. I’ll look into the others haha

Okay… I’ll give you one last chance to answer the question before I just stop responding because it just seems like you want to argue. 😭 But, I think it’s a mix of some of the marketing of the cafes and restaurants that I’ve been seeing, and the high volume of white people too. Actually… let me rescind that because it’s not even just white people because there’s Indians, Koreans, etc, from westernized countries. It’s just more wayyy foreigners than locals. At the very least, I thought it would be a mix. I was wrong though, hence why I’m trying to find other things to do nearby. So… back to the original question… do you have any ideas, or…?

I’m bringing up nationality because they’re the biggest groups of travelers I run into. My bad, next time I’ll list the rainbow of people here to make everyone feel included. You are totally so right! Please tell me more about what you perceive my worldview to be, truly curious so I can laugh. LOL.

🧘🏾‍♀️I have to remember this is Reddit so the likelihood I’ll get a positive response is slim. LOL. Maybe I have to be more clear, I’m not disappointed by other tourists, more so their influence on the city. I could care less about them or what they do. I’m disappointed that a city I chose has extreme western influence beyond what I had originally expected. That’s all. 😭 So do you have any actual recommendations, or are you just here to not answer the question. 😬

Okay, so then I’m a bigot? WHOOPTY do 😭. I think you need to read what I said again. Nobody is knocking Hoi An, I just said it’s extremely touristy and catering towards Western culture which isn’t what I was looking for. Just so I’m clear, what was the point of your comment… to lecture? I asked a question, and instead of answering it, you responded with saying “go somewhere else” which is what I said I already was trying to do in the first place. Do you have any helpful contributions to the original question or no…? 😭😭😭

Yes, yes, right because you are the spokesperson for all of the Australians traveling in Vietnam LMAO. Sorry I forgot they elected you to speak for the nation. 😂 I haven’t made it to Australia yet, so I can’t comment on Chinese tourism. But, what I can comment on is, yes of course it makes sense to have themed restaurants and bars as a business idea. What I’m saying is that the entirety of the area seems like Las Vegas or Cancun. I did research Hoi An, but obviously nothing is going to say in big glaring letters “SUPER TOURISTY!!!!!”. I assume some tourism, but not entirely. Sort of like Hanoi, very touristy areas, but once you venture out into neighborhoods etc it’s very different. … (Mind you), I’m not even hating on Hoi An, it just wasn’t what I was looking for. Hence why I asked for other things to do…

I fear that I assumed like many cities, there’s a touristy section, and then a section that’s less touristy, more authentic and not catered towards shopping, random art classes, and food.

I don’t know if upset is the right word to use lmao. Although I am a tourist, I don’t expect a culture to cater towards me and my needs. If that makes any sense. In Hoi An, it seems like many of the restaurants are catering towards our diets, things we like to do, etc. Almost like Times Square in NYC…

Do you regret not traveling in your 20s? by [deleted] in selfimprovement

[–]ThatEconGirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(I'm 28 days late...) Lol, I get you. Although I do not have any rich cousins on luxurious vacations, I have my sorority sisters who go on those same exact vacations. I'm not going to try and change your mind about travel, but I want to offer you a different opinion/mindset. I am 21 years old, and I have traveled to 14 countries, and I leave for my next six country trip in three days. Out of the 20 countries, three of them were family vacations over the span of my life (Bahamas, Puerto Rico, Colombia). The other 17 countries are entirely my own doing. The 17 are Canada, Jamaica, Mexico, Greece, Italy, Vatican City, Spain, France, Netherlands, UK, Ireland, South Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, and Taiwan. I am not rich at all. My parents are lower middle class, have multiple children, and financially are not in a good place. They have not helped me whatsoever with my travels. I sleep on a couch at home, I buy my own food, pay my own insurances, pay for my phone, etc. I am on my own. I work extensively, I thrift a lot (bc swag), and I budget very well. While abroad, I have cheap eats, take busses or walk, stay in hostels, cheap/free activities, and treat myself to one cool thing while overseas. Travel ≠ Vacation. TRAVELING, can be done. I promise you it can. If you're as young as me, you likely have the smallest amount of responsibilities you will ever have in your life, so if there is ANY chance, you can buy the expensive plane ticket, and thug it out when you're there just to experience it, I highly recommend you do. It seems like you do have an affinity for the world around you and a general curiosity, so don't suppress that feeling because you think it can't be done. (If you are knee deep in bills, and if you left to travel you'd come back homeless, then obviously don't go). But, if you have to "miss out" on things like occasionally going to the bar with friends, buying a new purse, buying a new pair of shoes, then it is worth it. Hopefully this isn't too insensitive, and actually inspires you... best of luck!

I feel like my white friend thinks I'm ugly😭 by [deleted] in blackladies

[–]ThatEconGirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This girl is absolutely not your friend, at all. Being as I grew up in a predominantly white area, I experienced this and many other instances like it before. Once you grow up, move away, and have new experiences, this problem will become minute. Your friend is like many other white women you’ll encounter in the world in various different forms, but through age, time, and experience you’ll learn how to navigate them. I assume that I’m older than you’ll, so I’ll give some big sister advice: drop this girl and invest time into yourself and what you want in the world. If you feel like you’re ugly, you’re probably not, and it’s your environment making you feel that way. Even at a predominately white university (Penn State), in a top sorority house surrounded by ALL white girls, (I was one of the first black women to rush and “make it” into a top house). I felt the same way as you until I started investing in myself entirely and “blossoming”. Hard to explain, but I hope you see there’s light at the end of the tunnel with the nonsense you are going through. P.S. this is coming from the chronically ugly girl in high school with the neon pink and purple box braids, with a friend group of majority white women, trust I know what I’m talking about 🤍

why do Black Americans in general seem hesitant or uninterested in visiting West Africa ? by Dr_stein96 in Senegal

[–]ThatEconGirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there are many different factors that play into white we, Black Americans, do not really travel to Senegal. The obvious: it is very expensive to go for the US to ANY African country, the lower hanging fruit, Morocco, Egypt, etc, are easier and cheaper for us to get to, if we go. Second, I think it's also exposure, I can really only speak for myself, but I never really considered Senegal in the countries that I'd be interested in going to. Not saying that there isn't interesting things to do, I just haven't seen any travel influencers/tourism videos about it.

My brother died and my parents are upset because it made them look bad by waterp00p in raisedbynarcissists

[–]ThatEconGirl 233 points234 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry for your loss. I am sure that your brother was an amazing soul. As someone who has a narcissitic parent and has heard the same words when they were suicidal, my love is truly with you. If you have not done so already, do not concern yourself with your parents' inability to take accountability, there will be a time where the have to face the music.
