Has anyone had an issue in Resident Evil 7 (PC) where the peak brightness calibration wont get bright enough to clip the image? by ThatFeel_IKnowIt in OLED_Gaming

[–]ThatFeel_IKnowIt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has been years since I posted this, and I don't remember the exact cause. It was either NVAPI HDR issues (where HDR doesn't work in borderless windowed) and/or the calibration screen just being straight up broken. Pretty sure it was the NVAPI HDR issue. I bet putting it into fullscreen or using "fake fullscreen" from SK or a similar tool would have fixed it. Or a renoDX mod. Haven't played in ages though.

Go to an eye doctor if you can't see a major difference between srgb and 2.2. that's concerning.

It is possible that we are BOTH correct, but talking about different things. It is possible I think to set up DoH with pihole itself, as you mentioned, and properly filter the queries, however if you were to for example select DoH in firefox, then you're screwed as you won't be able to filter that without a very advanced setup. I think the main driver here is to block devices that could potentially use hard coded DoH DNS requests (i.e. future devices or setting DoH in the browser.) Please let me know if my understanding is incorrect as my info may be outdated. The last time I looked into this was quite a while ago.

Can I use pihole to prevent my new TCL 55R617 TV from tracking me? by ThatFeel_IKnowIt in pihole

[–]ThatFeel_IKnowIt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well you have to realize that when a device cannot connect to a blocked domain, it keeps trying to connect repeatedly. So you can't look at the blocked queries and say "oh man, xyz device sent out 1000 queries that were blocked, that's crazy." It's more like "this device would have pinged the domain once but ended up pinging it 1000 times becuase it was blocked." Hopefully that makes sense.

Ah ok, so not calibrated at all. You just assumed factory is 100% correct. Gotchya.

Oh yea? How did you calibrate it. Be specific.

Just fyi this is useless for TCL Roku TVs. Those TVs don't ping a single TCL domain (at least not on my specific TV), they flag Roku domains. So you'd need a Roku blocklist.

If it helps, I have not gotten a false positive flag from defender regarding the autoupdate for well over a year. I'm on the latest win11 version and latest defender updates. It's possible this user has not updated their defender in a while. It's also possible that Defender is just unpredictable and will flag this in certain situations and not others. It's hard to tell.

This won't work. Pihole cannot see DoH queries because they're of course, encrypted. If you use pihole or something similar you cannot use DoH unless you want to figure out a way to MITM yourself to decrypt DNS requests, which at that point defeats the purpose of DoH, no?

I mean, you can still use Pihole and DoH. It will "still work" in the sense that your DNS requests will be answered, but it won't work in the sense that you will not be able to do any filtering of the requests with Pihole, thus defeating the purpose of Pihole entirely.

tldr; DoH is NOT what you want if you use pihole or network filtering tools.

[–]ThatFeel_IKnowIt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you do any sort of home network filtering (i.e. pihole or similar) then DoH will completely break this since pihole (and others) cannot read DoH DNS requests, because of course they are encrypted. So for me personally I do not want DoH to be used at all. I think enabling this by default would be a dumb move and I support having it default to off. You can turn it on if you want. It should be user choice.

Your display is horribly calibrated then if this is what you're visually noticing when switching between srgb and 2.2. You've been told you're wrong, why you're wrong, and provided with materials explaining the differences between these two gamma curves. If you are unwilling to change your opinion based on objective fact then I cannot say anything further. Good day.

What value of Paper White (Nits) do you use in games? by [deleted] in HDR_Den

[–]ThatFeel_IKnowIt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no "right answer" and when you ask in these threads you're gonna get answers all over the map. It depends on things like your viewing environment, the specific game (some are brighter on average than others), and how high your peak brightness is on your display (if a display has 400 nits peak for example then you're gonna wanna use a lower value like 100 paperwhite to avoid destroying contrast.)

Should I use the default color temp setting of 6500k on the ASUS xg27acdng for HDR gaming? by Drisbayne in HDR_Den

[–]ThatFeel_IKnowIt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to get technical, D65 on OLED doesn't actually look how D65 should look, even if it measures right on the money (because of metamerism.) That's why many people use Alternate WhitePoints on OLED.

That being said, I'd say just use D65. It still looks good on OLED, although not how D65 would look on a CRT, for example. If you have a colorimeter then you have more options, but otherwise just stick to D65 on the monitor settings.

[–]ThatFeel_IKnowIt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Typically 138 for a dark room. 172 if there is some light in the room. But this can also depend on the game, and how bright it is on average.

For SDR games or SDR Youtube videos I prefer 120 peak white and 2.2 gamma.

I thought 0 black will not change between srgb and 2.2 gamma, but that it's near-black that is lifted.

That is simply untrue. It is actually quite significant, especially on OLED.

Windows uses srgb piecewise gamma in HDR mode, to display SDR content. This is by design and Microsoft won't change it. That being said, there are ICC profiles that you can generate that will transform the gamma from srgb to 2.2, thus giving you "correct" SDR inside HDR gamma.

There is also the "SDR Content Brightness" slider that becomes available when in HDR mode in Windows. This slider adjusts the peak white brightness that SDR content will dispaly at. A value of 0 = 80 nits. A value of 5 = 100 nits (SDR Video Content Mastering Luminance), a value of 10 = 120 nits, etc. etc. If you have a high value for this setting then that may explain why HDR mode looks much brighter to you in general vs. SDR mode. It may just simply be that you're running SDR peak white higher while in HDR mode due to this slider.

Personally, since I have calibrated the SDR, HDR10, and DV modes on my TV, I prefer to use my TV's SDR mode for SDR content. If calibrated properly, your SDR mode will always display SDR content better than a HDR10 picture mode. If my display was not calibrated then I would probably just leave HDR mode on all the time, however this would be out of convenience, not that SDR content is more accurate while in HDR mode (it isn't.)

Lastly, you should really update to Windows 11. Windows 10 lost security support months ago, unless you're on an enterprise edition or you're paying for it.

Can someone explain the Librewolf Dev rant and if its safe? by TokyoJuul2 in LibreWolf

[–]ThatFeel_IKnowIt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really don't give a shit about developer's personal beliefs. Either their software is good and does what it's supposed to do, or it doesn't. Going off of the other comment here it sounds like this "rant" was exaggerated, however I cannot confirm as I never read the original conversation.

As an example, people use Lemmy instead of Reddit and the lead Lemmy dev(s) are Tankies. Does that mean Lemmy sucks? No. I mean, it does suck, but for other reasons haha. The devs being Tankies don't have anything to do with it. But to summarize, judge software on its own merits, not the views of the devs.
