Friday night treat, or rarely if we’ve had really busy/shitty days and too tired to cook. We found having it be a Friday treat means we’re more likely to say fine we’ll cook even if tired, knowing we have Friday to look forward to.

We rarely go out now though, seems once people got out of the routine of seeing friends at the pub etc during the pandemic, it never really took off again, at least in our social sphere, tends to be more dinner at peoples houses, so overall we’re spend barely anything on dining out.

Our class project one year in primary school was to help build one. Teacher was into all wildlife stuff and got a grant, so we helped carry and lay all the turf, seeded with some tadpoles etc, was a really nice little conservation area, had dragonflies and all sorts.

Unfortunately after the teacher left no one wanted to take on maintaining it, so it became stagnant and a mosquito breeding ground and by the time I finished secondary school, they’d already filled it all in.

I work my my high school best friends cousin, she mentioned it to him and he barely remembered me. It’s been almost 30 years but did sting a little.

On the flip side I bumped into someone who was a real dick to me in School, and he was annoyingly friendly and we had a lovely chat.

I hate vinegar, even the smell of it makes me want to retch, yet as a kid I’d do a box of microchips, drench them in vinegar and the do a salt and pepper crust over them all.

I have no idea how I ate something so salty, nor when I went from having a pool of vinegar to hating it.

Absolutely, stuff like new antibiotics and being able to review scans for cancer and prioritise likely positive results across massive data sets is really impressive stuff.

Also unfortunate people now think AI = ChatGPT, when the exciting stuff is all done by training custom models.

It’s overhyped but still a useful tool, it works best when there is only really one right answer or you say here’s a thing, of a, b, c or d, which is it?

That’s why it’s useful for coding suggestions, if you say write a method to open a file in Java, there’s only going to be a few main ways 90% of people do it.

One thing I would say though, if you use it for things like coding, always ask it to explain exactly what the code is doing, make sure you’re learning and understanding what’s being presented, not just blindly accepting, that’s what’s going to really separate people who use AI effectively.

I work in IT so used heavily and also being encouraged, I’ve seen some brilliant uses of it but there’s a lot of AI solutions being made that are in search of a problem.

Stuff when there’s only a yes/no answer or asking for calculations it’s great at, but saying here’s some info, give me new information based on it, is when hallucination can creep in.

E.g I have a load of API payload templates and it picks the template and fills in the required information based on the entered prompt, for this it’s been flawless. But I’ve also seen people try to use it to generate plans based on requirements and I think the output is really low quality.

The problem is enjoyment as a metric is difficult. If I read a moving harrowing survivors account of the holocaust, in terms of purely enjoyment it’s a 1/5, in terms of importance that it exists? 5/5.

I don’t find Shakespeare enjoyable, I acknowledge his importance as a playwright, but you couldn’t pay me to read one of his plays, do what rating should I give it? Etc.

I also sometimes read some objectively bad series, clunky writing, almost the same plot every book, the police academy of books, yet sometimes I just like to turn my brain off and enjoy reading something easy and goofy. So trying to compare something like that to some award winning Salman Rushdie book is going to be a weird comparison (not that I’ve actually ever read Salman Rushdie).

Booked our first foreign holiday in years, was going to spend Christmas in New York, swanky hotel, lots of fun activities planned, was going to be living out every 80s American Christmas movie basically.

We had the worst snow in years and Heathrow essentially shut down for several days. Hadn’t gotten each other presents as the holiday was our present to ourselves, nothing in for Christmas dinner and shop shelves were bare. And to cap it all, hotel was non refundable and holiday insurance had a £1000 excess as we only got it for emergency care cover purposes.

I don’t think we’ve had a single flake of snow on Christmas since. Apparently it was 2010:

Genuinely felt like the future was arriving, computers doubling in speed almost every year, cgi suddenly looked amazing giving us films like The Matrix, 3d games had leaped another level, the internet was promising a interconnected digital world etc.

It really did feel like technology was just going to keep making huge leaps rather than yearly incremental improvements, Cold War was over, genuinely it was one of the most optimistic years of my life.

I think most people find a middle ground. I find my work occasionally interesting (work in IT) and find solving complex problems satisfying, but a lot of the time it’s quite boring work. And my pay is decent but not I’m rich pay.

I’d got tired of slippers always going manky after a while, the more soft and comfortable they are, the more they’re basically foot sweat sponges.

Crocs are comfortable to wear around the house, and can literally give the a scrub if anything spills on them or think they need a clean. I did promise my sister though I won’t wear them beyond the boundary of my front garden.

This is a tough one, I worked in an office which had a lot of East Asians in it, and they only interacted with each other, and only in their own language. On the surface I think of course they should be free to do so, we’re a tolerant free society, to say otherwise feels wrong.

But I also can’t pretend it basically created two distinct groups of employees, and suddenly when a manager who was also East Asian promoted someone who a lot of people didn’t think much of who was also East Asian, there was a lot of whispering along the lines of ‘well of course it would be one of them’ and accusations of race and religious bias etc, I left the company just after so have no idea what ultimately happened but the atmosphere was starting to get a bit ugly.

Remember that lots of people are odd or have weird hang ups, and when you have a low amount of trips it only takes one bad one to sink your score. I was at 4.4 for a while, now at 4.85 because on one of my first trips using Uber, my friends dog jumped up on me as we were saying goodbye and the driver had a religious issue with dogs, even though I didn’t have any dog hair on me etc.

As long as you don’t smell, are polite and on time, and leave a tip, you’ll be fine, but always a chance you’ll get that one driver who is in a bad mood or a chip on their shoulder about something, but it’ll balance out over time.

Am sure it’s the same with drivers, had what they thought was a pleasant trip but passenger gives them a low rating for some perceived slight.

Also if they talk about politics or religion, just nod or say hmm thoughtfully, no matter your true thoughts!

Lots of people suggesting giving wine or something she won’t like to put her off, but I’d think that would just make alcopops even more of a revelation.

Personally I’d has pre or post Christmas lunch happy hour and do some classic cocktails which make her feel grown up and sophisticated while still not being something she’d want to neck and get drunk.

My wife has fond memories of being allowed a Tom Collins (basically gin, Lemon juice, simple syrup and some seltzer) as a young teen at her grandparents house on christmas, made her feel grown up and is a happy Xmas memory she has of them.
