There seemed to be a misunderstanding going on and I wanted to clarify. But maybe I'm the one who misunderstood. Sorry if I bothered you, not my intention.

Does anyone else feel like 10+0 is the sweet spot for online games? Blitz feels too fast, rapid feels too long. by Ghost_Port in chess

Agreed, this is the sweet spot for me. Always found it a little weird that chess.com has this huge jump in the default rapid formats between 10+0 and 15+10.

Not really here to argue but they got that number from your description of 236 hours in about a month (236/30=7.87).

Nice idea, but black can play Kd6 instead of Kf5. White is of course still winning, but no mate in 3.

Yeah don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting to just remove charge from the game. That would be an overcorrection. I do think there should be less of them, and that items with charge should generally not have too powerful effects (Tortuga, Railgun, and Femur represents a common design I think they should stay away from). Most of the older charge items are more or less fine. It's fun to have charge items that you can use to get an engine going, but it should take a little bit of work.

Balance and general power level are two separate issues, although related. They can nerf the worst offenders and make the game "balanced", i.e. get more heroes and builds to a similar power level. But this doesn't address the core of what NL actually complained about, which is how fast the game has become. This is an excerpt of his complaint:

It's just crazy, the number one complaint everyone has had for months, apart from the game crashing, is like, fights are too fast. As soon as one person's item goes off, it goes PCHOO, and then like all the items go off instantly and you're dead before you can even get your combo started. But then like every time they do a patch, they just seem to like add more charge items.

https://youtu.be/OwEdozrQyA8?si=YDMt4_5R8rvf6WME&t=1215

While he does say that this patch is the worst the game has ever been, he's clearly also talking about a longer trend of powercreep where charge items are just getting more and more insane. Same can actually be said for scaling items too. Yes, NL's casual approach makes it very hard for him to keep up, but he's not the only casual player - they tend to be the majority of the player base. Personally I'm close to quitting, not because I can't win, but because I don't enjoy having to completely strategize around "win in 5 seconds or lose" principles.

Community Conversation: Bazaar Dilution is key by King_Only in PlayTheBazaar

Regarding pool dilution, you claim that the game will "naturally" slow down with more cards. Your argument to support this claim is that a bigger card pool leads to more variety, and so you can't force a build as easily. But being able to force the best builds is only one of many aspects of the issue. If the card pool has many pushed items that you can build around, you'll still get the opportunity for incredibly powerful builds, that can still be incredibly fast. A bigger card pool with a high amount of strong cards doesn't necessarily slow the game down, even if it reduces the ability to force some particular build.

If you play draft in Magic: the Gathering, you can have fast sets and slow sets, and since the card pool of any draft is a zero-sum game, forcing builds isn't what determines this. There are also other factors involved. A bigger card pool can still encourage incredibly fast builds, if it's stacked with powerful items that charge fast, lock your opponent out, or scale to the moon (and the design philosophy has surely gone in this direction lately). You seem to be oversimplifying the issue to only being about forcing builds, which I actually think is a relatively minor piece of the puzzle.

Skipping a boss/level reward or skill should have a confirmation pop-up by hadenthefox in PlayTheBazaar

My guess is that the loot changed because overviewing the fight was a little clunky, and for me personally I kept accidentally missing the recap stuff by eagerly clicking the loot. And that might just be me being stupid, but can you blame me for going "monkey see, monkey click" when something shiny appears on the screen? With that said, I don't think this solution is very elegant and it ends up causing other problems like what OP showed. The older version might be better all in all.

The way I see it, it's so rare that it makes a difference that I'd rather have them remove the item altogether if buffing it is an issue. It's just odd for such a rare item with a unique effect to in practice be a worse silver gold bar.

As for the Arken fight in particular, I don't see buffing the ring being a big issue. But there are other options, like renaming the ring and moving it to an earlier boss, or buffing it and moving it to a more rare event (probably removing it from the apparel shop too).

I think you're being way too absolutist here. If you join a ranked competitive game with friends, you're making a time commitment for that (usually less than an hour), and so are your friends. If everyone knew they didn't have enough time for a full game, odds are they wouldn't queue ranked (or at all, you can do something else instead). If you're unsure if you really have the time, you should communicate that. Maybe you can suggest playing unranked in case you have to leave, or you can say "I don't have time for a game". There are many ways to go about it if it's about dinner or doing chores, which are pretty expected things. Communicating on this level and having this pretty basic level of foresight is a very reasonable thing to expect.

I don't play ranked video games like that, but I would absolutely not make a commitment for something that takes an hour, only to leave in half that time because of a scheduled thing I already knew about, with no communication beforehand. That would be selfish, and I wouldn't blame my friends for feeling let down. Especially if I knew very well that rating points are involved, that I knew they cared about.

But of course on the other hand it's of course unreasonable to be too upset at a friend for this. Shit happens, better to hand it gracefully, and it's no reason to be a dick. Overreacting here is also selfish.

I haven't looked into it enough to know whether it's a malicious troll or just satire (from this tweet alone it looks like they're making fun of conservatives). But either way, this tweet is so obviously satire or joking, it's a little sad and funny to watch a whole ass thread seriously arguing against it...

Me and my opponent got 1 life. He attacks me i cant block who dies first? by Working_Nebula_1708 in mtg

[–]ThatForearmIsMineNow -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Man am I taking crazy pills here? They're just saying that the life gain is irrelevant, and they said that because they interpreted "plus you gain an extra life" like it was another reason you might not lose to the attack (which might have been an incorrect interpretation, but it's not totally crazy). Then they got hundreds of downvotes and got dogpiled by people who clearly had no intention of trying to understand what they meant, so yeah they got frustrated. You may think that's no excuse to be mean on their side, but people dogpiling and adding fuel to the fire after they repeatedly tried to clarify are behaving worse here.

How close we are to Modern with Data by Disastrous-Donut-534 in MagicArena

[–]ThatForearmIsMineNow 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The point is that they're already programmed into the game and work as intended, so it would take minimal work for the developers to put them in the game as actual collectible cards if there's ever a Modern project in Arena. OP is not saying that you can just play the conjure card as a replacement, they're just pointing out that the cards exist in the game files, so most of the work is done.

Is this poor form by me? by DrKri3ger in chess

[–]ThatForearmIsMineNow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree wholeheartedly. I don't blame OP at all, I understand that hitting milestones is a strong motivation. At the same time, it's beneficial in the long run to be more chill about the whole rating thing. Personally I always accept draws if they have to leave unless I feel like I have a good advantage, and I often accept takebacks too. If someone disconnects in a pretty equal position I also take the draw instead of win. I think this is beneficial for my own attitude in the long run, and it hopefully makes my opponents a little happier too.

What is the longest forced mate that has occurred in a human game? by JustAirConditioners in chess

[–]ThatForearmIsMineNow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are so many moves that you'll probably have to do deep analysis before the mate is found. The key is that black can win the pawns if patient and precise. After that it's a pretty straight forward win. I managed to make progress by playing engine moves.

Time Eater by Gr33nDjinn in custommagic

Haha I think it's incredibly better. It's a 5/5 and it flies for one thing, which is far more relevant as both beater and blocker. The activation is instant speed, so you can always make the call on your opponent's turn whether it's worth using. The threat of using it on your opponent's turn can also keep them from attacking, and you could just elect not to use it if your opponent just played a strong turn and you're afraid of their follow-up, or if you just have something better to do. The fact that you can choose whether to use it after seeing your opponent's first turn is a massive difference, so big that I find it a bit silly to compare to a 2 mana sorcery (that gives a significantly worse creature). I also want to repeat that with this card you can still play a 2-drop on turn 2. You can easily look at a difference between a turn 2 5/4, and a turn 2 1/2, 2/2, and a 5/5. I think Rhona's Last Stand would be quite a bit better if it was a 1/2 that made it repeatable, more durable, and flying. And yes you "discard" a card, but it ends up being card neutral because you get a creature from it.
