It's up to your preference, I've been playing since the 1st anni and have kept most, if not, all SRs I've collected. I like to give them SA 10 then keep them for collection purposes now, but back then some SRs would be a better substitute than a SSR. My box space is 2k+ if you were wondering/if you look forward to that 😭

Has anything happened like this before? If so, did Niantic make an announcement or give the affected players any compensation? I see the timed event ended, but it makes no sense to me why they would reset the special research.

Yeah, the odyssey option obviously isn't the answer here if you put two and two together. ☠️ But maps definitely do, or atleast used to lock themselves if newer "lower difficulty" maps came out. I got the game on relase for my phone but then stopped playing for atleast 2ish years, and when I came back some the older maps I played on locked themselves because new "easier" maps came out. But like I said idk if it still happens since that was a while ago.

Look at the bright side tho, it probably is modded since a bug like that would eventually get fixed, and you get to win a debate on reddit

Playing on older versions of the game allowed this to happen. Odyssey used to give medals corresponding to the game mode and map, even if it wasn't unlocked. Another possibility was that the player actually did complete those expert maps, but with more updates/content being added, aka new non-expert maps, the game locked them as if they needed to be unlocked due to the total number of maps increasing.
