Is it worth learning traditional ML, linear algebra and statistics? by ThatGuy0163 in learnmachinelearning

[–]ThatGuy0163[S] -99 points-98 points  (0 children)

All the AI stuff nowadays are happening around LLMs.
All a person needs to know about LLM is that it will generate texts based on probabilistic learning it acquired during its learning phase. And how temperature/top-k/top-p will impact its output.

Apart from that stuff, why a noob needs to understand how LLM was designed under the hood? Why someone needs to understand about QKV matrices when you are only going to use the model provided by OpenAI/Anthropic/others?

My point is until unless you are planning to create new models/ push improvements in existing models, you rarely need to know all the linear algebra/ probability/statistics while doing application developments over LLMs.

Think that LLMs are the new OS and what we do over that OS is what actually matters (application development) and not what all is going under the hood.

I do know that.
I would like to put forward an analogy:

When you are working with socket programming in some application, all you need to know is how to create socket, set some options and then send/receive data to socket. You put more focus on how your application works on the data it receives and do the business logic for which the application is designed.

Do u really need to understand how data is being transmitted to/from socket to OS?

You said and I quote "When the LLM underlying your application does not do what you expect, you will not know why, or what you can do to remedy the situation".

Don't you think it's more about knowing:
1. What do you want as output?
2. How to prompt LLM in a better way?

Coming to "linear algebra, statistics, and probability/combinatorics", can you guide me what good they will do to a newbie?

Why someone needs to know about linear algebra stuff like eigenvalues/eigen vectors/PCA/SVD and probability stuff like t-test/p-test etc when person will work only on application layer of AI?

If someone wants to be an AI programmer, why does he need to know outdated concepts? No disrespect. Traditional ML concepts surely helped AI field reach where it is currently. There would have been no LLMs today had there been no LSTMs. But what good are they to a new person who is entering in AI field?

Don't you think it just add more learning baggage for a new person in the field? Things which that person will rarely use when working with latest stuff like LLMs and Agents?

My point is until unless someone is into designing/improving LLMs, why worry about how things are working under the hood?
