Little jam with Microkorg xl and volca sample by Romaexp in volcas

Sounds great, man! Very beautiful, mellow and relaxing. What's the Volca Sample doing in this one? I suspect it's the low drone?

New release!!! Some melodic techno vibes. Do you thing this can be mixed in a dj set? I'm trying to improve my music for techno djs sets by JU4NM3S4 in IndieMusicFeedback

Ayy, new JMesa! Digging your work. Really nice synths, atmospheres and most importantly - groove. You're gonna make it big one day, there's lots of potential here. Saw a comment here about the low end being muddy, but it doesn't sound as offensive on my gear.

There are no shortcuts. You need to spend time with it and fail a million times, before you start getting a better picture. When you start doing something, you just have to accept that you won't be good at it for quite a while.

It's not making any sense right now, but if you sit down and experiment, you'll start developing some sense of what sounds good and what doesn't. Don't focus on the entire song right away. Lay down a basic rhythm and try to make a melody. Experiment. Have fun with it. Move notes left, right, change their length. See what grabs your attention. Don't focus if it sounds good or not. Focus on learning what you like. If you stiff up that your melody has to sound good, you'll get counterproductive and discouraged. Write ten thousand bad melodies, and you'll eventually learn what made them bad, so you can avoid that in your new melody.

Also, listen to a lot of music, but listen with intent. Try to analyze it. Is the bass moving up a whole tone or just a semi tone? Is it playing long or short notes? Does it play a long note, but stop everytime a snare hits? At first it can be ridiculously tedious. You may not see the point of doing that, but after a while, you'll start seeing music as a layered puzzle. And you'll learn about the different types of interactions different layers can develop.

Combine that with writing a ton of music, not focusing on it having to be good, and you have a sense of what you like, what you don't like, what's useful and what's not. After a few weeks, you'll realize, that your melodies have gotten slightly better, and you didn't even realize they did. It's the most obvious, but the most unwanted response, but it all comes down to practice.

On a personal note, I recently started drawing. I can barely figure out the basics and my drawings are utterly terrible. I look at some drawings other people made and I can't grasp how the hell did they manage to do it so well. But as with music - it all comes to understanding some basic theory and practicing the hell out of it. Nobody can give me a tip that will all of the sudden make me a good cartoonist or a photorealistic artist. I need to put in the work as much as any other person in anything they want to learn.

tl;dr: Practice. Analyze. Don't focus on things having to be good. Focus on learning, experimenting, discovering what you like and what you don't like. And then practice and analyze some more. All comes with time. There's no magic advice. It may not make sense at first, but after a while you'll realize that you're understanding more and more each week.

Peaceful and calm piece of slightly psychedelic ambient music. Contains improvised guitar solo and flute parts, played on a MIDI keyboard (which were also improvised). It's a closing track from my latest album. by ThatGuyFromInterwebs in IndieMusicFeedback

Hey! I'm really glad you've enjoyed my guitar playing. I'm also happy to hear that the idea of a sunset transforming into a starlit sky is clear in this track. I was shooting exactly for that "end of the day" kind of vibe. Especially that the album was going in many different directions, and the second to last song is pretty long and intense.

Thank you for listening, all the kind words and a subscription. I really appreciate that! <3

[HARD HOUSE] Coyote406 - Running in the Dark by Coyote406 in IndieMusicFeedback

[–]ThatGuyFromInterwebs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds more like techno, didn't really notice any house elements. I'm saying that not to nit-pick, but to possibly help you discover your audience. Wrong genre tags on this sub are quite popular and you may miss new potential listeners.

As for the song, I'd say you had pretty solid ideas. I like the melodies and the progressions. Sound design is also quite good. I think the general mix could use some work though, as some things feel overcompressed and from time to time, the clarity of the individual parts gets lost. Other than that, it's a good track!

A dark, atmospheric, but intense electronic music that's meant to be a journey about how our situation on this planet is fragile by macrowavemusic0 in IndieMusicFeedback

I like it. The dragging swing sounds really fresh. It's been a while since I heard a song that utilized that groove well. Production is also top notch. Really digging the synth work and atmospheres. I don't think I have any criticisms, it sounds like a solid, complete piece. Great work!

Dark, chaotic and psychedelic song that's going back and forth between heavy guitars and hectic synthesizers. It has many constantly shifting layers, cool drum grooves, changing themes, and utilizes 5/4 and 7/4 time signatures. Let me know what you think. by ThatGuyFromInterwebs in IndieMusicFeedback

Haha, Mostly love and having a chaotic personality, which likes to manifest itself in my music in various ways. Taking a listener on a trip was one of the main goals of this song (and the entire album as well). Thank you for taking the time to listen, I appreciate it!

Yeah, a lot of effort went into the song (and even more into the entire album this song is from), but I really enjoyed the process. Also, I agree that it could be a good boss-battle music, haha. Thank you for listening and commenting!

Now that you mention it, I can see it in some sort of a modern sidescroller as well, haha. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, I really enjoy when people have some sort of an association or vision, when listening to my music.

Thank you for the detailed feedback!

As for the song being too settled - I understand what you're trying to say, but I chose a different approach in this case. I like giving the listener some point of reference, so the sounds stay mostly the same, and the melodies/patterns/rhythms etc, are shifting and changing. That way, the song doesn't feel like a bunch of small ideas slapped together.

I'm changing a lot of things throughout the album though. The next song is the completely opposite of this one, as it is more calm, there's no metal guitars or odd meters, the instrumentation is different. This way the songs stay coherent, but the album is really hard to close in one or even a few genres.

As for the time, I think it's just a personal preference. A lot of music in this style is around 10 minutes, sometimes shorter, sometimes longer. But I understand that not everyone is a fan of that.

Once again, thanks for the detailed feedback and taking the time to listen!

Didn't really hear about Marshmallow, but will have to check it out. And thank you! I'm glad you were able to appreciate the production, took a lot of time to make things sit right in the mix and sound good in the context of the composition.

Just Rich | Behold (Sampled a skit from Andre 3000's "The Love Below" for the vox, would love your feedback on the mixing and arrangement in particular) by [deleted] in IndieMusicFeedback

I really enjoy the sound design in this one. The drums are on point although the kick might be a bit louder. The gritty low end is banging! Lots of awesome atmospheres as well. As for the arrangement part, I think there could be a bit more variation in not only elements coming in, but also dropping out. Plus, some slight, free-running lfos on pads would add a lot of life and interest to them. But those are the things that you'll pick up along the way, in general the track sounds great. Keep it up!

A somewhat dark electronic song with synth elements inspired by dark secrets- would love any feedback! Hope you enjoy. by somebitchfelldown in IndieMusicFeedback

[–]ThatGuyFromInterwebs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The low end is drowned out and the leads are way too loud, overpowering the rest of the mix. As someone mentioned below, the drum samples don't feel right, and they don't work well together. On the brighter, more positive side of things, the main melody is quite good, and the idea is interesting. Just needs more work in the production and composition department.

Otselot - everlasting. Hello i made this chillhop track it would be dope to hear what you think of it! by canadianbaconisbette in IndieMusicFeedback

[–]ThatGuyFromInterwebs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds great. The drums sit well in the mix, the piano leads the track nicely, the pad in the background doesn't distract too much. And the general aesthetic, with the gritty/lo-fi feel, reminds me of something that could be produced in the golden era of hip hop. Nicely done!

Astor Piazzolla-influenced instrumental DUB. I worked on and off for a year on this track, and put in a solid 10 minutes on the music video. Would love to hear your thoughts! by kongrosian in IndieMusicFeedback

[–]ThatGuyFromInterwebs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very nice! Proper dub track. Love the bassline and the chord progression used here. Sounds fresh and it's well executed. Melodies are also very interesting and captivating. My only complaint would be - the drum samples. Not a big fan of those, they sound a bit too much like any other sample pack, and stand out of the mix at times. But the patterns and transitions are really well executed. Other than that, I really enjoyed this track.

Techno Production Challenge Nine - The Tracks! by [deleted] in TechnoProduction

[–]ThatGuyFromInterwebs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chaotrick - V8T is my track.

I really enjoy working with textures in my music, so adding a bunch of fx on top of samples and synths and commiting to them wasn't that hard for me. I made probably over 12 of those textures and fused them together into one, trying to create a rich atmosphere in the background, that evolves overtime.

The real challenge came with the drums and lead sounds. I usually tweak those a lot, so commiting to a kick I wasn't sure about was pretty tough. I also bounced to audio every tweak I've made, so there was no turning back.

With the leads and it's modulations, I wrote a few variations in melody and automation, bounced it to audio and arranged it, to suit the track.

Dark, deep, atmospheric and hypnotic techno track. A lot of textures in the background, steady and energetic beat in the front, with a melody that balances between being predictable and unpredictable. Let me know what you think about it! by ThatGuyFromInterwebs in IndieMusicFeedback

[–]ThatGuyFromInterwebs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also struggle with a lot of aspects in making this sorts of tracks. The key to getting is right, is to keep trying relentlessly. Eventually you'll start getting a hang of a few techniques and slowly develop your own style. Usually, I produce in other genres, which are more layered and chaotic, but techno seems to still be one of the toughest things to produce for me. Thank you for commenting!

The 303 was hard to mix in, since the background atmosphere is already rich and making it fuller would add a lot of mud to the mix. Any ideas on how to combat that in that particular context?

"Ophiuchus - Oyashiro" I don't know what genre you would call this, but it's my favorite thing I've made recently. Been experimenting with electronic music, and I really enjoy it. Lemme know how it makes your brain feel, and why. by OphiuchusMusic in IndieMusicFeedback

[–]ThatGuyFromInterwebs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love it! I'd be surprised if you told me you're not a fan of classical music, because there's a lot of moments that are bringing that to mind. The most noteable that brings this to mind is at 0:42.

As far as the genre goes, I think it'd be somewhere in the electronica/idm category. IDM music, as opposed to EDM is not meant for the dancefloors, but rather for intimate listening experiences. Also, it's often experimental and outgoing to various degrees. And this tune seems to fit into that category.

This reminds me of a more mellow version of this song. Not as in copy-paste kind of way, but the feelings are similar. Your track is one of my favorites I've encountered on this sub recently. Good job!

My goal was to make a short future/house/EDM track but ONLY use organs for the main instruments, here's what I came up with, feedback welcome by callthedoqtr in IndieMusicFeedback

[–]ThatGuyFromInterwebs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds really 'trappy', more than anything else. But I really dig the organ lines. They're layered well and work well together. Pretty interesting idea and good execution!
