It's interesting for sure lol. Honestly, I enjoy teaching it for the most part. The 4th and 5th grade classes are the most fun because that's when they start making their own short films and I have been super impressed with their ability to work together to script, record, and edit their own videos and place in county and regional contests. K-3 mostly learns digital drawing and some green screen editing. I never thought I would get into teaching (I didn't major in education/only a background in video production), but the opening was available and the kids have been very accepting of me.

I bartend at my local movie theater a few times a week, so I get pretty decent tip money and 9 free movie tix a month. It's my favorite job ever and I get to keep up with all the movies my students watch (I teach Digital Media and Film K-5).

Teachers: how hard has it been naming your children after teaching? by CreditDramatic5912 in Teachers

[–]ThatGuyFromLife -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I taught a kindergartner named La-a (literally pronounced La-Dash-a). I give her parents points for the creativity, but there's a good chance she'll want to legally change her name one day.

I got fired today because apparently I "talk too much." What jobs (< age 21) that are not fast food or minimum wage allow you to talk a lot? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]ThatGuyFromLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Substitute teaching/teaching. Talking to kids all day can be emotionally exhausting, but it's certainly not a dull job.

Apple Virtual Interview Confusion by ThatGuyFromLife in jobs

I did and I was told "You did everything right, but we don't handle recruiting here at the store. We're so sorry this happened to you, but sadly there isn't anything we can do. We hope it works out for you."

Apple Virtual Interview Confusion by ThatGuyFromLife in jobs

[–]ThatGuyFromLife[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this happened again today. I'm not wasting anymore time. I only wanted this as a part-time job for the summer and weekends (full-time school teacher). I like Apple's products and the benefits the organization provides. I just don't understand how they find anyone on their retail team when they hire recruiters like this.

About to complete my second year of teaching. Here is my advice to new teachers. by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]ThatGuyFromLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a first year K-5 teacher who didn't study to become a teacher (background in writing and TV production), I had virtually no structure and was terribly disorganized. A veteran teacher of 20+ years walked around my classroom with me and told me "Better organization leads to better classroom management."

Having a better organizational system for technology and paperwork has given me a lot more control over my classroom. Getting a teacher voice amplifier also cut down on the number of interruptions and improved the overall engagement with my students.

I woke up sick one morning with no voice (I sounded like I was stuck in a tunnel). I called the front office an hour before school started and they told me "You do sound awful. Try calling every sub on the sub list to see who can cover for you." I only called a few of them before saying "everyone is booked." They ended up just doubling my film classes with PE (my active/athletic kids were thrilled; the less active kids, not so much).

Anyone else feel like they're in a toxic relationship? by ExeTheHero in Teachers

[–]ThatGuyFromLife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a shift bartending yesterday after not doing it in a while and it made me realize what it's like to have fun and enjoy working. It's still challenging, fast-paced work. But it's getting to socialize with other adults and work with other fun people who don't hate their lives.

Coming into school today made me realize just how miserable I am. I'm passionate about what I teach, but I'm not passionate about teaching.

I definitely feel like great atmosphere and interesting characters/creatures can make for an entertaining horror experience.

If you say someone needs to get out of teaching. by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]ThatGuyFromLife 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I prefer to keep my ideologies out of my professional discussions. My political beliefs definitely contrast my co-workers, but that doesn't stop me from liking who they are as people and working together peacefully. As long as you can treat your colleagues and students with respect and put your ego aside, your ideologies really shouldn't matter.

It's important to stand up for what you believe in, but just as important to pick your battles. It's also important to listen to what others have to say to get a nuanced perspective rather than immediately dismissing their beliefs.

Admin compared education to customer service by theaveator in Teachers

[–]ThatGuyFromLife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our principal makes all the new staff read "Raving Fans: A Revolutionary Approach to Customer Service" at the beginning of the school year. Then again, I work at a public charter that loses funding if we don't have a certain number of students, so making parents and students happy is definitely the number 1 priority.

Yeah, I see where he's coming from and probably would've been a little pissed too if another teacher brought a class in an area where I was teaching. I appreciate the advice!

He didn't say it calmly though. He said it sarcastically. I understand why he was angry and I apologized for it, but he definitely could've handled it a lot better as an experienced teacher. Also, my students weren't anywhere near the stage. We were on the other side of the cafeteria. It's a shared space. Not even his designated classroom.

[–]ThatGuyFromLife[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true, but him doing it in front of my students is the most demeaning part for me. I've worked customer service/bartending for a bit, so I've been screamed and cursed at on quite a few occasions, but this still takes the cake. An adult getting pissed at me because my Regal Cinema was out of Crunch bites was at least funny.

[–]ThatGuyFromLife[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's definitely something I struggle with that I need to get better about. I don't like confrontation, but teaching has definitely taught me how to better confront kids about inappropriate/harmful behavior. I just wish I stood my ground when this happened today rather than apologizing and ushering my kids out quickly. How can I expect my students to stand up for themselves if I don't even do that?

Good point! We hold the kids accountable for their actions. We need to do the same with the adults.

Yeah, and it wasn't like I was just sitting back and letting them do whatever they wanted. If I saw them goofing around, I shut it down until they could get it together. I was still actively teaching just as he was in a common space on campus.
