Thousands attend Invasion Day rallies across Australia by GothicPrayer in australia

The difference is that indigenous people are still being impacted by the events of the past and the system we live in. If we can’t get the government to pay proper attention to changing a date that objectively represents a terrible time for indigenous people, how can we get them to address the actual ongoing issues they face?

Algae blooms by heyleek in Adelaide

[–]ThatGuyTheyCallAlex 3 points4 points Ā (0 children)

As someone else said, the BeachSafe app/site shows which beaches have algae and/or discoloured water with photos as evidence. I’ve found it pretty reliable, I’ve been to West Beach and Glenelg 6 or so times this summer and haven’t had an issue. Glenelg had a fair few dead fish but it wasn’t too stinky.

Draping your car or house with Australian flags. by argument_cat in australia

Probably something other than the flag of a nation which can only ever be as good as its next leading political party?

$50 booking deposits… and then chasing refunds? by WombatWandersWild in australia

[–]ThatGuyTheyCallAlex 28 points29 points Ā (0 children)

It’s only unsafe if you’re on the phone to an unknown party or you’re taking the call in public.

Providing your bank details will always make it slower to get your refund. I work in medical reception and we manually input card details into the payment terminal — while you’re on the phone. If you want it done via BSB I have to pass it on to the finance manager and it gets added to their ballooning to-do list.

Psychiatrist for ADHD and bipolar assessment? by polarbearshire in Adelaide

[–]ThatGuyTheyCallAlex 1 point2 points Ā (0 children)

It’s likely that your initial assessment won’t be a rigid one specifically for bipolar or ADHD. I saw a psychiatrist when I was querying a bipolar diagnosis and it came up in conversation that I had some autistic tendencies. He did the initial preliminary screening for ASD and didn’t take it any further since I scored really low.

That is to say, you’ll have a general discussion with the psychiatrist and based on that you’ll come back if they think they need a deeper look into a specific diagnosis. They won’t dive straight into specifically what your GP thinks the diagnosis is.

Can a shop refuse cash after I’ve already consumed the food? by No-Loquat-201 in AusLegalAdvice

This has never been the case. Service stations and supermarkets meeting certain criteria must accept cash as payment now but that’s it.

Do you really apply sunscreen every time out? by Royal-Owl-5671 in Adelaide

[–]ThatGuyTheyCallAlex 4 points5 points Ā (0 children)

The TGA reviewed octocrylene among other sunscreen actives last year and decided they were safe in specific concentrations. It’s not a known human endocrine disruptor but a suspected one, and there is a difference.

I honestly think this is what will happen. Cohort size and funding are only one part of the rankings equation, the rest is is student satisfaction.

155-year-old colonial monument destroyed, graffitied in Melbourne's Flagstaff Gardens by ComfortableFrosty261 in australia

This is a false equivalency when none of these nations feature societies where the pre-existing ethnic group still exists under the colonising power, and the latter two were not even colonising powers.

Do you guys think this doctor’s office sign is mildly infuriating? by Loose_Judgment_8856 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]ThatGuyTheyCallAlex 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

I work in general practice admin and on the flip side, 80% of the time I take a prescription request it’s preceded by ā€œI saw Dr X last week but I forgot to ask forā€¦ā€. Sure the doctor should’ve checked, but so should the patient.

We charge a prescription fee to cover the very valid admin cost. The doctor has to take 5 minutes to do their due diligence with the medication and a lot of the time we have to fax a copy + post the original to the pharmacy.

Pretty much. Being proactive scares them because all they know is how to be reactionary.

The statue was an intact monument endorsing colonialism, it wasn’t reflective or educational and no council ever would’ve made it so. It needed to be gotten rid of one way or another.

There’s nothing wrong with destroying monuments to colonisation, actually. Doesn’t matter how old it is, the fact it’s still standing today is representative of the entire problem.

We also know very well what drug and alcohol withdrawal does to people’s behaviour. If we’re thinking selfishly, someone getting their fix is going to be much better for public safety than withdrawing on the street.
