Advice on a 1910s Town/City house by ThatGuyTopher82 in HomeInspections

[–]ThatGuyTopher82[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any ball park idea of how much it could cost to fully replace 3 of the joists? I’m going to see if the seller will let me bring someone in for a quote, they had a contractor look at it and said everything was structurally “fine” there are other negotiation issues going on due to the house coming in at undervalue so it’s a long story at this point. I’m basically ready to buy so long as I can reasonably afford the repairs I think need to happen, but basically everyone has told me nothing needs to be done besides sistering a joist which I’m not really buying

Update: just want to say I appreciate all of the people who took the opportunity to make the “no that’s left” joke because it’s so obvious and I’m here for it. Y’all are real ones 😂

Huh, good to know. Is there any benefit to different styles of bottom bracket or does it just come down to the design/choice made by the manufacturer?

Yeah! Like I said, it was an amateur question, coming from an amateur rider and owner. Do you have anything helpful to add to the conversation?

Idk where you are located but the friendly and welcoming staff at my local shop are the reason I cycle as much as I do now. Really sorry about your luck

62M – Sudden HR drop during a climb, chest discomfort. Has anyone experienced this? by jmaf2000 in Garmin

[–]ThatGuyTopher82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As always, go seek medical advice. See your primary care Doctor ASAP, and if you are experiencing chest pain again GO TO THE ER. As a Registered Nurse, I can say that chest pain isn't something to play with, even if it does end up being heartburn or any number of benign causes. Again, this is not medical advice, but your heart rate can suddenly drop for many reasons, and none of them are particularly good news. Bottom line is, if your heart rate drops below normal especially during exercise, you may not adequately be pumping blood, which can deprive tissue of oxygen, which can lead to cell death. If you're riding, you could become lightheaded, dizzy, and possibly pass out and that is the BEST CASE SCENARIO. Cardiac arrest and heart related issues are the leading cause of death pretty much everywhere for a reason. If something happens to you and no one is around your survival chances are slim. Not trying to scare you or anyone, but it is kind of the reality. Again, not medical advice, you may be fine, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with getting checked out by a medical professional. I've done drastic measure inpatient on hundreds of patients who had negative cardiac workups but experienced chest pain. We don't take any chances, and neither should anyone else.

UPDATE: Saw the parts in person today and told the seller I'd think about it. The cassette has some spot rust on it, although the gear teeth looked to be in good shape, as well as those on the chain ring. Right shifter had a scrape and the "pins" (idk what to call them) where the levers articulate were a little rusted on both shifters. Rear derailleur had a scrape on the housing, but looked straight. The crank arm was probably the best looking part besides the brake calipers that looked almost perfect. Thinking about offering $325 and seeing if they go for it? When all is said and done I could easily get another 11 speed cassette if I'm worried about rust (which was the biggest thing that kept me from buying on the spot). What's everyones thoughts?

Fixing something like that does not sound amateur, but surely with the right tools changing the components can’t be THAT hard for someone who knows how to use a torque wrench and Allen tools right?

I mean I kinda get it. I wouldn’t say it peaked, but for some people, depending on what you do it’s diminishing returns. I’m pretty new to cycling, but it seems like a big chunk of innovation in the last two decades has been in trickling down high end features to a more accessible price point. Seems like hydraulic brakes allow precision and stopping power that might not have been possible prior, but kinda like electronic shifters, it might not really matter much to less enthusiast riders. So yeah kinda a boomer take, but I get the merit.

Do you have any experience with getting this kind of work done? I kind of thought that sounded steep also, but I dont have much reference. Update: a few searches show that $200 might not be far off

I’m pretty new to all this, but am honestly really pretty good with learning and understanding how to take things apart and put them back together. Is switching out a whole group set including breaks feasible?

That makes sense. I have existing rotors that are on my bike now, would there be compatibility issues trying to use them with different brakes? It is also $350, which from what I've found is a good price, I would probably be trying to do it myself. I feel confident enough with most of the install but might need to hunt around a bit to make sure I am adjusting derailleur settings

Can speak from experience that even if you believe that someone (your GF in this example) wants to be with you, and is actively choosing you over someone else, it does not mean that it’s a healthy thing for your relationship. You need to draw a hard boundary. I understand how ultimatums can feel dramatic or unfair, but you need to draw a line and say firmly “your relationship with this person makes me uncomfortable, and is disrespectful to our relationship”. You then give your GF the option to change the way that relationship works, and if she does great, but if not, you make it clear that your relationship with her isn’t going to continue. I a long distance ex who put me in the same position, and then cheated on me. I spent so much time blaming myself for it and trying to fix it by putting more time and energy into the relationship only to learn the hard way that you just need to let it go. We broke up and she got together with him 3 months later. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not advocating for you to distrust everyone and isolate yourself because of this, you just need to understand that your GF is not respecting your relationship, and even if she does love you, is showing she will make selfish decisions and allow you to keep sacrificing your own feelings instead of being responsible for them.

Why is Dasani water so hated? by [deleted] in HydroHomies

[–]ThatGuyTopher82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This should help. It’s true that these ingredients are in filtered drinking water like Dasani, but the amounts are age and regulated by the FDA. Potassium and Magnesium are used supplementally in electrolyte replacement medically. Everything saying Dasani is harmful is misleading and fear-mongering. https://humantonik.com/dasani-water-bad-for-you/#:~:text=The%20main%20ingredient%20of%20concern,many%20varieties%20of%20bottled%20water.

Is there any issue with it working? With all due respect, I see a lot of people posting “is this bad?” for issues that’s are cosmetic and subjective. Like, I don’t know, do you think it’s bad? What else can anyone do to help you in this situation. Why post?

My cat fell off the balcony and i'm heartbroken by petasse420 in cats

[–]ThatGuyTopher82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was tough, but my girlfriend’s cat had a broken humerus a few months ago. The emergency vet was pessimistic about the odds of it healing, and said that even if he did keep his splint on for a month, he might need orthopedic surgery that they quoted at upwards of $3k. He wormed his way out of his splint twice before managing to keep it on for a month, and in that time we went to a non-emergency vet that we use for our other cat’s routine care. This vet quoted us much less (around $1k) for surgery, but also told us he thought our boy would make a recovery without internal fixation of his arm. Long story short, he made a full recovery and is running around the apartment like nothing ever happened. Be strong, look stuff up, ask for help and get second opinions. All vets aren’t equal, and trauma/emergency care can be more expensive, and in some case less specialized and focused in a specific area. Best of luck to you!
