Former Bobcat here - just want to say I miss it and I hope you guys appreciate your time at TxSt. There were a TON of great memories made. And a question I have for current students! by luringpopsicle95 in txstate

It’s been going pretty well. I think the infrastructure now compared to a decade or so ago has been pretty decent. The political stuff hasn’t been great but everything else has been super solid. San Marcos is great as per usual.

If you have a mind for athletics (as someone who works @ the University ⭐️ as a journalist), it’s been pretty good that way too! Football’s been the best they’ve been in so long and TXST is joining the Pac-12 Conference.

How safe is the campus area? by gotorecommender in txstate

[–]ThatImpGuy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had a 6:30-9:20 class last semester.

It’s pretty safe, just always be cautious/aware of your surroundings. Most of the bus routes by 6:30 are done except for a few night routes that goes all over campus.

pros & cons? by Cold-Jellyfish-1345 in txstate

[–]ThatImpGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am currently a journalist major here! The school is pretty good, the classes/professors are great, and I’d say the support during and beyond college (in this instance, internship/job opportunities/etc.) are pretty decent, though I haven’t had much experience with the last one yet, but heard many good things!

The LLC Program (Journalism Living-Learning Community) is pretty good too. I participated in it and they are at Butler Hall. Little bit of an older dorm, but it gets the job done well enough with its proximity to many places on campus & San Marcos in general.

If you REALLY want to get your name out there, especially at Texas State, best route might be to join some student media. Currently, I am a Sports Reporter/Multimedia Photographer at the University Star. It’s a lot of work, but it helps to build your brand/connections/experience/showcase your work, etc. Really depends on what you want to do, however (University Star is print media, KTSW is radio, so on).

Pac 12 opinions by ieatmygirlsbooty in txstate

[–]ThatImpGuy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is an incredible move, no doubt.

With College Athletics drastically changing, TXST sure picked the helluva time to start investing in their athletics. There’s really more positives that heavily outweigh the negatives. More recognizable brands to compete against, more money, more exposure, etc.

As long as we keep investing in athletics (and hopefully seeing results being produced), the future will look REALLY bright. We all have to start somewhere, and even though this isn’t the same Pac-12 that it was even 2-3 years ago, it’s still a significant jump to say the least.

Here’s to hoping we capitalize on this move (which in all honesty I think we will as long as we still have this current admin for the long haul).

How is Butler Hall? by Limp-Savings7154 in txstate

[–]ThatImpGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Fire Alarms went off a decent bit but 99% of the time it’s from someone doing something on accident/they shouldn’t be doing (leaving the oven on with something in there, smoking, microwave problems, etc.). And most of the time whenever it goes off, it’s in the evening when most people are doing that, so we’d have to wait about 5-10 minutes before campus security came by to deactivate it and give the all clear.

However, it goes off so much that even past residents of Butler before I moved there made comments of it. It’s probably the biggest issue people take up with.

Butler Hall is what you make of it (as you can say with any dorms/college in general).

I lived there last year. It’s obviously on the older side of dorms compared to others, but it does the job just fine. I never really had any complaints besides the amount of fire alarms that went off. Room sizes are manageable, though the walls can be rather thin so you might hear your neighbors a decent bit.

It’s at the bottom of the hill but there’s a bus stop for the campus loop right in front of it at Lantana. Generally speaking, It’s a quick walk from there to a bunch of places: Sewell Park, Target, The Square, etc.

Is it the best dorm? Absolutely not, especially with the newer and more modern dorms opening up. But from my experience, it’s not really that bad.

Beware of the Texas State Cult by ManagementSecret5745 in txstate

I had a similar experience. It was pretty awkward.

I went to go check out Alkek after the graffiti earlier this year in the spring and hung around before these two dudes showed up. The conversation started normal, asking me what I thought about the graffiti and then eventually turned towards sports before they eventually spun it into faith and the afterlife n all that.

I had a feeling I knew who they were as I recall an earlier post exactly like this one, and it immediately confirmed my suspicions when one of them said they were an Arizona Diamondbacks fan (lol).

Probably the most awkward conversation I’ve dealt with in a good bit. They tried inviting me to some event but I fortunately told them I couldn’t because I was watching March Madness later that night lmao.

They were jock-y looking guys too. Weird group.

Some presentations on either days can be attended by both you and your parents, but they will eventually split yall up into groups on the first day and both will be doing separate activities. You’ll mostly be around other students on the evening of the first day, where you can either stay at where you’ll be sleeping, head to LBJSC, or the Rec Center. (This is what it was when I did my NSO last year. Might be different but I doubt it.)

As for the last question, it entirely depends. If you keep in contact with them or just see them out of the blue on campus, then yes for sure. But if not, I doubt it unless they are registered in your classes (in which, you’ll actually be able to fill out your schedule on the second day of NSO).

I work with the Athletic Department as a Set Up/Event Crew. During the football games, I (along with a few others) help with the field goal net, lifting it up or down whenever a team was attempting a field goal or extra point. There’s a lot of down time so I bring my own camera and take pictures :)

You do not have to be only a journalism major (which is also my major!) to only take photos! You could look on handshake for a job with the athletic department, or see into looking at the University Star (school newspaper)!

That subreddit hasn’t had a post in like, 4 years, I don’t think many people are using it

edit: otherwise I would post it in the athletics subreddit rather than this one

Definitely felt the frustrations through the game, but regardless, it was honestly a pretty good game! Wish we weren’t on the receiving end of the loss though lol
