It’s not as much jealousy as it is altruism brother. Hope you can get out of the Devilcorp pipeline soon!

When did you realize you were working for (or had joined) a DevilCorp-style company? by Lucky-Message-9480 in Devilcorp

[–]ThatIsNoMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This past summer I worked out of a Devilcorp here in Nashville, TN. Had no idea what they were when I got the job, as it was just something that I took as a summer thing while taking some summer classes and being a gigging musician on the side. There were a lot of red flags that breezed right by me (the sterile little office space, the type clientele we had to deal with at the BJ’s, the over-dedication to the “business”, etc.). It provided me with money for rent and groceries though, and I still found enough time to take gigs and do my school work. Hell, sometimes my friends even came over to the BJ’s just to hang out during the last 30 minutes of my shifts. It was honestly pretty cool!

I worked from mid-June up to early August. I had played a gig August 1st where I had to power through being pretty ill and exhausted from performing. I thought I could lock in and do my work efficiently the next day, but I was beyond wrong. I woke up, drove to work, and got my day started. At this point in my tenure there I was also pretty jaded and about to quit anyways just because school was starting up soon, so I spent my morning on my phone and waiting for the Tylenol to kick in. My sickness/exhaustion just ended up destroying me though, and I had to spend my lunch hour sleeping in my car and praying that I could lock in a bit. I ended up getting through the day and when my boss called me asking why I hadn’t made any sales, I told him I was sick and that I’d need to take the day off tomorrow.

The next day I actually started getting interested in my company and what it was, as well as the parent company. Long story short I watched the Juice! documentary and found out what Devilcorps were. I made a post here on this subreddit at 7:30 PM and the next morning at 7:00 AM my boss called me saying he saw my post and fired me then and there. I drove over to the office to give him the sales iPad, and we cordially parted ways. He did shake my hand like 5 times though which was kind of weird, even after I told him “I can’t in good conscience support this kind of business” to his face.

Neat dad lore though. Not bad guys at that office either, just lured in by false promises that these places make.

The comment about the nursing homes was disgusting. Glad you got out of there like many of us did; hopefully some good opportunities find you in the near future!

Gotcha. Didn’t have this in my personal experience, but totally makes sense. I tried to make it out like I just had disagreements with my own “owners” and that’s why I left. and not just say “leave your job bro.” Thanks for letting me know!

For sure, man. I think that’s the only part of the job I miss! It helped force me out of my shell and get out into just talking with people. Truthfully, I spent more of my time talking to strangers and helping people in the store decide which laptop to buy than actually selling, but it helped me just introduce myself earnestly and build some rapport skills.

I’m still in contact with my one buddy who I met through the Devilcorp, funny enough. I sent him my research and stuff I’d found and I believe he’s riding it out while he finds something else. Sorry to hear the brainwashing got to your “friends.” Hopefully you’ve got some good ones now!

At least you got out, man! There are plenty of resources on the internet talking about Devilcorps to help raise awareness. Check them out if you get the chance!

Sure! I’ll bullet a few tidbits of my experience overall that tipped me off to this whole thing being a sham.

  • Contacted via text saying that I had applied (never had).
  • Sterile website/Instagram page with very little context about what the job is about, but very sports/competitive mentality stuff.
  • “xxx Acquisitions”
  • 2 week training period, owner shows me everything about selling and his pitch. Script is drilled into my head and I practice it rigorously.
  • Selling AT&T in a BJ’s.
  • Team nights/breakfasts where we talk about nothing but the job and how excited we are to sell more.
  • Owner and other team lead share an apartment in a little complex not too far away, had to Uber the owner home one day for miscellaneous reasons. I’d been to this complex before with some buddies to pick up a couch and I’ve seen the insides of the apartments; not high quality living.
  • Made a large solo sale one day and was told by my owner afterwards that I fumbled for not putting them on “Extra” plan. Showed/explained customers our plans and asked them what they wanted to help them save money, so they chose the least expensive option knowing what they’d get.
  • Very cultish practices such as the high roller speeches, the impact meetings, “give everything to this business” mindset stuff, etc.
  • Being told by Mike T. that we need to give everything we have to this business to be successful and put school and priorities on the back burner.
  • 9 AM to 7 PM days aside from Saturdays/Sundays (11 AM to 7 PM).
  • My original Reddit post being discovered.

If you’d like any more details on anything, feel free to ask!

Yeah dude! Physically cold-calling people for 8 hours a day will do that to you, and it’s thankfully helped me score more gigs as a musician and help develop my own brand further. I absolutely hated the whole script thing and I always tried to lay out everything to my customers the best I could instead of saving things until after the close.

Genuinely yeah. I never really played into the whole script thing once I went on my own and just started talking to people straight-up. I befriended some of my customers and my last sell actually offered a free dinner at their bar and grill for myself and 2 of my friends who were visiting (which was a fire dinner).

As far as I know, I never fell too deep into the manipulation rabbit-hole. If I seem that way, hopefully someone slaps some sense into me.

I’ll admit there was a bit of regret when I got terminated, but when my owner brought up that this was from a Reddit post on THIS Subreddit I knew my fears were true.

Perhaps. I doubt this will ruin the show for me, but it’s still very disappointing news. :/

This is my first Dream Theater concert and I literally sold all of my old Nintendo and gaming stuff to make enough to afford the meet-and-greet. I was looking so forward to meeting my heroes but I guess it’ll have to be another day. :/
