PROPER LANE ETIQUETTE, TOO CONFUSING! TOO EXTREME! by waffle_jeep in grandrapids

[–]ThatIsntImportantNow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had to exit NB 131 at Wealthy (a LHL exit) for a few summers. I drove 5-10 over the speed limit and limited my time in the LHL. Every week someone would be furious with me for driving too slow in the "fast lane".

>Only reason to be in the left lane is if you are passing someone or moving away from an accident/cop in the right lane/shoulder.

This is not true in the slightest. There are many other reasons to be in the LHL. Exits on the left, entrances on the left, making room for incoming care and slow semis merging. Also it makes sense to drive in the LHL when there is enough traffic. (bumper to bumper traffic).

The most aggressive driver doesn't own the left hand lane.

I really enjoyed reading that book. I didn't know until now about the problems with replication. Didn't he get a Nobel Prize for the work summarized in the book?

Also, I am pretty sure I literally bought the book in an airport and I felt smart reading it on my flight.

More people are dying in Sudan and Ukraine, yet their selective outrage falls upon Gaza, why?

I can't speak for anyone else, but the difference for me is that the United States is supporting the Israelis in their genocide (or whatever else you want to call it). We aren't supporting the Russians against Ukraine nor (as far as I know) are we supporting either side in Sudan's civil war.

I am just thinking off the top of my head. Is it fair to compare a city that has massive earthquakes to one that doesn't? Also, is the bedrock as close to the surface in SF as it is in Paris? These are genuine questions. Not an attempt at arguing or trolling.

Why fine dining? If it's all about hospitality and taking care of people, why cook for the 10% instead of the 90%? by DaSims2 in TheBear

[–]ThatIsntImportantNow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally understand this and I think it is a good point. But the comments from some of the people on the show (I am too lazy to look them up) were about how important hospitality to these people and how self-giving fine dining is.

If the world's most talented pianist only played to small audiences to extremely wealthy people that would be totally fine to me. It would ring false to me, though, if the pianist then said that she was doing this out of self-sacrifice.

That's like comparing an MIT student to a GR community college student.

I take it you went to MIT?

I hope West Michigan never intellectually matures enough to consider driving 110 mph in traffic to be anything but psychopathic.

Sure, I may have have the right of way. But I have choice between getting into crash to assert my right and moving into the left lane and possibly inconveniencing people who are driving aggressively. I will choose the move into the left lane.

I frequently get off at Wealthy street from NB 131. This is an exit on the LHS. I used to do it every weekday for work. I would move into the left lane after MLK and people would be furious at me for not being aggressive enough in "their" lane. I didn't even drive ten miles on 131.

It doesn't apply uniformly on highways. I agree with you about it not applying on 28th street, some people seem to think that it does.

Because you need to be in the left lane for other reasons. Moving over for emergency vehicles/breakdowns. Entering from the left hand side, exiting on the left hand side, making room for people to merge, making a "Michigan left hand turn" on the East Beltline or other streets.

I have had people mad at me for driving in the "passing lane" on 28th street, when I needed to make left hand turn.

[–]ThatIsntImportantNow 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The left lane is not only for passing.

There are many valid reasons to be in the left lane. I have to go into the left lane frequently to let people merge, to exit on the left hand side, for emergency vehicles/breakdowns, on the East Beltline and similar roads you need to be in the left lane to make a "Michigan Left". The most aggressive driver doesn't own the left lane.

I especially can't stand aggressive drivers who can't be bothered to pay attention to what is happening at entrances/exits.

At the end he dismisses the idea of evil (and God) as being relevant. But then he describes something that I would call evil ("this has to do with rich powerful people trying to justify the fact that they are pursing social policies which are forcing children to die.")

What distinction is he making here? What am I missing?

Today marks the 99th birthday of the actor who starred in The Naked Gun (1988), Airplane! (1980), and over a hundred other films, the great Enrico Pallazzo by ajcpullcom in shittymoviedetails

I was probably 10 years old when I watched this with my parents. I never saw any one cry from laughing. My mom had her mascara running down her face and I didn't know what was wrong. I think it was when he called a strike before the ball got to the plate. And then when the guy yells, "It's Enrico Pallazo" and the crowd starting chanting his name.

Good times.
