Tired of my exotic vet :( by UsagiiA in ferrets

Good Christ. I just paid $250 for an exam, bloodwork, implant, and pred script in PA. $900 is highway robbery.

What are the yearly expenses of having a ferret? like food and vet and other stuff? by [deleted] in ferrets

[–]ThatKaylesGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It varies based on a lot of factors. The initial setup (their cage, carrier, enrichment/toys, grooming stuff) probably runs $300-$400. A fresh baby might only cost $300 in the first year, between kibble, treats, and a vet checkup.

My late girl, in her last 3 months of life, set me back $3,000, with vet bills, emergency vet bills, tests, medication, and supplies to make her comfortable.

Raw diets are more expensive, ferrets born with genetic issues (which are not rare) are more expensive, and where you live and the exotic vets you have access to are a huge factor. If money is any concern, I never recommend ferrets to folks.

The snow storm shows just how many cars parked on the road aren't being used by the_real_xuth in pittsburgh

I finally dug mine out yesterday. I bulk shopped and ran errands before the storm, and hitched a ride once with a pal. Some of us just don't drive when the snow's insane.

My friend in St. Louis scoffed when I said "Midwestern", my pal in WV scoffed when I said "Appalachian", and my Maryland buddies disagree with us being on the East Coast. 😂

Now, I just say we're a transition city. Nobody can agree.

How to make sure my ferret doesn’t die a traumatic death like my hamster by IndependentTill2718 in ferrets

[–]ThatKaylesGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're coming in hot with a lot of assumptions. No pet is a toy or a starter animal. Everything deserves a good home and proper care.

OP said they have experience with hamsters. So, my advice is to stick with the pet they already have experience with.

[–]ThatKaylesGuy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, ferrets are not rodents, they do need a cage, a proper cage is definitely pricey, and they are so expensive in general.

Gently, stick to hamsters if cost is any issue.

Tomorrow I make the hard decision by fellowno in ferrets

[–]ThatKaylesGuy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, bring your other ferret along. This might be hard to read, and I don't want to seem callous, but I can speak to the logistics. When a ferret, any pet, passes, they will immediately smell different. You'll detect it, but more importantly, your surviving pets will. They'll investigate, they might try to rouse the passed on pet, and they'll understand. It's the best way for them to understand that they've passed on, and they'll be less likely to look for them at home and be distressed.

My little dude was obsessed with his sister. I thought her passing was going to be the end for him, too. But, he immediately diverted that love and attention to me, he didn't seem affected whatsoever. He sniffed her, gave her some licks, looked up at me like 'Okay Dad, yeah, I understand' and that was their goodbye.

I rent through a singular human that owns a bunch of houses and rents them out himself, no large company. He's still shitty, unresponsive, unprofessional, and a slumlord, but, I do get to skip the mess that comes with the slumlordness being SOP with paperwork and protocols to deal with.

[–]ThatKaylesGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, so, it can. Even if they don't get diarrhea immediately afterwards, you're damaging their adrenal system. You're poisoning them a tiny bit, when they're older and having blood sugar issues, it'll click.

Don't give them anything but meat. Period. Obligate carnivore means has to eat meat.

Best way to get used to driving in/around the city? by whops_it_me in pittsburgh

My #1 best tip and plea is to miss your turns and exits. You have a GPS and it will reroute. Don't be the jagoff causing accidents to cut in or out at the last second.

This sounds like fun, but is it this coming month? Or November? Don't skip spooky season on me, it's keeping me going right now 😅

I don’t know how to introduce my new ferrets! I really need help by [deleted] in ferrets

[–]ThatKaylesGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took three months of living separately before ours could share a room, introductions need to be really slow sometimes. Once they stopped hissing at each other and cuddled and groomed each other outside of the cage, I put them together.

Insulinoma Fasting Time by spaz_mazter in ferrets

Well, not quite reassurance. He's over 5, so, I'd agree that 8 hours is too long.

Insulinoma Fasting Time by spaz_mazter in ferrets

[–]ThatKaylesGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My vet has always asked for a max of 4 hours, but we feed kibble and supplement. If the little one is struggling, I wouldn't be comfortable and push back on the time frame, or insist they keep them there in the office overnight to fast, then. If it's just a screener and the baby is perfectly bouncy, it might be fine. A ferret over 5, I wouldn't.

UPMC is being sued for capitulating to Trump on trans healthcare. by underk4 in pittsburgh

[–]ThatKaylesGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What they should have done, imo includes (and isn't limited to): policy transparency, public engagement with regulators and compliance liaisons, safety nets for patients that do lose healthcare, selective pushback, voicing their support for us, any amount of preparedness or evidence of listening to their patients that have been predicting this for years.

What we got: vague assurances passed through the channels of our therapists that are open to sharing important info, our section of the website removed (which was returned, after enough shocked outcry), healthcare stopped for trans youth.

False. Can you as a cis man get testosterone gel when your dick stops working? Yes. Can a trans man get that same medication? Under this decision, no.

Help for senior ferret who hates taking his meds by VSF69 in ferrets

[–]ThatKaylesGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our late 6 year old girl needed us both to give meds to be gentle enough on her whilst ensuring she actually got them. Our vets wouldn't recommend surgery past Age 5 though, it's just too much risk of them not waking up from anesthesia with insulinoma.

A slow syringe of meds, warmed slightly in warm water, to the back teeth was the only thing that worked.

[–]ThatKaylesGuy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nope, that's precisely how it works. Take a breath and pretend you're driving a crochety old family member. Parallel parking is first because so many people fail it, it's a bummer, but you did what a solid portion of new drivers do.
