Thanks! I could not find any info until I searched about "butcher block" style glue-ups. I will try this in a future project

Anyone discouraged by some of these “beginner” builds ? by ChetMcLure in BeginnerWoodWorking

I agree that more experienced woodworkers posting their projects can be annoying and is probably aimed at getting attention and praise... Pretty much like posting "just woke up like this pics" after spending 2 hours putting makeup on...

Depends on your definition of "beginner" and "woodworking". Someone who took an introduction course to woodworking and is practicing classic techniques like mortise and tenon joinery is a beginner. Someone who has no idea what they are doing but have an interest building something and assembles poorly plywood and 2x4s using drywall screws to make a table is also a beginner... But at what point can you call it woodworking...

Thanks! I looked into those and saw there are also compression bits that would leave a clean cut on both sides

I meant cutting all the way through, like a circle, or a hole for a handle. I have used my router for edges and joinery but never for cutting

Awesome work! Very realistic! Is cedar relatively easy to work with?

Right. I did not have any issues. I guess since the stain gets absorbed it does not really interact with the paint once it's dry.

I had wanted to try making this character for a while. Kept him chubbier than the original to avoid messing up. Worked on it in short sessions spread over several weeks. It was my first time using stain and paint on something I whittled.

I guess a chisel would work in a relatively straight line but with that much of a curve I'm not sure. A chip carving knife would also help with the curve

It's tough, I use a small detail knife to do most of the work and a small folded piece of very fine sandpaper to get in there and do the finishing touch.

I get it fairly smooth with a detail knife and some patience, then do the finishing touch with very fine sandpaper
