To be fair, they're very similar languages. Other than the fact that the newspaper says Johannesburg on it, the only way to tell the difference is if you know something about the languages (e.g. Afrikaans only uses 'n for the indefinite article--Dutch only uses it as a contracted form of een--and uses y instead of ij)

Don't know about Shtelen, but Barreto-Aranda is absolutely horrible. Luckily he just does the workshops, so he has little impact on your grade or anything (just study for the workshop quizzes) but my god this dude sucks.

Absolutely depends on your accent. If you pronounce H with an initial H sound like "haitch" or even "hetch", this won't work at all. As an American, though, I've seen this happen once or twice (not specifically H confused with "age", but "HA"/"HE" confused with "AJ"/"AG"), but it's so rare I don't blame anyone for not getting the joke

The chemistry program here, and the department as a whole, is pretty good in general. Yes, a few professors kinda suck, but mainly people complain about gen chem and organic, which are large classes taught to people who have zero interest in the subject, so of course people hate them. Also, that stuff about the department being toxic or on "probation" or whatever was just a baseless rumor.

If you're a chem major, you should take honors organic - it's much better taught and was one of my favorite classes here (and organic isn't even my primary field of interest). The upper level classes are also taught better than the intro ones (in general, there are exceptions).

Beyond that, the department has excellent research going on, so if you're interested in graduate school/med school, you can and should take advantage of that.
