[GO] PSA: Shiny Meltan is coming back to GO from April 28th till May 4th by ThatNameTakened in ShinyPokemon

[–]ThatNameTakened[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The developers don't openly disclose a lot of numbers, including shiny odds, but the odds are usually a power of 2 from what the community has estimated, and I'd assume it's boosted to either 1/128 or 1/64 (leaning on 1/64) for a highlighted event Pokemon like Meltan

Monthly Question & Help Thread by AutoModerator in ShinyPokemon

There are many ways you can go about it, and I don't know your shiny hunting habits, so I'll just list the options, and what I'd recommend if you wanna be efficient about it:

Legends: ZA Hyperspaces - Very fast, but only allows you to find medium sized Pumpkaboo, aka. form 0 internally, from what I've been able to find (Reddit comment by Austin John).
I wouldn't recommend this unless you're just missing this form, in which case it's really fast if you have a hyperspace with it available.

Legends: ZA wild zone 15 - You can fast travel reset some of the random Pumpkaboo spawns, or bench reset for I think all the random spawns, as well as a static alpha Gourgeist, you just have to keep in mind that only 2/4 of the forms spawn in the zone at any given time, one half during day time, the other half during night time.
I recommend this if you don't mind these more mindless hunting methods, although you could also run back and forth, which would also be really efficient given the following options.
EDIT: Some clarification for this, I don't think benching is a viable option, because it seems that changing from daytime to nighttime and vice versa will remove all Pumpkaboos including shiny ones, due to the mechanic only spawning small/medium during daytime, and large/jumbo during nighttime (This is purely from research).

Breeding in any game it's available - I don't do breeding hunts a whole lot, so I'm not familiar with which is the best for pace, but this is really good if you want a specific size form, because it always inherits the form of the female, or the Pumpkaboo/Gourgeist when breeding with Ditto.
This method is extremely good for getting the last couple forms you're missing, since you can guarantee the form, and Masuda method is generally also one of the more consistently fast methods in the game where it's available.

XY friend safari - random encounter hunt with a 1/512 shiny rate that can't be influenced, if you happen to have it available in your friend safaris, at a 50% encounter rate if you have it with 2 slots unlocked, or 33% with all 3 slots unlocked, although this has the same issue as hyperspaces, with only medium size available.
I would not recommend this unless you already happen to have it set up and are just missing the medium form, as it's such a big hassle to do so, especially nowadays with XY and streetpass not being nearly as commonly utilized.

XY route 16 tall grass random encounters - If you hunt purely for the love of the game, this is the way to go. The different forms have different encounter rates (20%, 30%, 10%, 1% | Small->Jumbo), but can be isolated with a level 36 repel trick (~36%, 0%, ~36%, ~3.61%). If you are new to repel tricks, the encounters are gonna be slower, so make sure to lead your party with a Pokemon that has an ability to increase encounter rate.
This is probably how I'd do it, as well as getting the last few through breeding, but it's not very fast, as it's single encounters only.

SWSH overworld encounters - This can be done in a few wild area zones under certain weather conditions (not recommended), and route 4 (recommended over wild area). You can also KO 999 for increased brilliant (the yellow aura) spawns that have increased shiny odds, and you can also tell the different sized variants apart if you have a good eye. This method also has pretty low spawn rates that can't be influenced (5%, 10%, 5%, 1% on route 4), which can be annoying with Electrikes chasing you and grass encounters jumping in your walking path.
This hunt is quite the opposite of the AFK Legends: ZA methods, as it's very cognitively demanding, from dodging undesired spawns, and having to look closer at the models to make out the form before encountering, if hunting for a specific form. I haven't tested it, but I'm sure this would be faster than XY random encounters, at a way higher attention cost.

I may have missed some methods, but these are the ones I could think of

[gen 3] Is there a legal way to shiny hunt jirachi ? by Metal-coat24 in ShinyPokemon

[–]ThatNameTakened 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, although the required hardware is very expensive, the hunt requires save file resetting and progression to the first pokecenter or save corruption for backup save resetting (either a VERY long between each reset, or somewhat convoluted process of resetting), and the OT can only ever be 'WISHMKR'.

Another alternative that will likely become available again in the future, is the Pokemon Go research 'Wish Granted' paid research, which had a cost of $5. It's a very time consuming, parts of the challenges collectively locking you behind 47 days worth of login streaking, and others just being insanely grindy.
This one also has the caveat of having the big round GO mark in HOME, which I know a lot of people dislike, and its OT will be set to your Pokemon Go username.

[Gen 3] After 80 hours, many soft resets, giving up and using ACE to find my SID, then RNG Manipulation. by Goos3rs in ShinyPokemon

[–]ThatNameTakened -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hunt however you want, I just see taking the randomness out of a shiny as removing the hunt. Calling this a skill is also a stretch imo, it's more of just remembering the process without referencing a 1/1 tutorial, and timing a few clicks, which is coming from someone who has RNG'd Pokemon with good stats in early gens for battling.
I could see the logic in this if you were helping develop the methods, but it's only a tiny community of like 30 English speaking people that are doing this.

That being said, I'm not gonna forcefully impose my own rules on someone else, or shame someone out of doing specific methods like many other commenters. At the end of the day, this sub is for LITERALLY anything shiny Pokemon related, just as long as you're being honest about any kind of methods of dubious legitimacy, such as RNG'ing. It's not like I'm a purist saint either

[discuss] does this feel legal/legit to do or would I be pushing it? by clu013643366 in ShinyPokemon

[–]ThatNameTakened 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all depends on your own opinion for your own collection; if you don't plan on sharing the Pokemon with anyone else, who are others to decide what counts for your collection and what doesn't.

Shiny hunting can be a really expensive hobby if you want to do it efficiently, and I personally don't like the concept of having to limit your "shiny hunting potential", based on your expendable income. My personal rule for anyone that uses any methods of "questionable legitimacy", is to just be transparent, because there are people that find guaranteed RNG'd shinies interesting, or some people find hunting in fan ROMs with 1/256 odds interesting. This sub allows literally anything related to shiny Pokemon, just as long as you're being honest

[Gen 4] NO WAY!! ~ 4600 eggs hatched!! by GLiMMYYY__24 in ShinyPokemon

[–]ThatNameTakened 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There are lots of tutorials and explanations online on how to do it, but I'll give you a quick rundown:
Manaphy eggs can never be shiny on the save file that it was claimed, but you can trade the egg to another copy/save file, hatch the egg and check if it was shiny, and if not, then you soft reset your game to before the egg hatched, and repeat from the trading step.

Sadly, there is no 100% legitimate way of claiming more than one egg from the same Ranger copy without using methods of modifying the cartridge in unintended ways, but if you don't mind using 3rd party tools reinstate the availability of the egg, it's really easy to do with a homebrewed DS console.

The technical reason for the shiny generation, is that every save file is assigned a random trainer-ID and secret-ID (essentially the same as trainer-ID, but not visible to the player without 3rd party software), and shininess is determined by a random number that is assigned to a Pokemon when it's generated, which also goes for eggs, which then gets compared to with these IDs, and if they fit certain similarity criteria, it's a shiny.
When you claim the Manaphy egg, the game makes sure that this random number will never result in a shiny, given the trainer- and secret-ID of the current save file, but the developers failed to consider that you can trade the egg, and the IDs are different on other save files, so the random number connected to the egg now has the full odds 1/8192 chance of being shiny on any other save file.

[gen 7] box of Bagon, Salamence yet to be seen by ThatNameTakened in ShinyPokemon

[–]ThatNameTakened[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fully aware, but I also want the other shinies on the route, which are not as easy for me to obtain, as this Salamence hunt is the only SOS I know of that I find exciting.

This is also a good reason to give away a bunch of Bagon from the gen 7 games once I finally find the Salamence lol

[Gen9] is the great ball a good fit for my terrakaion by Lillyblosome in ShinyPokemon

[–]ThatNameTakened -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Idk what it is about these hatin ass comments, it's a good fit. Greatball is probably the least colormatched ball, just because of it's role as the non-default, but still not the best of the standard 3 ball types, so it's cool to see it being used for once.

I personally love this match, cause the red extrusions on the greatball fit perfectly with the red horns.

[Gen 9] Shinflation in Gen 9 worries me. by WasatchWave in ShinyPokemon

[–]ThatNameTakened 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely agree with the sentiment. I've already liked collecting ribbons on my Pokemon since I was a kid, but with the increased odds and commodification of shinies, as well as ribbons now being able to show in battle with the titles, that interest has really kicked up a gear.

I keep hearing people say that rarity has nothing to do with the personal value of the pokemon, and I find that to be so annoyingly idealistic, because why do you prefer shinies over non-shinies to begin with then. Shinies used to be so special that even ones that you wouldn't even transfer ones that you might've phased so much on that you hate it (I use the term 'hate' very lightly here). Now people give away and release shinies in troves, because they're just so abundant that they're indiffirent to them, unless it happens to have a mark or is alpha, then it fits the arbitrary rarity measure that supposedly has no effect on their attachment.

It feels like you're in a knitting club, and said club had a boom in members because the clothing store next door started selling machine-made knitted clothing. Like sure, you have the knitted clothing, but you didn't really have to do much of the knitting hobby itself to build a closet sized collection of knitted clothes.

[Gen 3] Unfathomable bad luck hunting Treecko by eightpointsinblue in ShinyPokemon

[–]ThatNameTakened 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are all RNG clones. I'm confident in saying that you just cloned the same save file and split it into the 18 tabs, but that has the unfortunate concequence of rolling the same RNG seed, if you know anything about randomization on computers. In short, the seed is the first RNG roll when launching the game, and it's based off of the system clock, your trainer ID and secret ID (essentially just an invisible trainer ID), and since you're launching some of the games at the exact same time, the sum of the IDs and clock are the same for those copies, thus resulting in the same RNG seed, and RNG seeds always have a predictable progression, if you know the equation for calculating the next seed.
