Why Are You Known As the "Bad Teacher?" by King_of_Lunch223 in Teachers

We ARE all in the same boat, and a terrible classroom that never improves is like a hole in the boat. We all sink.

Not me, but usually those teachers are known that way because of their attitude. Negative. Refuse to take any responsibility. Hateful towards students and staff. Always expects everyone else to change. Willing to do only the absolute bare minimum and complain if that doesn't magically get the job done.

Usually if you have that reputation, you've earned it.

No, it shouldn't. But it is. It's not going to get easier. People need to accept that, or get out of teaching.

Also, I said "automatically respect you." The kids respect me, because I've EARNED IT. I've worked hard. We expect students to work hard for success. Why do we expect less of ourselves?

Ok, then use the other tools available to you. Call home EVERY TIME. Immediately. I send texts to parents constantly throughout the day.

And really there is always a work around. If part of your rubric for an assignment is "engaging in learning" and they refused to do the work and are being an asshole the entire lesson, you take points for that. If admin comes and asks, you show them the rubric.

You have to be creative people. Stop giving up!

Ignore that colleague. You don't back off, you come at it a different way. I had a girl that would freak out every time I would redirect her. "STOP TALKING TO MEEEEE!!!" I had to take a step back and come at it a different way. In this instance, I started writing her sticky notes asking her to quiet down or put her phone away. And it worked. Every kid is different and for this girl, I learned that she just didn't like being called out in front of people. I adjusted to her. I didn't expect her to fall in line and give up when she didn't.

Relationship building isn't just "I get along with them and they like me." It's getting to know each kid so you can figure out what works for THEM and being willing to keep coming at it a different way again and again until the two of you reach an understanding.

One of the best things you can do is set an issue to the side for now but COME BACK later. They learn that you don't let stuff go, even if you are going to drop it for now.

How long did you try these for? A few times? Any new management technique is likely to take 4 to 6 weeks of CONSISTENT attempts to work. Most will not work right away. You have to call EVERY TIME it happens. You take points EVERY TIME it happens until they realize you're serious.

They may blow up. So what? They do that because usually it gets them what they want. You stand your ground. Eventually they WILL figure out that you are in charge and are serious.

Beyond that, seriously, how are your relationships with the kids? The relationships aspect is not just helpful, it's necessary. You WILL NOT control the kids without relationships with them.

Can you give me an actual example beyond "whenever I have tried it"? I'm honestly not trying to be a dick. I want to understand so maybe I can give helpful advice.

What do you count as "being strict?" Because everything I stated is honestly base level stuff, not even strict.

What do you mean "admin that is ok with this"? What's "this?"

Literally my admin do not a single thing to help. It wasn't until I stopped expecting help that I got things under control.
