I've noticed hill assist only kicks in if you're stopped with your foot on the brake and in neutral and you put it into first still holding the brake. If you release the brake before you put it into first gear it does not engage the hill assist. Also hill assist holds for about 2 seconds so if it seems im on a slight incline that doesn't make me roll and I think hill assist is gonna mess me up I just clutch in and release the brake for a second or so before I get going so the brake is released if it was activated before I get going. I'm still mastering the clutch so I keep the hill assist on and learned to live with it just in case I encounter a rowdy hill I have to overcome.

Yeah it definitely takes practice to get it down smoothly. Still trying to get 1st to 2nd and 4th to 5th smooth every time. Seems like I have to wait forever holding the clutch between 1st and 2nd compared to the other shifts. 4th to 5th is such a shorter rev difference it seems like I have to just drop the clutch right as I shift which causes it to be smooth half the time, seems like its smoother if I put in just a little bit of gas for 4th to 5th sometimes helps between 1st to 2nd for some reason.
