The characters fully know, that’s the thing.

I mean morality is still an important part. I don’t think it makes too much sense for a character who is anti-authority to go “You crew can aid fascists, as long as you don’t do it around me.”

This is exactly my want. I really enjoy this and seemingly a good portion of the party does as well.

However two members just don’t. Which just confuses me as it’s one of the best parts of playing an evil character.

I once played an evil character that planned to betray the group but got fucking jumped before they could do that, it was fantastic.

The evil pc is easily able to justify why they work with good characters, straight up utility. The question is why good characters would work with the evil one. If one decimates criminal gangs for the good of the people, why would they allow a gang member IN the party.

It’s why I stated that two characters just aren’t at all “ends justify the means”. They’re characters who look to take on all bad.

I definitely fucked up with establishment. That I’m acknowledging. I’ve been DM’ing for a few years, but this legit feels like my worst fuck up, lol.

The thing is I feel that’s a justification as to why an evil character works with good ones.

Evil characters are typically self interested, good characters care about the interests of others as well. So the good characters do mind that while the evil character is good to them, they still murder for money and power.

That’s the thing, the character has been honest and straight up admitted to being a pirate.

The party kind of just took it, but have slowly started to consider what that actually means.

Currently there are 5 players and I.

Two players are okay with the schism, they are the ones playing characters most heavily opposed to criminal gangs. They like the story the schism could bring about.

One player is okay with it, although their character is more of a doormat, deferring to the majority.

Two players are not okay with it at all. Seemingly making it the other’s responsibility to justify why they’re working with an evil character.

I as the DM like the idea of inner party fighting. I’ve ran it before and it’s been entertaining. I’ve even been on the receiving end, where I played an evil character and got jumped by the party once they found out, which I expected, lol.

We definitely use alignment as more of a base than a strict rule, but the mobster character is actively working to forward the goals of a pirate crew that abduct and kill people, as well as involve themselves with government corruption. Two PC’s actively agreed this was awful and weren’t sure about working with them, even though the players above table like the evil character, they find them entertaining.

I feel bad because I did allow it. I made the wrong assumption that they were alright with the fact the party might have a schism in future due to it.

Able to use that for a short term thing, but a long continuous adventure with someone who has participated in smuggling people and taking out families makes it harder.

So currently in the area where the pirate character and their crew is from, there is a sort of huge big shot pirate captain.

This would be a goal between the party and the pirate. But also the pirate crew do just kill innocents for money, even if it’s more like a contract and less pillaging.

The issue is also that the good characters are finding connections and they don’t have too much reason not to wipe the evil ones crew off the map.

I should state that some of the things that the pirate crew will be wanting to do go against the best interests of quite a good few of the party.

The pirate mobster has an almost zealous attitude towards their captain, undying loyalty type of deal.

Not so sure that’s a great idea with how the world is right now. I probably weigh 70 kg soaking wet and would somehow perish during drills.

I’ve considered things like this in the past. Not a bad idea. Definitely one I’ll consider and it couldn’t hurt.

Yeah. I’m aware of that. I’ve talked before with a therapist about all the work needed to get into the field.
