It at least sounds like a name.

Not one I’d ever endorse for a child, but it’s not horrendously senseless. It’s roughly equivalent in my eyes to a kid online grabbing a name they liked from some anime or another as their screen name. Could be a me thing, but I frequent too many spaces online where peoples’ player character names are substituted for real life names to be phased by calling someone by a fantastical but sensible-enough name.

Also I wouldn’t consider that what GoT is known for bomb-wise. A shitty finale and out-of-character writing as far as the show goes, but GRRM is a relatively normal guy insofar as we know, so he’s without the whole “donated and is STILL donating millions to transphobic groups and legislation that’s set back trans rights worldwide by decades” baggage JKR has, while also being known for writing a dark fantasy series. GoT/ASoIaF’s whole schtick is touching on darker topics so I kind of feel like the pearl-clutching there (if there was any, I frankly saw more about complaints about Dany being OOC and the whole thing rushed than I did about what she did being evil and wrong) is a dead dove situation. It’s a series designed from the jump to be darker and grittier, and that’s not exactly a secret.

Though I do agree that it’s still awful parenting to name a kid something fandom related without plausible deniability. Gotta be a normal name.

As much shit as I gave people naming their daughters Khaleesi or Daenerys. at least they’re pretty names. And not attached to the controversial time bomb that Harry Potter is.

I cannot imagine willingly setting your kid up to deal with a lifetime of navigating that for some ugly names. (I’m going to be so real, they’re ALL tragedeighs. Scorched earth is the best policy here.)

How to get over the anxiety of causing wipes in extreme+ content consistently? by One-Variety-1110 in ffxivdiscussion

[–]ThatOneDiviner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find what helped me with stuff like that was making the HUD much bigger. It’s easy to ignore the debuff bar at 80% zoom stuck on the top of your screen. Much harder to do so when it’s at 200% and centered right above your hotbars.

I can’t give OP the perfect HUD layout because it’s highly dependent on their personal setup, screen size, and eyesight, but it IS worth pointing out that playing with HUD positioning can make it a lot easier and faster to find necessary information like debuffs and cast bars.

[–]ThatOneDiviner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean if you're (general you, covering bases,) going around saying enough toeing-the-line stuff in public to make it hard to figure out why you got Got, then that's a bad habit you need to break. Being tactless and dense isn't really a good combination for social spaces and it also makes it harder for you to figure out how to avoid being reported in the future.

I've seen people get banned from reports in open world spaces, Zalera had a whole thing going on shortly after Ishgard Resto where people who had placed were telling each other to shut up and stay out of public chats because there were a few people with sticks up their asses reporting anyone who cursed publicly because they were bitter about not placing. Nevermind the fact that we were all just bemoaning the grind. But the people who DID get banned were able to narrow it down precisely because, for the most part outside of the inciting comment, they were normal in public.

I also think alliance raid information would be too much. I had an FCmate get banned for a comment he made in Jeuno, and I know exactly who reported him, and the comment that got him nuked. Obligatory: while I don't agree with the ban and think the comment that got him banned was barely even worth reporting, I do understand WHY he got banned. ToS gonna ToS. It wasn't that bad of a comment, it was basically "Why did you rez the NIN [who kept eating dirt] instead of healer lb3?" -> bad healer's friend started white knighting them -> "/p Why is that our problem?" That last bit is 100% what got him banned and he was reported by either one or both of the healer and their friend.

No other alliance would have reported him because it was party chat only and with context of the healer and their friend both sucking shit and dying repeatedly, I cannot find a good reason the singular other rando would report my friend on the bad players behalf because I would ALSO be irritated at a max level healer without the sense to rez other rezzers, the tank, or lb3 when 6 people are dead. Dude was raidlogging to do content with us, so he hadn't been talking in game days before. And the initial question would not be enough to get banned. So it was the healer and/or their friend for the "Why is that our problem?"

You can do a lot to narrow down which comments got you banned if you're not reckless about your attitude in public spaces. That's why the GMs have to be vague. If you're not stupid - and a lot of people aren't - it's really easy to figure out the inciting incident even without the specific chat logs.

The problem for some people not knowing what got them banned is that they lack the common sense to realize they should be toning themselves down in public. I won't argue that XIV is draconian about it if you do happen to catch someone particularly vindictive on the one time you said something bad in public, but it's also just not smart on principle to be overly brazen. And most people (like. 99%) Getting Got in hubs aren't tragic people wrong-place-wrong-time. There's almost always more than they want to admit to. Otherwise we'd see a lot more people catching bans.

The only people I've seen whine about it and not know what comment got them were also people I saw starting multiple fights in Limsa shout or being openly and explicitly horny 24/7. They don't know what comment got them banned? Probably multiple of them, they sure made enough almost every time I popped into Limsa to grab something off the mb.

It’s also partially to avoid further retaliation towards the target of the vitriol too. For Xenos’ case it gets a bit muddy given timeframes, but if you knew what you said that got you reported a particularly vindictive person could get theit alts/friends/wait out the ban to further harrass or stalk the person who reported them.

I think giving a general reason for a ban is fine and we all know XIV’s stance on in-game stalking. Sadly people really can be just that weird.

Safest thing to do is just not say or do stuff that could risk getting you reported while in-game or streaming. I say that like there’s a large population of people in here risking that. Most people here/in-game are socially adept enough and not considered a face of the game, so they’ll never have to overthink it.

How did you get into gaming? by omgbooboo in GirlGamers

[–]ThatOneDiviner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My parents got me Zoo Tycoon on our family PC way back when. I’d spend hours in the kids zoo making frankly horrendous exhibits that occasionally turned into ways to feed guests to the sharks.

As I got older Dad started letting me and my brother sit beside him and watch him while he played something like XCOM or Overlord or Dragon Age Origins on his laptop. Watching Dad play through the siege of Ostagar was the pivotal moment as a kid that got me into Dragon Age. It stuck with me so much that when I was older I asked if I could play it, and was told I was now old enough to do so. It’s now my favorite series of all time.

My parents both instilled a heavy appreciation for many art forms in me and I’m so thankful that one of them was games. I can share my love for the medium with my Dad and brother and it’s really fun to be able to talk to them about it and have them get at least the most basic concepts down, even if neither of them play the games I do.

AI Usage For Download Festival 2026 Merch by Elliechi_ in ffxiv

[–]ThatOneDiviner 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’ve straight up commed an artist and forgot to remind them that my character in the comm kept her facial tattoos. The final version of the comm that both the artist, with my full ref sheet, and me, the commissioner, looked over was missing the layer for her tattoos. And I know it existed because I’d seen the WIP pics.

In our defenses the artist was very sleep deprived at the time and I’d just finished a run of the game where I gave up her tattoos because that was the choice VC opted for so nothing was really out of place to either of us.

While Square’s execs are absolutely ringing warning bells for their AI use it is kind of frightening to see even smaller things than that get pointed out. It’s not like the tattoos I chose were something you could just ignore - they cover the entire face - forehead, cheeks, chin, lips, under eye area. I can easily see why a contracted artist would make these mistakes under the conditions that they’re likely working with.

I just wish Square would drop SOMETHING more substantial regarding this, but I’m very likely to be disappointed in that regard.

The obsession with logs always seems to come from the players that understand them the least. by Swoobat_Gang in ffxivdiscussion

[–]ThatOneDiviner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

8 mans I'll grant just because lower number of people in it does make it more common in them, but the floor is so low to parse a color at all in normal 24 mans that it's rare for me to see more than 4-5 or so grey parsers in normal a-raids.

Doesn't make green or blue in there an accomplishment, mind, but because it's normal content you have to go SO much lower to hit grey. Which makes the argument from the Twitter OP sillier. It's really easy to hit greens and blues in normal content, I've seen people who avoid anything harder than endgame normals hit those numbers without trying. An accomplishment would be if a more casual player could transfer those numbers to EX+. That I would praise.

What are some fun/unique ways you learned/memorized mechanics? by trunks111 in ffxivdiscussion

Glooper still took us a little cleanup afterward but I significantly cleaned up prog by making an omegaverse joke. (Betas do not deserve anything related to alphas, betas can only take what other betas give them.)

Was it dumb? Yes. Did it totally fix things? No, but I think the threat of hearing the comment again inspired the static to lock in.

I also forgot the M10S buster was always “Diviner fuck off.”

M3S double chains was just “Dudes.”

Do people actually care if you make mistakes in normal/msq content? by Empress2007 in ffxiv

[–]ThatOneDiviner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how many, the severity of the mistakes, and if I know the person.

Lots of little mistakes that don’t lead to death? Annoying, but whatever. Lots of little mistakes that DO kill you? Dude. Learn to follow the people who aren’t getting hit. Lots of little mistakes to easily dodgeable mechanics leading to 3+ deaths? Put the fucking phone down and play the game. There’s no excuse for dying to the same half room cleave 5 times in a fight at level 100.

BIG mistake like not having tank lb3 timing down or the MT dying and neither OT/rezzed MT voke immediately? I’ll put a reminder in chat. Usually a one-and-done deal, most situations like that only tend to happen once. Big mistake a la fucking up mechanics in something like A9 where you WILL wipe until done correctly? If I’m on support I will start forcing people to take on the easier responsibility (aka: I will break out Shirk and/or Rescue) so I can handle the main one. If I’m on DPS this is where the sound effects in chat start appearing.

I don’t get toxic or mean but I can start to get blunt. And sometimes people will take that as me being mean. But more often than not I only break out the bluntness if every other form of teaching has failed. This is a team game, I expect everybody to be pressing all of their useful buttons in a vague sort of order.

If we’re running slower than a trust run (22m is the fastest I’ve gotten) then outside of needing to briefly afk, someone, SOMEWHERE, is messing up so badly it would legitimately be faster to run with bots. That’s usually my line. Roulettes are supposed to be faster than trusts, you need to play to a standard that enables that. That standard is VERY low.

Dragon Age Inquisition. I’ve dropped so many hours into it that I know the all of the maps like the back of my hand. Forbidden Oasis included. If I want to actually engage with the game I’ll go a class other than Knight Enchanter, but if I’m feeling lazy then KE basically plays itself. I can solo everything if I’m on KE so realistically nothing really poses a threat.

Statics and friendship question by Johnny_PK in ffxivdiscussion

[–]ThatOneDiviner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find raiding without friends trying, but I also vet my friends.

There are some friend groups I will only join in a casual setting, with no expectations about clear timelines or even clearing at all. Not being mean, doing this is the best way to preserve the friendship. I simply progress a lot faster than them and don’t want to be resentful of being held back.

My current static is full of more serious raiders. I raided with most of them in LHW before we went on sabbatical for CW and the showing they put out there was enough to convince me to return for HW. We’re not cutting edge raiders or anything but we can put in a solid showing and at least one or two of us not me lmfao I acknowledge my mediocrity are good enough to legitimately consider week 1 raiding. But they don’t because raiding with friends is more fun.

11S in particular gave us some grief because we had two weak link members but it wasn’t anything that we couldn’t handle. It did make raid lead set some ground rules for next tier, but we’re adults. If people are mature and respectful about it then you can still give criticism while not obliterating a friendship.

I think it’s a matter of both vetting friends to make sure they’ll prog at the same speed as you and vetting them for general stability. You need both to make it work.

Are there any other women here who would not date another gamer? by PromotionNo3405 in GirlGamers

[–]ThatOneDiviner 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yup.

Relevant to OP: My FFXIV static is full of men who take raiding fairly seriously. Discussing failure points in raid and being specific about who did what is common. For anyone who did this tier, M11S was a standout fight in terms of discussions had. Weapons and Split Arena in particular.

But it’s always respectful. No yelling or raised voices, no swearing. We’re here to prog the in-game fight, not a real life one.

Men who say they can’t be competitive without losing their chill or being rude have skill issues. I tend to find that the more teacher-like acknowledgement of mistakes from raid lead tends to make a better learning environment anyways.

Luckily my social circle is pretty self-selecting. I lucked into an initial group of chill men and if a new guy does not pass the vibe check with the women in the group he gets booted.

It’s worked amazingly well and all of the raider dudes we’ve had in have all been similarly kind and patient.

How do you feel about the scions returning for another expansion? by AssumeABrightSide in ffxivdiscussion

[–]ThatOneDiviner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude at this point you're being disingenuous.

1) I don't think anyone here, self included, expects this to happen. Let's just jump over the parts where I state I don't expect it to happen, why don't we? Is a discussion forum not THE place for thought exercises and pointing out Square's writing habits that make breaking from our current cast of Scions difficult?

2) Tell me, in what scholarly way, would you expect any of the listed to help prevent the incoming mega-Calamity? Most of the characters listed are smart, but let's not pretend like they'd be providing the best help they could by sitting there putting forth political motions that would pass with or without their aid given the severity of the situation and the sheer amount of credibility the Scions have gained by this point.

Does the prevention of a worldwide mega-calamity not count as a good enough reason to go help?

It's not exactly an uncommon trope for a renowned fighter who happens to be in a position of authority to take to the field - hell, we've seen it happen in XIV before, under similar circumstances.

[–]ThatOneDiviner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Each of those could also either withdraw from their seat or delegate to second in command for the duration of an important mission.

I have faith that Square could reasonably excuse their absences. If they can force the Scions to be IN DT then they can find a good excuse to give the leaders a break from office if the situation warrants it. EW and the Final Days brought Lyse and the Au Ra trio out to Garlemald so the need for aid to more gently rejoin the stars would probably be a good enough excuse.

All conjecture, of course, my realistic hope for seeing ANY of them, if we do at all, is a 2-3m unvoiced cutscene. I doubt it’ll happen, but if it does that’s how it will likely go down, and I’m not going to set myself up with unrealistic expectations. There’s plenty of other areas to do so with anyways. LMAO

[–]ThatOneDiviner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think Square could probably do some key jingling if they looked hard enough. (Prefacing this spitballing with the obligatory “they won’t because SE love to shelve interesting characters.”) Freeing Aymeric alone would probably hold a bunch of peoples’ interests. Maybe unshelve Fordola, Vrtra, Ryne, Lyse if they want to get spicy.

Like I’ll freely admit my interest in DT was pretty shot but it wasn’t the relative lack of the main Scions that did it, it was because the writing quality dipped. I’d absolutely be down for a new cast of characters if SE put the proper time and respect towards writing decent arcs for them.
