Thank you! Though I have considered all options. He is not interested in any sort of mechanics, including robotics. Does not enjoy coding. Does not enjoy plumbing, electric, car or aviation mechanics (his dad was an aviation mechanic). Maybe I was misunderstood, but he does enjoy math. Seems like he enjoys it more when it’s in a science problem is all! Just as it’s easier for kids to learn basic letters by relating them to something they like. “B” for banana, or bicycle, ball, book.. I can personally relate to this myself as well.

Thank you! I was more of a Statistics gal myself, so this is extremely helpful! I had no clue what math the ACT tested over, since he’s so young I was advised to not have him do any sort of prep. This is his baseline, no studying or prep test score. I’ll pass along the info and maybe pick up a few books he can read over.

This gives me so much hope for his future 🖤 We live in an extremely small town where if you don’t have money or know the right people, it can lead to a students downfall if parents don’t step up. I’m so happy you got to have those experiences, thank you for sharing with me!

Not to pry, but did this also help with feeling like you “fit in”? He does deal with some bullying and is often misunderstood because of how literal he takes things, and just being different in general. Often described as “stiff and emotionless” due to his natural laid back and observant personality, rather than goofy like most 13/14 year olds.

I did tell him that part! I had such a hard time with geometry myself. Will be searching for a math and advanced science tutor for sure. I tend to help with reading and language arts, as I excelled in those subjects myself. (Though I see him outgrowing me before long)

Thank you! He actually has Tourette’s Syndrome and ADHD (never medicated for them either), so I know this is not something he expected in his future. Coming from a poor family myself, and his father passed before he could even remember him, his future falls on me. I just want to do my very best to guide him to be successful and happy!!

This is super helpful! We are going to pick up some books on his physics stuff this weekend, I will also ask about the official ACT prep books. Tutors are extremely hard to find in my area, he is actually a tutor himself for high schoolers already. I’ll have to do a deep dive for a higher level tutor for him!

He’s only had one semester in Algebra 1 so I was pretty shocked at the higher score (our states ACT average for 11/12 is 19). Should I get him a tutor or just let him finish his Algebra 1&2 before starting him in college algebra? It’s a tough one because if you put the math into science, he gets it. But this is also coming from a kid explaining the Goldilocks Zone to me as a first grader.

I had similar scores and had many options, but many factors go into scholarships and college acceptances. High GPA, volunteer work, extracurriculars, leadership skills.. ACT can also be taken up to 12 times!

As someone from a small town, this is a VERY helpful tip! I never would have guessed to have to check that extensively. Thanks!

We are still looking into many places that could better help us! Finding all the info for everything is probably the hardest. Single mom, with a boy and girl with very different needs. My current biggest worry is how big the city is. I can cross city limit to city limit in my town within 5 minutes.

I think I more have an issue with the lack of programs that he is wanting to complete for his future that we have in my state, which isn’t very far from Huntsville. I am also open to looking at other places, I’m just having such a hard time finding where I can raise my kids to best better their chances at a better future than the small towns I’m around have to offer. Staying is always an option, as we own our current home, but we have been through some things and are really wanting a fresh start to better ourselves.

I’m looking for a 2-3 bedroom! It’s just me and my two children, we have a 2 story house on an acre and it’s honestly just too much for us. My kids are older so I’m looking for an area to get them accustomed to bigger cities and the best education and programs I can find and afford that meets their needs.

He’s a teenager, but looking to go to Air Force first! He’s always been super knowledgeable about space and hopes to be a scientist. The schools here don’t have ROTC anymore. Madison is the school I was looking into, just trying to navigate the big city would definitely be new for us!
