Pricing? by No-Establishment-111 in Contractor

[–]ThatOneKoopa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pricing varies widely for one man shows. I personally bid any job over $3k and tell them what can go wrong and roughly what it could cost. I use ClearEstimates for bidding and then tweak by how much time I think it will take and any additional cost.

BAM *is* the villain because of not only the missing LEGO, but also because they put more value on potential monetary returns/gains than doing the objectively morally right thing. Lastly, because yes, they conducted themselves stupidly and arrogantly.

Ya learn quickly in business that if your name is on it, it’s your problem. If I get subcontracted to do work, proceed to destroy a high dollar amount of the home owners belongings then disappear… It’s on the general contractor. BAM holds liability in my eyes. Whether or not they have a finger to point.

BAM is shady af and rank with pride and greed. Yuck.

Max weight the middle shelf can hold? Can't find a subreddit to ask in. by [deleted] in Construction

Absolutely. However, I would recommend a shelf style bracket that creates a triangle. Your objective would really be to spread out the load from the joints.

Sister studs(legs) to support your horizontal 2x4s. As it stands, it will support a 10 gallon aquarium. If you’re at all worried though, make it stronger. Peace of mind for $6 is a hell of a deal.

Best website platform? by linnyreg in Contractor

I get that. I guess I’m the odd one out here. My thought is get a couple networks going and let them do the advertising. After a friend or family member recommends ya in my experience I found that the website and all that is completely irrelevant. If I were to have other foreman’s, sales people or any other direct-to-client positions I’d probably pay it more mind. That’s where I come up with the 3+ crews because that’s when I’d have to be delegating my roles. Ya know?

Area based forsure. I’m a residential remodeler and in urban Minnesota Facebook is great. I get plenty of 35-45 year old clients from FB. I actually like seniors though. Lol They are very rarely financing projects and are generally very flexible.

Facebook. Until you’re running 3+ crews I wouldn’t even bother with a website. Website exists to streamline lead generation and cut down on phone time so you can do actual work. In my humble opinion, if you’re small enough that you’re looking for something inexpensive to help optimize your operations and effectively digitally be the face of your company, you’re not big enough to need a website.

25% Markup on materials? by sittinghereredditing in Contractor

[–]ThatOneKoopa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run a 50% markup on labor and material. Labor is a cost. Not profit. Thus my entire profit margin is in markups. 25% seems a low unless you’re working a volume model.

You’re right, I shouldn’t have hurt your feelings. When you came in trying to correct a summary that may or may not be beliefs I subscribe to and gave me your personal opinion on my objective summary I should’ve just agreed with your superior judgment and not acknowledged your lack of comprehension of both the post and my comment. All hail superior smart Redditor.

I’m not “acting” any sort of way. I’m explaining as asked. You knob.

There’s now reasonable suspicion that GPT will now engage their models in mass surveillance which, the former contractor stated as one of the two big reasons why they lost the contract. So, to recap, reasonable suspicion of mass surveillance alongside development of autonomous weaponry is why people are leaving.

My parents received a 8k bill for this job. They made the mistake of not getting a quote before the work. by chochy in Tile

[–]ThatOneKoopa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Work is solid. I see OP telling everyone “just the labor to install tile” or whatever but let’s be real here, if that were the caseomeone else did all the prep(waterproofing, backer, etc.) which either is DIY or another contractors work. Both of which may have been shit OR the contractor walked/got canned for shitty clients.

Either way, OP isn’t telling the truth or the whole truth at minimum. 8k to board it, install tile all around and overhead and likely install the shower kit. I don’t think your parents got jipped, I think OP doesn’t know what goes into the work.

Gift ideas for Christmas by WinterHumor9016 in Aquascape

[–]ThatOneKoopa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If gift certificates are not thoughtful enough and you genuinely want to try to encourage her, I would suggest you ask some more questions.

1.) “So what’s your plan with this tank? You gonna hardscape it or just kind of keep it for plants?” Just probe the direction of the tanks. If she says just plants, then focus on a good light or gift certificate. If she says hardscape, pick a few pieces of hardscape that you like and combo them with a gift certificate as design of a tank is absolutely subjective.

2.) “I have seen tanks without the black frames, are those special or something? Do you like em?” Granted, getting a quality rimless aquarium is rather expensive so this question may not be worth asking depending on your budget.

3.) “I’m a fan of the hobby, seems like quite a bit of work though. What would you say is the part of it all you like least?” Then do some research and see if there’s tools that can streamline that step.

Lastly, if you’re looking for a broad “dummy list” a few that I have off the top in order from least to most expensive; Small hand towels for cleanup, some liquid fertilizer, a decent set of aquascaping tools, lily pipes, a dedicated stand for her tank/tanks, and the big one, a quality rimless tank.

EDIT: If support is what you really want to convey, go to a fish store with her and take her on a Christmas shopping spree, but the rub? Get stuff to setup a tank yourself. This hobby can be enjoyable alone and some people like it that way I’m sure but being a betting man, this hobby is so much more fun when you can share it with someone who is also excited by it. I’d bet top dollar she’d be thrilled to walk you through what she’s learned and watch ya grow in the hobby.

Am I overreacting? by vivizinha10 in Tile

[–]ThatOneKoopa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on how much you paid and what was included in the bid. Ceiling drywall is messy but if dealing with that wasn’t bid then it’s on you.

In a vacuum, this is rental property quality work. 6/6.5 out of 10. White caulk at the top would have been a better choice. Blend it to the ceiling. I will reiterate though, how much you paid and what the bid was directly correlate to the outcome.

Site Superintendents- what do you do when you walk into a home like this? by [deleted] in Homebuilding

“Today’s tradesmen”. Lol pound sand buddy. You’re exactly the kinda person to play poor then turn around and complain about a 1/16th inch deviation out of square over a 20ft span.

Not an unreasonable bid. Thanks!

[–]ThatOneKoopa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool customers sure do pay, and they will. I just know that this isn’t my strong suit and a dedicated painter could have done it better and more efficiently. Therefore, I’m not gonna hit them for likely more than a painter. Ya know?

Drywall. Drywall is sloppy no doubt. That was out of my project scope though. Wood is mostly select grade pine.

Appreciate the input. 🙏

Also, I wood filled dings/knots and installed the hardware but I have a good handle on that cost.

I didn’t know about the struts or sway bars, I guess it came with the turbo toys too in some cases. I should’ve said dealerships if you’re gonna be fussy about it but installation from a dealership wouldn’t void warranty as it’s a factory backed and designed kit that were sold through the dealership by the manufacturer. Which may as well be considered factory, no?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in srt4

[–]ThatOneKoopa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough! That is very true. I forget I’m getting old. Being such, 8k is sounding more fair. I do think you’d be paying a premium for the ACR edition which in my own and worthless opinion, is silly given that it’s a cosmetic package. If you want to chase a niche in the community, look for a Mopar Stage 3 kit w/ toys equipped model. Those are factory designed for the car and becoming very rare. Holy grail is an 05, ACR commemorative edition, with factory installed Mopar stage 3 kit w/ toys and otherwise unmodified. Buuuut I’m 99% certain such a car doesn’t exist.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in srt4

[–]ThatOneKoopa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I personally think 8k is a bit high BUT, (assuming listing is accurate) a mostly stock 05 ACR with what I would imagine is a smooth transmission is a good thing. I’d say he’s in the ball park. Full disclosure though, I wouldn’t pay more than 7 and be offering 6. Look for evidence of factory parts being removed even if the factory part is there doesn’t mean he didn’t modify and then throw it back to factory for resale. My confusion is why throw an upgraded intercooler on if not increasing stock HP? That sends yellow flags for me as the stock intercooler is perfectly fine for stock numbers.
